Mike stared at Lila's wings in amazement. "Oh, gods... Wow." He looked into her face. "I heard you tell Dad that you were an experiment. Is this what you meant?" He asked curiously. Mike thought the wings were pretty cool but he also thought it must have been painful to get them.

Mike watched the exchange without comment. He didn't mind spending the afternoon with his new partner but the hatred he could see in her eyes made him pause that thought. If she was going to be cold and annoyed for the whole time, well Mike would deal with it but he wasn't going to enjoy it so much. "You know, since we're partners now, you might as well accept that you have to deal with me. I'm sorry if I've managed to offend you enough already just by being here, but it's not like we have much of a choice." He spoke aloud without meaning to and regretted it at first, but then he decided it didn't matter. It was true enough in his opinion and he liked to be direct. He stared right at Maxine as he spoke, his blue eyes clear and showing no hint of emotion. He expected a glare and annoyed reaction but wouldn't be overly shocked if he got a different one.

"Wow." Mike repeated. "So... You grew up never knowing your parents? Do you know if you were given away willingly or stolen?" He wondered as he tried to imagine being brought up by some random scientists.

Mike shrugged, glad she hadn't taken his words too badly then frowned slightly as he tried to think of somewhere to go. His stomach distracted him though so he decided to ask "Well, are you hungry? We can go to change then meet up again at a restaurant or fast food joint of your choice." He suggested. If she didn't want to then he'd just grab something to eat at home. "If you don't like that then... I dunno, do you have any suggestions?" He wanted to make sure that he didn't make the decision alone, he liked it when everyone put in ideas.

"Oh gods, that's awful!" Mike exclaimed in shock. "I thought human experimentation was outlawed after World War II, so I bet the government doesn't know about this." He paused. "So that's why you were nervous when Dad first met you. You must have escaped them and run, right?"

"Well you can't go back there." Mike decided, looking at his sister. "Maybe you could stay with us for a while, if you want to and Dad agrees. This is a small town, not many people come by here, so you should be safer than in a large city."

"Cool, so should we tell him about the scientists as well, or just ask for you to say and skip over that part?" Mike wondered. He didn't like witholding info from Jack but if the scientists came and talked to him about it he could honestly say he doesn't know what they're talking about.

"Hey Dad!" Mike yelled down to him. "Can you come up here for a moment?"

"Yeah, sure." Jack called back and made his way upstairs. "What's up?"

Jack stopped just outside the door. "You called?" He looked towards Mike.

"Yeah, Dad could Lila stay with us for a while? She doesn't have a home or family." Mike asked hopefully.

Jack hesitated, thinking. "Well... OK, it's fine by me. I'll go set up the guest bedroom and tomorrow we can go to the mall and Lila can choose some more clothes and stuff."

"A mall is a huge building with lots of shops in it. You can get clothes, food, pets, games, books, a whole lot of stuff. It's like several shops combined." Jack explained.

Jack went to go make the guest bedroom for Lila to stay in. "Mike, would you come help me out? the faster we finish the faster we can get back to the baseball game."

Mike grinned. "Coming!" He went with his Dad and grabbed blankets for the bed while Jack grabbed sheets.

Mike heard the knock and dumped the blankets on the bed. "One minuet Dad, I think Jamie's here." He hurried down the stairs, jumping the last few steps and then opening the door. "Hey!" He said. "Come on in. Sorry if it took a while for me to get to the door."

"This is Lila, she's going to be staying with my family." Mike explained. "Lila, this is my friend Jamie." He decided that was a good enough introduction.

"Just ignore her." Mike rolled his eyes at his sister as he spoke to Jamie. "Hey, do you wanna see what movies are playing at the theater?"

"Nope, that sounds great." Mike grinned and headed for his own car. "I'll meet you there in about an hour then." He called back over his shoulder as he opened the door and got in. He pulled the door shut behind himself and locked in his seat belt before placing the keys in the ignition and turning on the car.

"Well, the offer was open to everybody." Mike shrugged. "I was hoping Lila would want to go, I don't think she's seen a movie before."

Mike drove home and parked his car in the garage. He opened the door to his house and his dog came over to greet him. "Aw, hey Rover." He grinned and took off his shoes before kneeling down to pet her. "How are you doing dog?" When he stood back up Rover went back to the other room to resume chewing on the bone Mike had given her before he left for work that morning.
Mike made his way upstairs and changed into a plain black tee-shirt and tan cargo shorts. It didn't take long and he still had some time left before he had to leave for the pizza place so he went back downstairs and turned on the t.v. Rover came back over to him and laid down next to his feet as he watched the news. Mike bent over slightly and reached down to pet her.

Mike chose to ignore his sister and turned his attention to Lila. "Hey Lila, have you ever seen a movie before?"
