Ellie didn't even have to look at him long to know that he was concerned about her- for that, she was sorry, for the multitude of reasons, but also because she had sworn to herself not to do that. Toni deserved better than to worry about her over something like this. Though this was possibly more than anyone was meant to handle. Mental exhaustion, phsyical torture, being drugged, blackmailed- it sounded like something out of a terrible War movie or something other. But by god, that voice of his. Even though she could gladly hiss at the sight of fatigues and his strapping boots, what she might once have teased for him looking rather handsome in, was now her enemy. But he was strong. He fit the spitting image of a solider. His voice was much the same. Steady. Calm.

Even though she had to lie. She wasn't okay. She really, really, really, wasn't okay. She put a smile on her face, warm, and soft, though it only faintly touched her eyes. "Mhm," she would chime softly, before daring to stretch her arms out to him to beckon him closer, to hold her, glad now for the long, rough knit of her sweater to cover the faint rope burns on her wrists. As much as she wanted to hide it, her desire to hide away was even greater, as if she could just disappear into those hated fatigues of hers, and find the safety that she couldn't right now. His voice hurt her head, sending her migraine pounding as the room still faintly spun, but she wasn't going to let it go, trying to memorize it, the details of his face, the way his voice rose and fell softly with each syllable, even his expression of concern. She had noticed, of course, that he had something behind his back, but she hadn't thought to question it.

She wanted to tell him to run. That they were in danger. That they were all in danger. That this was stupid, and crazy, and that she didn't want to hurt him, didn't want to let him go, didn't want to be the cause for his death because she had been so stupid, so, so, stupid. The words screamed in her mind, battering her already battered mind that even this, this moment should be forbidden. That she should be chasing him away, making him hate her in any way that she could- but she couldn't bring herself to. She loved him. "Just a bad night, nightmares," she answered, as honest as she dare. She wasn't lying completely, after all. It was nightmares that had driven her from her bed- and she had endured a nightmare, a living one, all through the night while they had slept soundly, nonethewiser. It'd be easier, anyway, then pretending she was sick for the next week, even if it gave her an option to sit in bed. She couldn't let herself fall into that sort of pit, not again.

You look... tired. Wasn't that the truth. "I... may have not slept," she answered, a sheepish grin on her face, shoving away her intrusive thoughts as she tried to put a bit of her cheer back into her voice. Trying to act as if two of him weren't still standing there, like a double as the drugs faded. Though, all things considered, this was likely the most honest she had been to him about how bad her nightmares really were, because the reality was even worse than a few little dreams. "What have you got there?" she would question instead, her head tilting curiously in the direction in his hand; she thought it safer to be more vague instead of pointing at the wall behind him on accident. "Managed to sneak away from your work for a while, huh? I'm glad, Glad to see him, but not for what she had to do. God, this would kill her- she was stalling. But who could blame her. Maybe she could tell him, somehow, what was going on- maybe she could save him, save all of them. But she didn't even know how to save herself.

Of course, it wasn't madness that plagued the shine in Ellie's eyes, but a forced subdudeness that she didn't like, that she was warring against, that she couldn't fix. Because, for some reason, she oddly doubted the fact that this would be the only time that she would be drugged or abused in some manner. But, when he reached out to gently brush her hair, she smiled, shoving away that ache in her chest that threatened tears and sorrow over this moment, instead memorizing the feeling of the touch against her scalp, the kiss to the cheek that she gently returned. This was her Toni, at least for this moment. The quiet and caring man that wasn't affected by the stupid rules of the camp, who was more than just fodder, a piece in this stupid plan of theirs. God, why did she have to give him up?! Why! Even she could see the mild agitation her state had brought to him, but while it was partly the drugs, it was partly her wrestling with her own dismissive body to keep from breaking down crying again right then and there. She felt pathetic, really.

And her heart only hurt worse as he moved closer, and his hand revealed the necklace that had been so carefully contained in his hand, the quiet, sheepish compliment that made her smile rise a little higher. But she seemed to remember herself and though she kept the smile, she gingerly lifted it from his palm and brushed her thumb along it curiously. "I love it," she would smile up at him at the gift, giving her quiet thanks. Though she was still faintly dizzy, her vision was starting to clear some. It was... pretty, a really thoughtful gift, but it wasn't anything she could wear in Public, not even as she would unclasp it to put it around her neck while he was there. She'd have to hide it later, somehow- because she'd be damned if she didn't keep this little part of him with her. Blue, huh? She supposed she'd have to keep that in mind, but her features were rather pale as it were, blue was simply an easy match for her complexion.

She listened to him talk on about his work, offering an amused smile, but there was a small jolt in her heart. She hadn't known any of this. Nothing of what he was doing. This was the first time the had talked in how long? Would he still love her after this? After all of this? It's not like being the black sheep at the hotel. Ellie swallowed nervously, offering a tiny "Hm," of a laugh to acknowledge it. "Blue collar work," she said instead, looking him over slowly as if she were actually trying to assess it- but she wasn't. "I could see it. But who knows, maybe you had a calling for baking or something," she added in a lame attempt of a joke. She didn't want to think about the hotel, or what this day meant for the both of them. She didn't want to hear about the camp, or the work that went on inside of it. She wanted to go back. Back to their oaisis, back to the hotel if they had to, but anywhere but here, anywhere at all. Anywhere that she could keep him. Because, while it might have sounded like a complete love-story fantasy, with him being the only thing she had, there was nothing better. If it weren't for him, her discovering the mutants would've been her death. Without him, there was no reason she'd still be sitting here, suffering when she could've simply just made a run for it. Did he not realize how much was being sacrificed? That if she did one thing wrong, there would be an 'accident' arranged for her? But he kept talking on. So, she knew that he didin't.

"Gilman?" she promoted idly, her head still in enough of a haze that the look of confusion on her face was likely realistic enough as she scrounged for the proper name. Out of habit alone she had memorized more first names rather than last name basis, unless it came to people like Pryde, who had been introduced only with their last names. He kept talking, his eyes lighting up, and while the dread sank deeper and deeper into her heart, she forced a smile on her face to appease him. But her panic was only growing, her fear and her anguish. She was going to lose him. Just like this. Because Wendy offered him a position of power, because she made him a lap dog- because this place... this... this horrid place? This was more of a home to him than she had been. But she leaned in to hug him tightly, to hide her face into his shoulder. "I'm proud of you!" she would chime, "Just be careful," she added, because she had to. Even though he wouldn't get it, not to the fullest extent, she had to. She had to warn him, she had to save him, somehow especially if he was going to be Wendy's lap dog. But without getting him killed? Without getting herself killed? She didn't know how to keep him safe other than getting him the hell away from her, which clearly wasn't working either.

You're safe here. Oh, how much she wanted to laugh. The tears threatened again in her eyes but she blinked them away quickly and kissed his cheek instead. How much of a joke was that? None of them were safe here! Not even the kids, Pryde's- well, pride and joy of a new generation! But his words only chilled her. If those things keep us alive I'll do it in a heartbeat. No! She wanted to scream, to shout at him that he was making a mistake, that they were all going to die if they kept this up! She choked a noise down in her throat as she lightly rubbed his back instead, forcing herself to calm down, to look normal, to relax, calling upon all those years of a doctor poker-face that she had practiced and earned so well. "Listen, don't do anything stupid, okay? I like you in one piece," she would say quickly, her voice briefly serious, as much as she tried to put humor back into it to prevent him from thinking anything was wrong. But his words since a feeling of dread trickling down her spine- had he already been so influenced by the camp? So blinded by the promises of grandeour that would never come. "I know you're more suited to military life than me, but it's dangerous here..." she gave a half second pause. "With the Mutes." Would he think anything of it? Maybe not now, maybe not today, but if anything happened that was a little out of the ordinary? Maybe she could prepare him, maybe he'd think back to it. But for that, for him to trust her.. well, he'd still have to like her. Which is the exact opposite of what she was supposed to be presently doing.

She finally let him go, to meet his gaze with a small smile. It rose a little higher at the own on his face, and she ignored the painful knot in her stomach that was her true emotions. If there was one thing Toni could be mad at, she supposed, was how good she could lie- surprising even herself by how quickly she could manipulate her face. Of course, he always had a knack for reading her; she just hoped it would be good enough right now as she reached out to take his face in her hands gently, brushing a thumb gently against his temple. "I love you, Toni." It was likely the most genuine thing she had said that entire conversation, other than her acceptance of the necklace. It'd probably be the last time she would get to say it, too, so she leaned in to kiss him, too, however brief, trying her hardest to make it seem as if she wasn't trying to say goodbye to him. But the nightmares wouldn't stop here for her- oh, no, they were only just beginning.

God, she loved him. She loved him so damn much. She was infatuated with him, the way he looked at her, the way his smiles would soften at the sight of her smiling back at him. The little bit of play and and bantar that they would go back and forth with, like they weren't in the apocalypse, like she didn't have to give him up. It was hard to fight back her tears, and with the tense feeling in her throat she was amazed that she was even still speaking without sounding froggy. She curled her fingers into the back of his shirt, not wanting to let him go, trying to rememer this.

He didn't understand. He didn'y precieve her warning, but why did he hae any reason to think too deeply into her words? In his mind, this was paradise. This was supposed to be heaven for the both of them. She wanted to tell him of the danger, to warn him, but would he believe her? Would it just be that she would put him in danger? Would he believe her if she told him later that all of this had been to protect him? Would he forgive her? Would he still love her like she did him?

Her throat tightened as he pulled himself away from the hug, forcing quickly a smile on her face as the tears threatened. But, she quickly blinked and shunned away the glossy sheen that had settled over her irises as he brushed back her hair. I love you too the words had been softly spoken, almost drowned out for the dizzying sound of her own heartbeat in her ears. It was only faintly, blinded by the kiss and her own struggle of emotions, that she realized that she had done nothing to drive Toni away from her. She had been selfish, clinging on to him and the hope that he was for as long as she could have. But she failed. And even as he rose up, she felt her smile flickering, struggling to keep its appearance. She tried to open her mouth to speak, but by the time she had forced herself to stiffly open her jaw, Toni had disappeared behind the door, and with the soft click of the latch, did Ellie resolve back into her tears.

Ellie didn't want to go to the dance. The camp had been a buzz with Devana's hard work, with the electricity that now buzzed through the camp. What should have been a spark of hope, a glimmer of rejuvination for Ellie, was nothing more than a soft, insistant buzzing of the electrical wires that reminded her of her failures, of her situation with Pryde, a constant buzz of the machines down in those camps doing... unspeakable thingsto the Mutes. She had brushed off most of the attempts from Lucy's children to join them in the square, and though she had her infirmary window open to hear the sounds from in the camp, she tried to ignore them. This was no sweet moment for her.

Yet, it wasn't long after the start of the celebrations that Ellie found herself out there, anyway. Lucy had gotten to her. And though Ellie insisted that she had too much work to do, to which Lucy said she could take a break- didn't have a dress, Lucy would offer one- couldn't dance- didn't matter, she had been all but forced into the hub-bub of everything that she was presently trying to avoid. But it was too late. Lucy had shoved her into a simple, light blue gown, of which Ellie had adorned with Toni's necklace- worst case she could just say it was Lucy's if anyone asked. The girl had been so estatic at Ellie's final, reluctant agreement that she probably wouldn't recall what she had thrown at Ellie in her efforts to get her out.

By the time Pryde had finished her speech, Ellie felt nothing but sick to her stomach. She lingered at the edge of the crowd, wanting nothing more than to disappear back into her infirmary- strange, considering she would have done anything just a week ago to be out here, away from the strictness and the rules and the regulations. She didn't want to see Toni, either. Because she knew she couldn't fail this time. If he was out here, if Pryde saw them together, then it would have to be her giving him up. Pryde wouldn't allow her to keep him, not under her gaze. Because Ellie had only one thing above Pryde's head: Knowledge... but Pryde held everything else above her own.

But it was inevitable. The music didn't even seem to reach her ears. The crowds were suffocating. The cheers and the happiness, and the buzz of the wires made her heart leap in her chest and dizzy her. Stress, fear, sleep deprevation, all of it weighing down on her like a pile of bricks. She didn't even notice that the camp looked... even a touch more homely for once. It didn't matter. None of it did. This was all just a facade for Pryde's bigger plans. A front. To keep them all distracted, in the dark. She hadn't realized, but she had been digging her nails into the palm of her other hand, and quickly straightened out her fingers to smooth the marks that they had left. All that she saw in front of her was Toni, his figure and his hair amongst the crowds. She could faintly see Lucy, too, who had made her way to Naveen's side, looking equally, if not more lovely in a yellow dress of her own. It was Lucy's fault for bringing her out here. The bitter thoughts were short lived. She held no true ill-will to perhaps her only genuine friend in this place, but she hated her, too, for putting her in the situation she had been trying to hide from.

Ellie forced her feet to move, one after the other, taking in a deep breath before she faked another smile, trying to make it reach to the corners of her eyes, though it was a struggle to get it to even pass her lips in the slightest. She wove her way through the crowd slowly, the sickening feeling in her stomach only worsening the closer she got to him. "Hey, Toni," she would muster, cringing at wavering tone of her voice. Damn it she chided herself, only hoping her smile held up its facade. She tried to focus on him, on the necklace around her neck that she had given him, the press of the faint weight of it on her collarbone, anything to steady herself, to put herself back into reality, to allow herself to play this game that could make her lose him forever.

There were times when Ellie wanted to grab Toni by the shoulders and shake him silly, to get it through to his head that they were in terrible danger, even standing right here in what Toni thought was the best place on earth. But, of course, he had the starlight in his eyes. He didn't think anything was wrong. Didn't want to believe that there was anything wrong with this place, so he blinded himself to all the little details that were screaming out to him of danger. Ellie just... would have thought as a former Marine he'd have a little more sense in his head, but they were all tired of fighting. When heaven came knocking at your door with the apparent promise of a camp with electricity, walls, and leadership, it was hard to question it. Still, his comment towards her was so soft and genuine that for a moment she forgot of this brief spout of irritation and smiled. "Thank you," she would answer softly. "You look nice yourself," she would add, her voice perhaps not as playful as it usually was, and avoiding the phrases 'handsome' or any other pet-ish phrases that would have Pryde on her in an instant.

But she was growing more worried by the day, and she knew she wasn't exactly going down the most healthy path. How could she, when presently the only person she actually loved she now had to break up with and distance herself from because Pryde would kill him, and her, otherwise? How could she when there were more mutes near the Camp, like it was planned? Like they were drawing them in? How could she, when she got their toughest soliders in her infirmary, in so much pain, but worrying about whether or not she even had any supplies left with the medicines that the scientists were stealing from her? What about Naveen? He was in on this, did Lucy know? Was he really knowingly putting her in danger? Did he not understand?

The eyes on her back did nothing to help quell her turmoil, her shoulders stiffening at the gazes that landed on her back, prickling at her neck. She couldn't get Pryde out of her head, like a viper curling around her throat, waiting for her to choke. The only thing that kept her resolve was Toni's continued speaking, prompting her about the lights- she knew he wasn't asking about the party. Though Ellie was more outgoing in nature, crowds had never been her favorite thing. "Devana did well," she would answer carefully, before letting him take lead of the conversation again. But it wasn't a conversation she wanted to hear. He was already going back to 'Pryde this' and 'Pryde that', and it only made her feet shift uncomfortably, making her heart sink lower as she watched him talk. "That's great," she would reply dully, but there was no true cheer in her voice. Pryde would certainly decide one thing: who was going to be modified once they were done with Mute trials.

His tone changed though as he offered out his hand, and her gaze flickered down for a moment before looking back up. Getting out of the crowd before she fainted from holding her breath, trying not to blurt out that he was in danger, would be nice. But Pryde, Wendy, they were watching her, she knew it. Even if it was a little bit hurtful that he so pointedly mentioned that they were supposed to be "faking" their relationship, she put a smile on her face as she reached out to take his hand. At least.. at least they'd get out of the crowd so there weren't as many ears when she had to do the very thing that she was dreading: letting him go.

She would let him lead her off, of course, as was the proper gentlemanly manner, but it was unlikely she would be trading partners, sticking close to Toni, and quietly, subtely stepping them towards the edges of the dancing crowds, away from most of the bustle of the party, without being suspicious. She would smile up at him, genuinely, letting him lead her through a few minutes of the dance, but every time she turned, she would see Wendy out of the corner of her eye, lingering around Pryde, sometimes looking her way, and she found her expression slowly dropping before she would quietly stop her feet. "Listen, Toni," she would begin carefully, licking her lips as she tried to figure out how to phrase it. After a moment, she would rise onto her tiptoes, leaning towards his ear, but allowing her hair to cover her lips so that what she said couldn't be figured out. "You're in danger around me. Don't tell anyone, don't say anything, but try to understand I don't want to do this, but I have to. I love you." Her words were whispered, swift, and all at once when she had finished speaking, she lightly kissed his cheek to throw Pryde and Wendy off before slowly settling back to her feet, taking in a shaking breath as she glanced down to his hands, of which she still held, giving them a squeeze as she swallowed. "I can't do this," she would say softly. It conveyed what she really felt, making it sound all the more genuine, but to everyone else, who had not been a part of her quiet message to him, it was what Pryde wanted. With it done, she slowly pulled her hands away from his, before turning quickly on her heels, swiftly turning to weave her way into the crowd so that he could not follow, gritting her teeth to keep her expression together.

But she knew that Toni would still be hurt, still be devastated, confused, likely. But if he had any shred of sense he would keep his mouth shut. Maybe he wouldn't understand what she meant. Maybe she would have hurt him anyway. But she knew that she couldn't be around to see the expression on his face when it all clicked together.

    Hi I'm late!

But yeah, coding has changed a lot since you probably remember it from WCRPG. Not so much, mind you, the basis is pretty much the same, just that a lot of the coding got flip flopped and reworked. If you know div style ( [div style="whatever"] ) then the new coding is very similar. Instead of [fancypost bgcolor=] or whatever it used to be, it's now instead [fancypost='all your coding here w/ apostrophes' ][ /fancypost] And all new codes must have a closing tag (/whatever) otherwise it doesn't work anymore. Uhm. There are also now limitations on how big/small text can be, from like... 8px-36 or something, so not that bad c: Tables, now are a little wonky through this code, so we use float codes to kind of push things around for that sort of thing. I'm not sure how in-to-detail you want me to go on this so let me know if you have any questions and I'll be more than happy to explain more about the coding system!

I'm a Dual-enrolled student right now so I'm juggling three college classes and a high school class, and trying to do my senior project and college applications and it is ROUGHH

But I'm REALLY hoping I get into this college I applied to because they have an awesome history major program. (I wanna be a historian c:)

It had only been a few days since the Moonlight dance incident, yet Ellie had not left the college building she called her dormitory and infirmary. What was the point? Ever since she had forcefully pried herself away from Toni, there had been a sickening feeling in her stomach, an ever-present anxiety that loomed over her shoulder, fearing, angry, avoiding him. Avoiding him because she wanted to be with him. Avoiding him because doing otherwise would get him killed. Avoiding him because she didn't know how to face him after what she had just done. Ruined her life, likely. There was no point in staying in this camp if he wasn't there with her- it was a fact that had lingered dully in her mind. She should just leave. He'd be okay. But he wouldn't be okay, because he was a good solider. And who knew if those expriments of Pryde's would go beyond the Mutes. Who knew. Who knew anything anymore?

It was late afternoon, and Ellie was quietly wiping down the table in her infirmary, a rag scrunched up in a tight grip, scrubbing the same spot that she had for several minutes. Her knucles felt tight, and she could feel the tension running up her arm and locking up her shoulder, guilt still clouding her thoughts, moving only for the sake of moving and not sitting stoic and allowing those thoughts to worsen, to allow herself to cry over the injustice of everything once more. Lucy had already been on her case about what had happened that night after seeing her leave, but she had all but nearly yelled at her- her resolve the only thing in the way from hurting her relationship with perhaps the only genuine person in this camp.

Her thoughts were not at all helped by what she knew what else was ocurring this afternoon: her 'student'. Though it was more likely Ellie should call him a 'replacement'. She knew the moment he was knowledgeable enough in the medical field, the moment that he could replace her, she'd be dead. And that was hardly a good thought, either. The only reason she wasn't dead right now was because she still had some use to the camp. The only doctor. The only person to help if things went bad out there with the mutes, with anything- yet how dumb and blinded they all were when the real problem was right inside the camp itself. She closed her eyes for a moment, tired. Her thoughts lingering, dissipating as she forced her hands to relax, using the other to massage the stiff muscles.

Ellie hated them all. She hadn't spent her entire life in medicine, learning, trying to make herself better than the drug addict of a mother and a loser, the absentee father, that she had known. She tried to make her aunt and uncle proud of her all through her childhood and beyond. Then she had tried to ensure Sam and Mary's happiness, and where had that gone? They were all dead! And she had thrown Toni away, the only good thing since any of this, because his life was threatened too. Sure, she meant what she said when she had said he was in danger around her, because of Pryde, because of the mutes, but his thoughts had not been far off either, not that she knew them. Death... it just seemed to follow her no matter what she did, no matter how good she was, or however she tried to fix her life.

They were gloom thoughts. Thoughts only brought on by the stresses of her guilt and of her anger. With a sharp huff, she tossed the rag aside in a lone basket, the action careless as she forced her feet to carry her to the nearest chair and shove herself down into it. She had an hour, or so, until her "replacement student" would arrive, but she could not bring herself to spend the time out in the camp. She didn't want to see any of them. She didn't want to see any of them because she still loved him, still loved the necklace that was now looped and worn around her ankle where it was hidden far beneath her clothing. Her guilt was enough to torment her for now.

With the little Ellie-brat out of the way, Wendy could now focus her efforts on Toni. Did she feel bad for what she had done to the blonde? Destroying her relationship, drugging her, watching her get blackmailed and threatened by Pryde? Only in the furthest corners of her heart that had long since been locked away. It wasn't fair, of course, but Ellie had done it to herself. She just couldn't listen to the rules, or keep her nose out of where it didn't belong. But she knew, too, that Toni would be hurting. They might not have been truly ready to marry each other, as their claim so went, but Wendy knew they were close. Close enough that Ellie's betrayal would have never been seen.

Except Wendy knew better. The Mutes creeped her out, sure, but she knew better than to open her mouth. She was lucky that she was on Pryde's good side, and she'd rather be informed about the monstrosities that she was doing instead of in the dark, naieve and taken advantage of. "Caswell! she would yell as she marched her way towards the barraks, her voice carrying. A gun was in her hands, but pointed to the ground, the safety on, only carrying it idly as she searched the crowd for the tall form that made up the dark-haired man.

"We've been havin' a mute group creeping towards the walls. We're going out to take care of it," she would announce, likely asuming that would be enough to get Toni on his feet. It was true, too, a group of mutes had gotten a little too close for comfort, which seemed to be an increasing occurance now days- not surprising, considering what Pryde was doing, and even if the scientists wanted Mutes, they couldn't rightly have them destorying the walls or keeping them locked in the city. "I'll meet you at the gate, then let's go."
