Roseatepaw had always been a light sleeper. Faint rustling sounds caused her to prick her ears, as she slowly began to awaken. "Ugh," she groaned, pulling herself up into a sitting position. The fawn colored she-cat was able to make out the forms of two other apprentices. "How am I supposed to sleep with you tossing and turning like that?" she mewed crossly, prodding Mousepaw with her right paw.

From her perch high up in an old oak, Giselle watched the hot, summer day draw to a close. Late evening light illuminated the she-cat’s calm, blissful expression. Across the forest, cloud layers striped the horizon in long billows of purple, amber, rose, and beautiful shades of red.
I wonder when Neruno and I will find the other slayers, she thought, her lustrous cream-colored tail sweeping from side to side. I think we still have a long way to go, but that’s all right...
Breaking her train of thought, she glanced down at her younger brother, who was scraping moss off the base of her tree. A look of curiosity crossed her features, as she called down to him.
“Neruno, why are you doing that?”
Her brother looked up from what he was doing and tensed. Then he blinked a couple times and lifted his head.
“Oh,” Neruno relaxed. “I was just changing our bedding,” he explained. “The moss we used for bedding last night started to, um, get a little uncomfortable.”
Giselle gave him a nod, signaling that he could continue.
“Thanks,” she mewed, turning her gaze back to the sky.

When the sun had set, Giselle leaped out of her tree and landed neatly on the ground.
“I think it’s about time I start hunting,” she meowed, unsheathing her claws.
    Neruno nodded in agreement.
“I’ll stay here and keep an eye on our stuff, then. Good hunting.”
Giselle quickly glanced around before leaping forward into the undergrowth.
“Make sure you keep your guard up,” she called back over her shoulder. “We don’t know this place very well yet!”

It didn’t take very long for Giselle to catch enough prey for both Neruno and herself. She returned with four, plump voles. Giselle and her brother ate two, and decided to save the rest for morning.
Giselle gazed up at the dark, starry sky.
I hope no one finds us, she thought, narrowing her eyes slightly. That certainly wouldn’t be good…

Dewberry was among the reeds along the bank of the river, hunting for water voles. A sudden cry caused her look up, and that was when she noticed the apprentice that had fallen in the river.
Swiftly, she slid into the water, and began swimming towards the apprentice, her strokes strong and confident.
"Hey!" she called. "Try to relax a bit, and keep your head above the surface. Keep struggling like that, and you'll swallow water!"

Dewberry soon noticed that she wasn't the only one trying to help the apprentice.
"Willowfleck," she called, "Do you think you'll be able to push her up a bit more so it'll be easier to get her to shore?"

    "And who might you be?"
Giselle and her younger brother, Neruno, slowly emerged from the dense undergrowth.
Keeping her gaze fixed on the orange tabby, she padded forward, sat down, and wrapped her tail around her paws. Neruno did the same.
"Well,"Giselle prompted. "May I know who I'm addressing?"

Neruno happened to be hunting mice in the barn. He had already caught three, but there was nothing wrong with catching more.
Suddenly, a rustling sound came from behind him. Slowly, he turned, and spotted a mouse in a pile of hay. Neruno quietly dropped into a crouch, and began slowly creeping forward, careful as to not make any noise. When he came about two tail lengths from his prey, he pounced, and gave the mouse a sharp nip on the back of its neck, killing it instantly. Neruno picked up his catch, his eyes glittering.
Wait'll Giselle sees how much I caught, he thought. She'll be so proud!
The young tom was about to go collect the other mice he had caught earlier, but then he noticed that something else was in the hay.
    It was two young kits!
Setting down the mouse, he padded forward to get a closer look.
    "Hello?" he mewed quietly.

    Neruno smiled.
"What are you two doing here all alone?" he asked, his eyes glittering with curiosity. "Where's your mother and father?"

Neruno looked startled. He opened to his mouth and started to say something, but his elder sister silenced him, and stepped forward.
"What are you talking about?" she inquired, narrowing her eyes. "My brother and I have never heard of this ThunderClan you speak of."

Giselle's gaze softened when she detected a hint of fear in Blaze's voice.
"Nice to meet you, Blaze," she meowed in a friendly tone. "I'm Giselle, and this is my brother Neruno."

Neruno's fur bristled. He eyed Sunray warily, and slowly began unsheathing his claws, in case he needed to fight.
A look of annoyance crossed Giselle's features. "I just said that we haven't heard of it," she meowed flatly. "Now are you going to tell us what you want, or not?"

"Oh," Giselle mewed sympathetically. "How long ago was this?"
Neruno suddenly got to his paws.
"I'm going hunting," he meowed. "I'll bring something back for all of us."
With that, he dashed off into the undergrowth, and was lost to view.
