    "Who said anything about murdering?" Matrix asked. "You simply transfer what you know from hunting into tracking down your enemies. That's all I'm saying. What, so now you're a peacekeeper?" He scoffed. "What if you have a purpose to take a life? Does that make everyone a murderer just because we kill other animals to survive?"

    The kit sighed. "Maybe I'm deluded, but I'm pretty sure murdering and killing are the same thing yet substantially different. Of course, you better have a really good, logical reason, but it all comes down to the same thing, right? It's all just the survival of the fittest."

    Matrix rolled his eyes at Gothika's blatant response. "I don't know why I even bother," he muttered. The tom-kit watched Caine circle around them, listening carefully to his explanations. They seemed plausible, so he went along with it. At a young age, Matrix had found that it was better to accept things with an open mind. Well, of course, unless he truly didn't believe it. But even then, it was stored somewhere deep in his mind, in the case he should ever change his mind. It was sort of a flawed logic.

    Stalking a bird and stalking a cat seemed to have enough in common. However, he remained still and quiet for a moment before pointing out the main problem he was having. "How do you stalk a bird?"

    Matrix shrugged passively. Gothika had put his thoughts into words, so there was no need to repeat. However, he did have something different to say. "....And if you end up killing him?" he asked. It was an irrelevant question and spoken to Caine, though clearly directed toward Gothika. He knew he should seriously stop provoking her yet it was a habit of his to speak that way.

    To be honest, the tabby had been surprised and slightly envious of the she-cat's obvious knowledge of hunting whereas he knew considerably less. But no matter, he was learning now, and he could live with a grudging respect for others, couldn't he? Maybe after a few moons of training, he could catch up. Just maybe.

    The dark brown tabby watched Goreypaw. He seemed quite relaxed yet focused intently on the apprentice. The kit noted how natural his actions were, which showed how hunting seemed to be second-nature. Matrix memorized the older cat's form and tried picking out the techniques he used. He gave the faintest of smiles when the tuxedo apprentice swiftly beheaded the bird.

    Now, Matrix was eager to try. He hadn't had very much experience, well close to none actually. He glanced at Gothika. "You can go first." The tom-kit wanted to have a little bit of time to process what he had learned so he could apply it later when it was his turn.

    Matrix, half lost in his own thoughts and half watching Gothika, scrambled to catch up on what he had inadvertently missed when he realized she had called his name. But by the time he had been shaken back into reality, the bird had already been led away. He glanced at the she-cat, seeing the fire blazing through her eyes, hopefully not directed at him.

    The kit stood by awkwardly, not wanting to disrupt their heated conversation, yet listening to Caine's advice. He didn't say anything, thinking that Gothika wouldn't appreciate any words of comfort or anything of the such. He sure wouldn't have.

    Matrix looked up at Caine. At first, he had been eager to learn. Now, the dark brown tabby hesitated yet after some thought, the kit realized it was all the better if he could practice now and get some pointers. It would be beneficial in the long run, or so he hoped. It had better pay off since he was going to make a fool of himself more or less.

    "Sure," Matrix grumbled grudgingly. There were really only two possible outcomes of his acceptance of Caine's offer. Either he would embarrass himself, which he didn't really mind, or he would get lucky, which he didn't mind either. Perhaps it would even be better to fail miserably and learn rather than get lucky.

    Determined to try his best anyway, Matrix dropped into a crouch, mimicking what he had picked up earlier. He had gathered that birds were easily frightened and flighty. Slowly, he crept forward, doing his best to tread lightly, not like the crunchy snow helped at all. The bird hadn't shown any sign of flight. Yet.

    He was almost there; his prey was pinpointed and mere pawsteps away. Silently, he crouched lower, ready to spring. All of the inching forward slowly had become unbearable and the boisterous kit was finding it rather difficult to pace himself.

    Well, that seemed close enough for Matrix. He sprung up quickly, claws unsheathed, as he aimed for the apparently unsuspecting bird. Frankly, he had nothing really planned: no embellishments, no back-up plans. The kit just aimed squarely for the bird's location at the moment. If that changed, well, Caine would have some more lessons to teach him.

    Matrix grinned at the feeble attempts of the bird and spent no time pulling in his catch and giving it a quick bite to the neck. There was no need to torture it anymore and let it alert the rest of the population. No, that wouldn't do. It was better to end its life quickly, so it could stop squawking. Matrix didn't let his happiness last very long. There was no need to get arrogant over it; it had just been beginner's luck, if anything.

    ooc }} Hey, I just wanted to let everyone know that I'll be on vacation until the 4th. So either someone can take over roleplaying Matrix or you can just drop him. I can just pick him up later (;

    The dark brown tabby dropped the bird unceremoniously on the ground, listening to Caine's words. "No kidding," Matrix muttered. "Though it's not like that could've given anyone more trouble than a few scratches." He studied a small scratch on his paw where the bird had managed to peck. "Perhaps if it were larger it would've been more of a threat," he added thoughtfully.

    But of course, the kit didn't dwell long on the topic. There was no point in questioning advice; Caine had much more experience than him. "What next?" he asked eagerly, dropping the subject and jumping to the next topic. Learning was so much more interesting than aimlessly wandering camp as he had always done prior to this day.

    Matrix nodded, not even slightly bothered that Caine had openly said that he was the one who was most lacking. He was several things, but not arrogant, or not completely so anyway. The kit knew that he could use--no, more like he needed--the help. So far, Caine had taught a lot... and the majority of the tips Matrix had picked up hadn't even been directly given to him. "Sounds good," the kit said. "How do we begin?"

    ooc }} Yeah. It should be about time for his apprentice ceremony. Could Caine mentor him? (;

    zephyr padded in calmly, immediately noting the bothered look of zircon, amusement gleaming in his eyes. "what are you doing? or rather, what are you thinking about?" he asked casually, getting straight to the point, even if he wasn't familiar with the other cat. the eleven moon cat contemplated what to say. "hello there. i'm zephyr. and you are...?" with his light gray and white windswept fur, he supposed he looked rather ridiculous, not that it mattered much to him. better to come off as some bumbling idiot than a condescending cat. though when he weighed the options, they were about equal. rather, the latter was more descriptive of the apprentice's true personality.

    a voice in his head interrupted his thoughts. [color=#E0FFFF]"why are you acting so smooth?" eurus asked in that sweet, innocent tone that she knew her brother absolutely hated, especially when it was laced with sarcasm.

    shut up, zephyr snapped mentally. we both know i'm much more artful with my choice of words. he huffed silently. i came off as a complete idiot. eurus answered with a small squeak, which zephyr instantly identified as stifled laughter. you know, it's infinitely irritating to have you in my head. did you really come back as a spirit just to plague me with your cheeky responses? you weren't like this when you were alive. this time there was no answer. that's what i thought.

    Matrix thought for a moment. "Are we going to start by catching prey again then? Can't we just skip straight to applying it? Just a quick fix-up and then moving on?" He glanced at the black she-cat. "I'm pretty sure Gothika already knows how to hunt well, so I wouldn't want to hold her back." He couldn't decide if this was truly the case or not, but it had already been said. It wasn't like the tabby had been speaking randomly though. Had he just subconsciously come up with a response? Oh well. He could take it either way.

    zephyr wasn't even bothered by zircon's huffy response. no, not bothered, but terribly amused. it only made him sure he was going to ask again later. "named after a mineral. i see." eurus commented. "by the way she's looking at you, i suppose you two'll get along just fine." zephyr ignored his sister and her sarcasm. "nice to meet you, zircon," he continued coolly, easily ignoring her glares. this was going to be fun.

    "isn't any of my business, is it? well, excuse me for merely wondering what you were doing. shall i leave you and your short temper to your own brooding, which is oh-so-important since it makes you feel so wonderful about yourself?" gone was the hard tone, which was replaced with a scathing, mocking tone. he had tattled off everything he had noticed and he was noting more things by the second.

    zephyr met the she-cat's eyes with his own calm, collected eyes that happened to be the color of clear skies at the moment, though they were slowly turning darker in color. he sensed some sort of impending battle, not that he minded. he was more than prepared. living and fending for yourself for the most part of your life could do that to you. "are you being serious?" eurus asked disbelievingly. "zephyr. this is perhaps the first real conversation you've had in a long while, and this is how you act? by fanning the fire?"

    didn't i tell you to shut up?! zephyr growled. "you're telling zircon she has anger issues? eurus scoffed. "wake up and take a look at yourself." whatever. he had just met someone that he decided he didn't like and eurus just had to take a liking to her. now he'd never be left alone.

    Matrix bounced lightly from paw to paw, obviously excited to begin his training. There was so much to learn and his ice blue eyes gleamed at the prospect of all Caine was going to teach him. Caine had been one of the first people to gain the kit's respect...and probably one of the last. But with all of his experience and advice, the brown tabby kit knew he could definitely improve, even if he didn't have much to start with. He couldn't wait.

    "What are we going to start off with?" he asked. "Hunting? Fighting? Probably hunting right? Since it ties in with fighting?" Gone was the apprentice's usual hard tone, to be replaced with the typical tone of an overzealous kit. Matrix realized this too because he fell silent, forcing himself to stop talking. Then Caine could probably find a spot to fit his words.

    "Tree hunting? Like, hunting trees? Or hunting for things in trees? Hunting for things that are in trees, right?" As if that was even a question. Matrix searched his brain hopelessly for the right answer to Caine's question, though he knew it wasn't there. "Because things in trees move, as cats do?" he guessed. It sounded ridiculous, even to him. "Okay... Maybe not."

    zephyr sighed dramatically, not bothering to unsheathe his own long claws that were always sharpened to a point. "a good fight, eh? i can give you a good fight, if you sincerely want one. if you want to fight, so be it. i don't mind practicing my skills every now and then." he grinned, clearly interested in seeing how this would turn out. Sure, he'd fought tons of wild animals and a couple of cats here and there, but this cat would be something fresh; he could tell by the look of insane anger so clearly shown in his eyes. pft, he was always careful about what he showed in his eyes.

    "careful? double check that for me, will ya?" eurus muttered. the gray and white tom would've rolled his eyes, yet he strengthened the guard on his emotions. it was something useful coming from his sister's mouth for a change, so he took her advice.

    "you do realize i've been trained my entire life to hunt and fight and nothing else?" and kill when i had to, he added mentally. [color=#E0FFFF]"when you had to or when you wanted to?" zephyr flicked his ear in annoyance. "so if you want to fight, please do hurry up. i'm not going to live forever. i have better things to do than stand here anticipating something that'll never come."

    [font=andale mono]The day hadn't started out the way perpetualkit had wanted it to; it never did. she had impossible fantasies in mind that, unfortunately, were too big to be real. but no matter. she had learned not to expect anything on days like these, when the light carefree air only suggested darker, stormier weather ahead. it gave a sense of false security yet didn't any day do that? the weather was unpredictable, so the kit supposed it was acceptable.

    the snow made a soft crunching sound as the kit's small white paws lightly danced across the fresh layer of frost. etch kicked up flurries, not minding the cold. sure, leaf-bare wasn't as warm and fulfilling as greenleaf, but that didn't mean she couldn't enjoy it, right? the four and a half moon old kit had made it her life's goal to look for the best everything. as usual, she went about camp on her own. though she could easily make friends if she wanted to, etch preferred to be more of a loner and keep to herself. to most, she seemed reserved, so it was easy to underestimate her.

    with leaf-bare bearing down on the clans, the she-kit found herself getting more restless and active, spending more and more time outside, unlike the rest of her clanmates, who huddled in their dens, trying to warm up. so here she was: outside, carelessly frolicking around. she hadn't even realized where she had been going when she decided to stop and figure out where she was.

    of course. it was the river. a place where she frequented every week. she strained her eyes and saw another figure, stiffening at the thought of getting caught. but she immediately relaxed, noting that the figure was much too small to be an older apprentice or warrior. so, naturally, she raced over, zigzagging across the snow. "hey," she chirped. "what's up?"
