He was avoiding my question. Smart. Either way, maybe I could use it to my advantage and psych him out. If I got him to focus on something other than killing me, then it'd be easier to take him down. I knew I could do it, whether or not it meant ending his life, and I'm sure he was aware of that too, but I also knew it was very possible that he could also defeat me. I had to try and get some sort of advantage on him. I was a witch-I knew his name, something that holds a lot of power in itself, and he was an extremely skilled witch hunter. How else would I be able to get an advantage other than psyching him out?
"You're the type with a depressing past. That's easy to see. You're determined, a hard worker, and you don't like to lose. You don't seem like the type that would waste away in a place like this." As our drinks were set down on the bar in front of us, my finger traced the rim of the glass as I studied him up close. Witch hunters always had a reason to be in that profession. What was his reason? Was it a sense of justice, or something deeper than that? I was determined to find out.

He was trying to throw me off by telling me that my assumptions on him were wrong, but I knew for a fact that I was right. I knew I had to have struck at least a small chord with him. He did a good job at hiding it, though. As soon as he asked why I was here, I wanted to laugh. Like he didn't know why I had gone into this place. I could either play it cool, or cut straight to the point that he could cut the dumb act. I felt like it'd throw him off more to just say the truth, so I took a sip of the overly disgusting drink and looked at him with a smirk. "I think you've got a pretty good guess why I'm here." The tune of our dance was changing, speeding up in anticipation, and him and I both could feel it

That was it, the act was over, we weren't going to keep up the casual conversation that implied we had no idea who the other was. The slightly odd thing was that he was still putting up the front that he was under the influence of alcohol. He had to have been acting, right? I took another sip of the ale, looking off at the other people in the building. "I have to say, you seem to have quite the reputation, Adrian," I said, his name slipping off my tongue, smooth and sugary like sweet, melting butter. I knew that making an attack at him in this crowded room would be stupid and reckless, which I figured that the Hunter also thought. If he had been dumb enough, he would've come after me as soon as he stepped foot in the tavern after me.

"So am I," I stated simply, bringing the cloudy glass of ale to my lips and tipping it up, taking a large chug from it. After I took a large enough drink to satisfy myself, I set the drink down and cracked my knuckles. We were both ready to kill one another, no longer interested in talking. What was the point in speaking if we were just going to end up killing each other anyway? He and I came from different worlds, worlds that clashed and collided and mixed like oil did with water. We were enemies, and we weren't in the mood for anything other than defeating the other and leaving this place in the dust.
"Shall we finish this?" I asked, once again looking at the young man. As soon as we ended this, the sooner I could leave and hopefully not see another Hunter for a while.

The poor little human was disgusted by me. I smirked, letting out a small giggle as I stood up with a curtsy, looking back up at him with the same look he had been giving me. "Thank you, you're such a gentleman." I stood up straight before I turned to the doorway, my smirk growing bigger. The Hunter would have to distract the bartender, but of course, I could easily do it with a snap of my fingers. Of course, it would serve as a good observation to see him work to distract, to warm me up to his skills. Yes, I liked that idea. But I didn't want to wait too long- maybe I could just help he poor guy out, since I was going to beat him. I had no other choice but to beat him.
I made a move to grab my drink, but my hand knocked against the glass and it fell, spilling the rest of the contents. "Oh my!" I exclaimed, a shocked expression on my face. Although I acted surprised, I had meant to do that to begin with. The bartender rushed over with a towel, and I looked at him apologetically. "I'm sorry!"
"It's okay," the man said to me, giving me a smile before putting the towel down on the counter. I took my chance to walk off, towards the door, head held high.

Although this man was eager to kill me and vice versa, he did have manners. He opened the door for me, and to be fairly honest, it was the first time someone who's intentions weren't particularly bad -depending on who you asked, of course- had done a polite thing like that towards me. "Thank you," I muttered as I walked into the dingy, dimly lit storage area. This looked like the perfect place to take the Hunter down without an interruption.
After I had stepped inside, I stopped at the center of the room and looked at the young man who had followed me inside. Unbuttoning and tossing my cloak aside, I put my hands on my hips and the smile that I had out in public vanished. It was almost sad how both him and I had to hide ourselves, to put on a metaphorical mask and try to fit in with the likes of society. In more ways than one, him and I were a lot alike, other than the fact that we were practical sworn enemies.
"You know, we could always just forget this encounter and go our separate ways," I suggested, the flickering light in the lantern casting an ominous glow throughout the room.

I cracked my knuckles, not bothering pulling my short dagger out of its sheath on my belt. There was no use for me to have it, really, but it came in handy for whenever magic was too obvious. In this scenario, there was of course no point in using anything but magic-him and I both knew what we were. There was no holding back. This was life or death.
"It was worth a try," I sighed, holding out my hands with the palms up. I was ready to use my magic, and he was ready to use his weapons. Only one of us would be able to walk away from this. "And who's to say that you don't like me? You shouldn't always judge a book by its cover." We weren't able to feel anything but dislike -even hatred- for each other. He was a hunter, and I was a witch. Him and I were enemies by nature. If we weren't who we were then maybe things would be different, but it didn't change anything to think that way.

I shook my head, pointing at him with a rueful smile. "That's where you're wrong, Hunter. Magic doesn't make me evil." In my other hand, a small ball of fire flamed up as bright as my hair. "It's how I use it that does. You hunt not only me, but probably the innocent as well. That's what you all do."
The young man in front of me was intelligent, definitely not naive, but at the same time, oblivious. It wasn't that I didn't have a heart, that I wasn't at least somewhat kind, that I was a complete monster. It was that my heart was cold, frozen from the hard lives that most witches went through. I had no reason to live other than because I needed to live on for the people that have left me. I was a monster, but not just because I was born into magic. It was that I used it mercilessly.
Then again, aren't I thinking the same of hunters? I wondered. My perception on hunters was based on my experiences, like seeing my family killed. Maybe that was the same for him.

He had a reason to hate witches. Whether or not I couldn't help being a witch, he hated me, and it didn't matter if I was innocent. This young man had a reason to hate me. Not me specifically, but what I was. It was personal, to an extent. I just didn't know how.
"I guess you dying is the price you pay to hunt us, then." The flame in my hand grew slightly. " Ignis pila," I whispered, and the flame shot forward, zooming past the Hunter and just barely scorching him. It was almost like a warning shot, to let him know that I wasn't going to go down, or at least not easily.
"It's nothing personal," I mimicked, almost in a mocking way. In my case, I didn't just hate hunters because I was a witch. I hated them for what they took from me. I might be a fire, but I was a wildfire compared to the ones that hunters have hurt. They swept them away like flooding waters, extinguishing a harmless little campfire. Their waters wouldn't be able to put me out, though. I refused to let that happen.

I turned to the side, the knife zipping past me and grazing my cheek. There was a small sting, and I realized that he had just barely hit me, like I had just barely hit him. Whether or not he meant to not do too much damage, I had been too slow to act and it could have cost me more than just a stratch. I retaliated instantly, another ball of fire erupting in my hand. "I've known the price I must pay for my whole life, Hunter. Ignis pila!" I shouted in song, the tone of my voice causing the fire to fly forwards even faster. I strafed to the left as quick as the fire shot out. We were no longer carefully waltzing. We were at the climax, the actions quick-paced and dangerous. One misstep and one of us would fall, be done for. The other would be the victor of this dance. Neither of us could let that happen and we knew it.
As I danced to the side, I felt an ominous presence, a strange aura. It felt like something was off. What was this feeling I was getting? Did the Hunter feel it too? It was strange. What did it mean?

Instead of darting away, I swiftly grabbed the knife out of the air, my hand cutting against the blade. My instincts had kicked in at that moment, and I threw the blade to the side. He could feel it. I knew he could. That pause between our fighting was a confirmation of the mutual confusion. The air felt thick, so thick that we would have trouble cutting through it with one of his knives. He probably thought it was my doing- if I were him, I'd think the same. I knew he didn't have an ability to cause this dark feeling, this kind of foreboding sense.
The flame in my hand suddenly extinguished. "Ligabis ad tenebras!" I sang, and suddenly the room illuminated. If there was darkness, the light I had caused would surely get rid of it. But that wasn't the case, for the light went out as quickly as it came. I ignored the strangeness of this and went back to attacking the Hunter. "Mittent aquas." A stream of water sprayed from my hand and towards the Hunter, the singed wall behind him sizzling from it.

I managed to dodge one knife, catching another and the other snagging my clothes and causing a cut along my side. As a small trickle of blood stained my shirt and dripped between my fingers, I threw the knife at a wall. I could try to throw it back at him, but my aim would be off, considering my throwing hand was cut and the dark aura from this room was distracting me. Was it that we had bigger problems to deal with than killing each other?
"Illuminet!" I shouted, and light began to form at my fingertips. I shot streams of light in the hunter's direction, knowing that if he weren't possessing any dark energy, like a hex bag or some cursed object, then it wouldn't do any harm to him. It was worth a shot, because who else could be causing this?
As the temperature in the room dropped, fog formed from my breath. This wasn't right. This feeling I got from the atmosphere around us... it wasn't good at all.

Though I wasn't considering him to be the most dangerous threat in the room, I had my guard up. The ribbons of light threaded between my fingers, slithering like small snakes to twist around my arms. "Though we're both eager to kill each other, I think you realized that there's something else going on around here. " To him, with the streams of light flickering around my arms and illuminating my hair like a flame, I probably looked like some sort of monster to him. No wonder he wanted to kill me, he probably loathed magic with all of his being.
As I looked at him, the lantern went out, but the light that danced over my clothing kept the room dimly lit. Both of our breaths came out in small clouds, and I felt myself shiver slightly. This was dark. Darker than I was used to.

I moved towards the hunter, closing the distance between us. The fighting between us had ceased, for our new found enemy was greater than our mere squabble in comparison. The vines of light around me stretched out like spider legs and wrapped around his body like they were with mine. I didn't will them to do so, they did it on their own, voluntarily, for some reason just reaching out to him like he was a magnet. We were both twined in the light threaded around us, making us look like two fireflies at midnight.
"I don't know. This is something I'm inexperienced with. I haven't felt something so dark before..." My voice trailed off as I looked around the dark room. Was this the only place that was being affected? What about the rest of the tavern? I looked over at the hunter, now technically my partner in solving this, with a furrowed brow. "Do you think that the rest of the tavern is experiencing the same thing? Or even worse... the rest of the city?"

It was almost comical that we had been trying to kill each other, but now we were working as allies for the moment, the light binding us together to protect us from this dark energy. What an odd team we were. I doubted that he'd turn on me while our focus was on a bigger problem, but afterwards, there was no telling what he'd do. I needed to keep my guard up.
I wrung my hands together before grabbing the hunter's sleeve and pulling him towards the door with me. This was no time for him or myself to be worried about us touching. " I swear to the gods, if Nahel is hurt," I mumbled, fear suddenly gripping me as tightly as I gripped the door handle. If my familiar were to be taken from me by something this dark, a simple resurrection spell may not do the trick. All I could hope for was that my companion was okay.
I took a deep breath and swung the door open, half expecting it to be alright, half expecting a massacre.

I didn't know what to expect, but when I was greeted with nothing but darkness, I felt fear grab onto me as tightly as I was holding onto the cloth of the hunter's clothing. The once lively tavern was now dark, more black than the feathers on Nahel. The eerie sensation that came from outside the room made me want to slam this door shut and hide in the storage room.
Though I was a witch, I didn't possess the ability to see clearly in the dark. Even if I did, this energy was too foreboding to even make that possible. I could see nothing but the Hunter and the threads of light. "Can you see anything?" I asked him in a low voice. Although I doubted that he could, there was always a possibility. The tavern was quiet. Not the type of silence that was welcoming, like you would find in the dead of night or the break of dawn in a forest surrounded by nothing but trees. It was the kind of silence that gave you that gut-wrenching fear of the unknown, and the feeling that something horrible was lurking within this soundless place.

Although we were connected by light, I made sure to keep a tight hold onto his sleeve. We didn't know what could happen if we split apart. If something could shut up this loud, dirty tavern so seemingly easily, then it could probably take us down as well. As we gingerly entered the pitch black room, the darkness almost felt like it was trying to swallow us with it. Although they were dim, the threads of light seemed to protect us even a little from this darkness. It illuminated barely anything, but at least we were able to see each other, as we were wrapped in this light.
The Hunter asked me if I knew what this was, and I wished that I could say I knew exactly what was going on and how to stop it, but the problem was, I didn't. There were dark magicks that I knew, but this wasn't one of them. I shook my head, my eyes meeting his. "No, not at all. Something this dark, I thought I would've seen it in some sort of book... Something..." My eyebrows furrowed as I tried to rake up any information I could think of writhin my mind about what could be going on. "I've got nothing. What do you think happened to the people who were in here?"

"We have to find out what's happening," I agreed, and as he opened the door I held my breath. We didn't know what awaited us beyond that door. As soon as he opened the door to emptiness, worry and fear took over me. I ran out into the empty street, looking around for my companion. The threads of light still connected him and I still, and with that and the moon being the only light that we had, it was so dimly lit that I couldn't see if my bird was anywhere. He was too dark, and blended in with the shadows. It had been a good thing until now.
"Nahel!" I shouted, frantically looking towards the sky. I cupped my hands over my mouth, took a deep breath, and screamed. "Nahel!"
The Hunter probably thought I was nuts, getting worried over a bird. Then again, he probably thought I wasn't capable of having simple human emotions, seeing that he thought of me as a monster, a demon that only felt a lust for destruction. But that wasn't truely the case. Nahel had been there for me when my parents died, and has been my only companion since then. He was, in a way, family. If anything had happened to him, I didn't know what I'd do.

I stiffened when I felt the hand of the hunter on my shoulder. The vibe coming from him wasn't even close to being threatening- it felt awkward and unsure. It seemed like although he couldn't comfort someone to save his life, he was still trying. It made me crack a slight smile.
Sitting here screaming for my familiar wouldn't do anything. It wouldn't bring him to me. I just needed to hope that he felt the darkness in time and fled to safety. I straightened my back and cleared my throat, looking at the uncomfortable witch hunter, who was currently trying to make me, a witch, feel better.
"It probably made you die a little inside to use my name," I half-joked, although I knew that it probably did. I turned my head towards the darker shadows surrounding us, and even though we were alone, the feeling of being watched by prying eyes was unbearable. "I wonder why we weren't taken along with everyone else in the city..." I said, attempting to change the subject from my small freak out.

Both of us clearly happy to pretend that moment didn't happen, and we focused on the problem at hand. This thing, whatever it was, kept us here out of everyone else for a reason. Although sworn enemies, we had to work together for this and we knew it. Even so, I figured he had taken note of how deeply worried I was about my familiar, and planned to use it against me when the time came.
My mind went to who, or what, was behind this. What was their motive? Why were we left untouched? If this was part of a game or a test, then what were we supposed to do? What leads did we have on what we needed to accomplish? How did we pass this quiz?
"It doesn't make any sense..." I said quietly, my voice trailing off in question. Neither of us understood the meaning of this. "How far do you think this has spread?" I asked the Hunter. This thing reminded me of some sort of plague, wiping everyone away. The only problem is, we didn't know what happened to the people being wiped away. Were they dead? Held captive? Did they just... disappear without a trace?
