Mudpaw sat, listening with slightly wide eyes. He had not even suspected that Artificialreality was not clan born. She was a faithful warrior though, and had the blood of any clan cat he knew. His heart sank at the sound of her mate and kits dying. Battling was a way of life and every cat took the chance but it was so rare to happen. Kits also died often in leaf-bare, greencough was nasty on the young and old. It was never easier to accept though and Mudpaw did not comment on their death yet. Her last kit though, unthinkable. One so young had no need to die and by a rouge.

When she began to cry Mudpaw couldn't help but stand and close the space between himself and her. He rubbed his head against her shoulder, hoping to help calm her in some way. His tail gently stroked her own, hoping it wouldn't cause her to run away. His mother had often done this to him as well, and it had helped calm him down.

"Thank you for telling me." He muttered softly. "I am sorry so much bad has happened, it never should have. Yet you always seem so strong." Was this why she was so cut off from everyone else? He could understand why now she did not want to be close to anyone. Everyone she had loved had slowly been killed, either by enemy claws or by natural causes.

Mudpaw paused, he wasn't really sure what to say to her. He had never had to comfort another cat before, except maybe his mother after his sister's death.

"You don't need to worry about me though. I'm going to be strong enough to protect everyone." His voice was strong for a moment, his green eyes glittering. This is why he wanted to become the best warrior, to help all his clanmates from being killed or even injured to badly. "And you and me can protect Fernpaw from anything." He hadn't even formally met the young she-cat yet but already he wanted to protect her for Aritificalreality's sake.

Surprised by the impact Shrew went sprawling to the ground as well. She hit the ground on her back, but it was soft. She turned and looked at Sunlight and laughed. "Does it still count even if I fell down?" This game was amazing. It even had practical sense to it. This could help both swift-runners and prey-hunters with keeping balance and keeping light on their feet. "I'm glad you came up with this game."

Mudpaw was glad to see that for a few seconds Aritificialreality had begun to calm down. She even seemed to be happy for a moment. He gave her a confused look. "No I don't think you're crazy at all. It is a real fear to worry about, I worry about it all the time." He gave her a large smile and then suddenly he saw the expression change in her eyes. That happy look was gone and then replaced with fear and doubt again.

Mudpaw paused. He couldn't physically fight a disease, no one could. He paused to think, knowing his answer had to be just right. He took a deep breath before speaking. "You're right I cannot really help against that, but that is the one thing every cat needs to face. Out medicine cat is amazing and me and Fernpaw are both young and strong. We could fight off greencough and so could many of the other warriors. Sickness is a circle of life, unable to be stopped. I can help stop that which can be changed, but not a sickness. I'm sorry." Mudpaw looked at the ground knowing his answer wasn't a very good one.

He nuzzled her shoulder again to try and comfort her again.

Unaware of the inner turmoil that Artificialreailty was having, Mudpaw could only feel joy that she hadn't turned away from him like he thought she would. He liked being able to be close to her, to do something to help. It was something simple but it seemed to calm her.

Mudpaw looked at her with glittering green eyes, hoping they seemed calm and soothing. "You don't need to worry about me, I'll protect both of you. I don't want anything happening to you either." Mudpaw knew now that above all he would have to protect Fernpaw with all his might. Being younger she could be in a lot more trouble than him. Right now most of the clan seemed to be in peace so there wasn't a huge worry but things changed quickly in the clans.

He could heart her mutter softly under her breath but Mudpaw could only pick up a few words. He wished badly that he could read minds just for a moment. He put a paw on top of hers, and pressed into her shoulder. "Nothing bad is going to happen. Even if there is a sickness I'll find a way to heal it."['b] Honestly Mudpaw wasn't sure how he would do that, but he would find a way. 'Please Starclan give me the strength to be able to hold this promise true.'

"I don't want to lose you."

Mudpaw couldn't help the loud purr that began in his throat. His whole body now felt warm and fuzzy, his heart content for the first time in a long time. It felt nice to be needed, and it felt even better to know that he could help, to make a difference.

He was surprised to know he was the first one to ever listen, had no one ever asked? Why wouldn't someone in the clan just sit and listen?

"I will always be here for your Artificialreality, I promise that. Whenever you need me, you just find me. I'll do anything for you." He grinned at her softly, not so much afraid of what emotions he showed now. He knew he could trust Artificialreality anything, and she him.

For a moment he was a little irritated about Fernpaw's name but then he quickly pushed it aside. She needed to care just as much about her apprentice as about him. If he had felt complete before, he felt even more so after her last words she spoke.

"I can't imagine what I'd do without you either." Mudpaw gave another very soft purr, resting his head now against her shoulder. Feeling it was okay to say now, he spoke again. "Thank you for telling me, you're the first one to ever trust me so much. And I know I can trust you."

Shrew gave a huff of fake anger. Usually she would have gotten angry for real but she was actually enjoying herself and didn't feel a single spark of anger. "Well that's a bummer. Guess I'll just have to make sure I don't fall off next time." She stood, shaking the dirt off of her fur before leaping to the nearest boulder to her.

Mudpaw felt the shiver go across his body at her words. It wasn’t one of those shivers a cat got when they were scared, or angry or even battle crazed. He honestly had no emotion to go with the shiver that went through his body. It felt good though, and he wished it would happen again. If he could will his body to do it, he would have. Knowing that Artificialreality would always want him was nice, it was amazing in fact.

He pressed his head against her head again when she mentioned those she had lost. It was a past she should never forget but it was time for her to see the future, to stop living in the past. ”I want you to know I’m never going to try to take their place, you don’t ever need to forget them.” He paused for a moment. ”But it doesn’t hurt to trust again, and I’m glad you decided to try.” He smiled softly at her, his green eyes sharp.

Her thank you seemed to unneeded. Every cat needed someone, and Mudpaw had figured that out only a few moments ago. He himself use to be content to just sit and watch, to listen rather than to speak. Artificialreality could be his one cat that was different. It was fitting since she was different from other cats, but she did not judge. That was one reason why Mudpaw did not stick around many of the other apprentices, they were immature and incapable of not making fun of his missing ear.

”I want to thank you too.” His voice was a little rough with his own emotions thinking about the torment and the fact that now he had a cat who wouldn’t mention it. He was surprised slightly when she turned to face him. He stared for a moment, just looking at her before he had to look away his ears going hot. He quickly looked back, smiling.

”You’re the bravest cat I know Artificialreality. You’re amazing.”

Moth yawned when his name was called. He crawled slowly from under the bush, stretching his limbs. There were several new scents now and he was surprised to find two new cats, a tom and a she-cat. Both seemed fit and fine so Moth only nodded to them, falling in step with the group of cats. It seemed they were up for a long journey this morning. 'Now the work begins.'

Juniper squealed at the sight of her first friend, bounding towards him for a moment. She gave a quick nuzzle and then bounded after Sage. "Where are we going?" She had seen Sage snape her tail across Dark's face and confusion lit her face for a moment but she did not comment. She only stared at Dark for a moment before looking at Brightstar. Explore? She loved exploring!

Moth gave a large yawn, his eyes only half open and still full of sleep. He had been hoping to get a little more sleep but he was going to need to get use to this getting up early. It had been so much easier when he was younger. "No need to be greedy, we only need to take as much as we need to survive. Besides if it is to big there is no way we could hold on to all of it, and there are still other cats around here that use these woods. We would have to deal with a lot of angry cats." Moth knew he had stepped in for Brightstar, but he hoped if she hadn't already thought this it would make her think that.

Juniper grinned, she didn't care what they were doing she just want to explore. She really did not understand the idea of boundries, she never had to live by them but it seemed important. "Are we looking for anything speical?"

Moth looked around him, eyeing the same large trees. He couldn't see anything prey and his nose wasn't use to picking out everything like Brightstar's but he would take her word on it. His own nose was more intune to the smell of hebs, berries and other plants that would help heal and he could smell some of those. "It looks alright. Is there water nearby? And maybe we could get an area close to a field, that is where some of my favorite things grow to help heal." He knew it might be hard to get his demand but Moth knew he would need them.

Mudpaw was never really sure if it was because he was young when the attack happened but he never really thought much about when his sister was killed. He remembered the pain from his ear being ripped and chewed off but not much more. His mother had come in snarling and spitting and after a battle that seemed like forever more warriors showed up to scare off the fox. His sister had been lying as a bloody mess but he had been quickly whisked away to the medicine cat to be treated for his own injuries.

"Honestly a lot of it is a blur. But thank you so much, that means a lot to hear!" He had to look away in fear of Artificialreality laughing at him. His body felt so warm he wondered if he was coming down with something for a moment, but it was a good feeling. It was nice, wonderful actually, to hear her complimenting him.

Mudpaw nodded in agreement. Cats who got everything wanted or didn't have a hard training usually ended up dead or useless. He couldn't stand those cats.

"It is really sad, but I guess that is Starclan's way sometimes." Starclan wasn't always nice and most of the time it just seemed cruel but he couldn't judge the way the ancient cats decided to run things. It was something he had never questioned and never wanted to. Besides why worry about something he couldn't control?

Her whispered words hit Mudpaw hard. She could see that the worst was over, that there was a light at the end of the tunnel. Was it him she saw at the end? He hoped so. Maybe there were a few other cats there too but he wanted himself to be there.

"It is already here." He purred loudly, his green eyes bright and now on her face. Mudpaw knew he wanted to be with her every step of the way of this new life change. He wanted to be next to her forever.

Shrew watched Sunlight fly through the air. She was impressed by how easily she leaped, and with such confidence. She tried scrambling away from the leaping she-cat but her balance was throne. She gave a frown as she watched Sunlight come flying in.

Moth looked at Dark, his eyes expressionless. He had no reason to distrust this cat, it wasn't in his nature, but he seemed to like to egg cats on. "I am more familiar with herbs growing in the fields. We do not need one but to be near one. If I can get to it in a short time and back then there is no problem. Most of the cats know me and usually do not attack." Moth looked around, his nose twitching slightly as he tried to find the familiar scent of herbs. He stood, almost startled by the squirrel, before he could catch the scent he was looking for. "Yes there is a good amount here." Herbs loved water and the more the better. "This should be a good place."

Juniper watched the squirrel too and for a moment almost took off after it but Sage stayed put so she did too.

Juniper grinned and quickly nodded at Sage's suggestion. "I would love to!" Already she could see herself catching a quick little squirrel or tiny little mouse. She did not have much experience in catching things but it couldn't be that hard. She was a cat and wired to catch the food she needed to survive.

Shrew laughed after Sunlight went jumping by. Her heart had stopped for a moment at the thought of the she-cat crashing into her but luck was on her side. "You sure did!" This time Shrew went leaping after Sunlight, feeling light on her feet. This was probably the most fun she had had since she was a young kit.

Once she forgot about keeping her balance, Shrew noticed she did a lot better at keeping on the boulders. 'Maybe this is just like hunting. You can't over think it or you'll lose the prey.' Sunlight was doing a great job of being able to avoid her. It was fun being able to watch her launch herself from boulder to boulder with seemingly ease. "You're going to be the death of me Sunlight! I'm not as young as you."

Juniper waited for the other cats to respond, her tail twitching in excitement. This would be her first catch in the clan, to show she was good at something. Her eyes were large and bright as she waited for answers.

Moth shrugged softly, he could go for a meal. "If you could catch something for me I would be grateful." He hadn't eaten a lot of wild animals before, just the occasional mouse he managed to catch or a dying bird. It tasted alright and he could get use to it.

Mudpaw only nodded his head. She just had to get out of here and she would be alright. Riverclan did not chase loners forever, just until they were off their territory. "Yep that is all you have to do, and probably not come back." It was harsh, and probably not a tempting offer. Riverclan had a lot of food for any loner, but every clan cat needed every piece of kill the territory could offer and they could not spare any for Darkheart.

Mudpaw looked at Mistywing and then shrugged. "I don't see why you can't. It's not like it is any good to us half eaten." Maybe he was becoming a little soft? He didn't like the idea of a cat starving and it was already half eaten.
