Unlike probably every student in existence, Nathan Bennett loved Monday mornings. Weekends for him were at his mother's house, a literal hell. The single story 'house' was forty-five minutes from town on a lonely dirt road. The building was falling to pieces like his mother, and damned building didn't even have air conditioning or wifi. Nathan loved his mom, he really did, but why the hell was the woman determined to cut herself off and live practically in the middle of the woods?

Nathan thumped down the stairs with his backpack flying. His mother was already up, curled up at her desk with a hot cup of coffee held in her small hands. Her head was bowed to stare at a stack of papers. "Mom?" Nathan repeated.
His mother jerked up, her frizzled blonde hair bouncing. "Oh, bye honey." she said distantly. "Have a nice week at school." She paused for a moment with a faint smile, then her pale eyes returned back to the papers.Nathan shook his head as he grabbed a bagel from the fridge and stuffed it in his mouth. It was probably another rejection slip.
The ride to school was uneventful, per usual. Nathan knew he wouldn't have to get up as early if he left Sunday night to go to his dad's before school the next day, but in all honesty, he enjoyed the sparse moments he spent with his mother, as long as she wasn't poring all her time in another manuscript. He wasn't much a writer himself, preferring science and math.
Nathan entered the building with a few minutes to spare. Caleb was already waiting at his locker for him, his eyes glued to his phone. "Hey." he greeted Caleb as he started to spin the lock. "So any luck with-"
"I fried it." Caleb didn't bother to look up and only pushed his glasses up as they started to slide down his nose.
"Oh." Replied Nathan, startled. "So what are we gonna do about it?"
Caleb shrugged. "I dunno. We'll figure it out after school I guess..."
Nathan shook his head, grabbing a textbook and a couple binders from his locker. "You're an awful project leader, you know that right?"
Caleb finally looked up. "I'm already accepted into all the schools I applied to. I don't really care about robotics anymore. It's not really my thing anymore." With that, the bell rang. "See you in calc." Caleb added before he disappeared into the masses of students in the halls.
Nathan paused for a moment, watching his friend go. With a sigh he shut his locker and started to make his way to the library. His first class, creative writing, was a joke. He had only taken the elective to please his mom and to get in another credit. Little did he know, there were twenty others in the class in similar positions as him. He had accepted his first period as optional. If he had nothing better to do; he would maybe listen in. But most days, like today, he had stacks of homework due later that day.
He kept to himself in the hallway, following closely behind a pair of girls that couldn't have gone slower. "-hear about Jamie Boyce? Well you'll never guess what happened..." Nathan managed to zone them out. The name sounded familiar, but he couldn't have cared less about the latest gossip. He managed to brush by them as the last stragglers walked into their classrooms. The halls were empty now, blissfully silent. Nathan took his time on the way to the library.
There wasn't anyone in there, he noticed at first glance. Thank God, finally some peace and internet to try to finish his English essay. But as strode deeper into the library towards a table by the window, he spotted someone else. There was a girl sitting by herself, with a book practically in her face. Huh.
Nathan turned away and sat down at the table, then pulled out his laptop from his grey backpack. He set it on the table and flipped the screen up. Finally to finish his essay. Nathan jabbed his thumb at the power button, thinking. His essay was due next period. What was he supposed to write about again? Nathan's realization was cut short as he noticed his screen was still black. Damn it. He left his charger in his room. At his mom's house. Nathan swore under his breath and lifted his thumb up to his mouth, starting to bite at his nail.
Nathan lowered his thumb. "Hey," he called over to the girl with the book. "You have a laptop charger I can borrow?"
