it was sweet relief for the stallion to be thrown from the constant pitching and rocking of the belly of the ship. although he hit his head on the plunge into the icy, salty sea, he was quite alright.
now he kicked through the water, his strong legs cutting through the rising and falling sea as it pitched the horses to-and-fro. luckily the 12-year-old Spanish Mustang hadn't been cast too far away from the others, so he was able to tread over, using the current to propel him toward them. just catching onto the end of Willow's words, the stallion heaved a ragged, exhausted sigh. already he was beginning to tire from the constant kicking motion of his legs. the sea was a dark, heaving beast that tossed the equines around like little flies caught in a fly trap when you simply flick it.
the sky was misty, and as the suggestion registered in his brain, the stallion thought it was a bit of a foolish idea. scoffing to himself, the stallion went along and followed the slightly spread-out group of horses as they began to inch away from the ship until it was no longer in the stallion's view. he breathed another ragged sigh to see the damned ship that had always tossed him back-and-forth in its belly disappear through the haze of mist that clouded the stallion's vision.
the stallion didn't say anything, for it would waste the breath and energy he needed to keep his head above the water as well as his body moving forward - moving west. nostrils flared, the stallion kicked after the vague shapes of the other horses who had been in the ship also, trusting their bodies to lead the supposed-leader to safety.
( I have read that series, too, although I need to re-read it; they just came out with a new book, so I'm going to re-read the first one before I read any of the other ones. I like Hold On, too, but I can't remember all of them. haha. )
