Val laughed—the first time he'd laughed since the massacre. He dug his heels into his horse's flank, and in a flurry of hoofbeats, Val took off after Mia. Houses and buildings streaked by, and people shouted or leapt to the side as Val galloped past.
"Sorry!" Val shouted over his shoulder when he almost knocked over a fruit cart.
Val managed to draw up next to Mia near the edge of the village, but he couldn't pull past her. They were almost evenly match. Almost. Val put everything he had into his horse, but the beast couldn't seem to put on a burst of energy to beat Mia.
