The kitten stirred once touched, slowly at first, and let loose a disgruntled squeak. It was cold. He had been very warm before, but now it was cold. He stumbled blindly, searching for his mother's milk by scent alone. The sweet scent of milk was contrasted by his mother's fear-scent, but the kitten wasn't conscious enough to truly recognise this or care. Milk was his entire world.

He didn't have a perception of time, but the time taken to finally taste the miracle of creamy milk on his tongue was too much time. With all the strength he could muster, the kitten guzzled it greedily, kneading his mother's belly in a silent demand for more liquid life.

Unaware of the serious conversation his mother was having, Stonekit continued to suckle. He drank and drank, until his tiny stomach was full. Finally satisfied, he purred softly. Curling into his mother's belly, he dozed, comforted by the warmth and the fullness.

Eyes screwed shut, Stonekit sniffed the mossy curtain protecting him from the outside world. Slowly, hesitantly, he cracked one eye open. It stung, and he had to fight the urge to close it again. This was not a pleasant first experience with leaving the nest. Why was it so bright out there? Stonekit let his eye close again, then reluctantly poked his head past the moss. The world was flooded with a horrible light, but he had to endure it. He had to explore, even if it hurt. He was not going to open his eyes.

One shaky pawstep after another, Stonekit left the safe dullness of the nursery. It wasn't so bad, he decided. The ground beneath his paws was the same solid rock. Although... He would wait before opening his eyes again. As gracefully as he could, he tried to explore by scent and sound alone. A soft, trickling sort of noise made him pause. What was that? He took another step forward, then let loose a terrified yowl as he slipped off the edge of a rock and into a stream.

    Jewelpelt

Stonekit dangled loosely from Jewelpelt's mouth for what felt like forever, his amber eyes wide open with fright. If he hadn't just been thoroughly drenched, his fur would have been standing on end. His paws were back on the blessedly still ground again and although they were wet, he could grip just fine. "Sorry, mother." mumbled Stonekit, looking down as a wave of embarrassment and shame crashed violently into him.

Under usual circumstances, being groomed by Jewelpelt bothered him - he could do it himself - but for now he tolerated and evened enjoyed the oddly soothing nature of it. "Should go inside now?" He asked, unsure if he was disappointed or relieved by the prospect.

His eyes were adjusting to the light now, so that it was no longer harsh and jarring. Without the pain deterring him, Stonekit was much more eager to explore.

Stonekit brightened, although his tail was still curled beneath his body nervously. He stepped forward, away from Jewelpelt, and turned to look her in the eyes as he spoke. "Promise?" He asked solemnly.

She hadn't promised yet, but Jewelpelt's protection certainly made him feel safer. She had rescued him from the stream, after all, and always kept him fed. Well, not always. Sometimes the other mother fed him. Stonekit paused, then looked around to see if the other mother was outside. "Does the other mother live here too?" He wondered, when he didn't see her.

He had expected to recognise her immediately, despite not being sure what she looked like.

Stonekit blinked, unable to completely believe Jewelpelt. The other mother's scent was distinctly memorable and comforting, like Jewelpelt's scent. It smelled like safety. She was important. She must be. "Can meet her?" He asked, hoping that the other mother would tell Jewelpelt she was being silly.

Of course they were both his mother. They could share. The stories he had been told about the warrior code made it clear that Darkclan shared with each other. Stonekit opened his mouth to speak again, then paused. A shudder racked his tiny body and instead of speaking, he sneezed.
