Briarpaw was next on the scene, having heard the commotion. Seeing Wolfthroat standing over the mangled and mutilated body of the apprentice stunned the tabby for a moment. Did he do this? It only took her a few seconds to realize that if he had, he would be coated in Sagepaw's blood. There was also a terrible stench that could only belong to the mangy mutts that sometimes bothered them.
Padding over beside Wolfthroat, she dipped her head, muttering out a few words of prayer to StarClan before turning to face him. She chose not to address the untasteful comments, instead trying to think logically in the middle of her slow evolving panic. "Dog? Is it gone?" Her words were shaky, verdant gaze betraying the slight fear for her Clan and the hurt for the death of her fellow apprentice.
"We need to do something with her body." It was not feasible to just leave it out there. She thought of how disrespectful it would be to the dead to have their body eaten, mutilated even more than it already was. They could bury her somewhere - give the Clan a place they could go to say their respects.

His honeyed words reached her heads and it caused her to flick them back, laying them flat on her skull, letting her eyes stay locked on her paws, avoiding his gaze. Briarpaw could feel his head duck to try to make her look at him and she couldn't help but glance up, their eyes meeting for a split second before she turned her head stubbornly away. The anxiety that had been suppressed since she was a kitten was resurfacing now - making her sweat, her heart race, and she felt like she could pass out if she continued this conversation.
Pushing herself to her feet quickly, she turned away from the bengal tom. She would have more courage if she wasn't looking at him. "You're a traitor." Those were the only words she could mutter and they came out at a low, untrusting hiss. It stabbed at her heart for her to say the words to him. But it hurt her even more to think about the fact that she was the reason why. She had to push him away - she couldn't deal with the guilt that would eat her alive to talk to him.

Smiling widely as Sorrelfire accepted her request, she leaned into her chest like a child would to their mother. Her mentor's scent comforted her and she purred loudly, letting the sound radiate to let Sorrel know how happy she was to be back with her. "That's perfect." The brief thought crossed her mind - what if he wasn't okay? What if he was hurt or dead? Briarpaw already had so much guilt clouding her life, she didn't know how she would handle that information.
Leaning away from the deputy, she stood, shaking out her fur. She let the thoughts of the kitten ease away for the moment and she thought of something new - something she had been looking forward to the day she was brought to ShadowClan by Honeycomb and learned of Clan life. "Sorrelfire! I'm going to be a warrior soon! Do you think I'm ready?" Her smile was broad and her eyes were bright with hopefulness. She felt ready - she felt like she was reaching her maximum potential thanks to the wonderful mentor she had.

The apprentice and her mentor were traveling together from ShadowClan for an important mission. Briarpaw had been returned from BloodClan by Caledon and thankfully had suffered minor injuries. She was almost back to new already, despite the ribs that still showed from being underfed and the small wounds that were beginning to heal and scab over. There was a reason she had gotten captured that terrible day - she was trying to rescue a RiverClan kit that she witnessed being taken. While she didn't see said kit at all during her time in the blood-stained concrete city, she thought about him every day and desperately hoped he was alive and well. She knew from his scent that he was a RiverClanner and the thought of him never left, not even when Briarpaw was returned home. One of the things she requested from her mentor and deputy, Sorrelfire, was that they pay a visit to RiverClan and ask about how this kitten was doing. She didn't even know his name.
The tabby and the ShadowClan deputy sat on the border, awaiting a RiverClan patrol to greet them. Briarpaw's tail twitched behind her anxiously while her stomach filled with knots. If this poor kitten wasn't okay she didn't know what she would do with herself.

Listening to his icy words made the hair on her back stand tall and she turned, suddenly heated with anger while he questioned her motives and announced the secret that she had been wanting to keep from him. Her teeth pulled back and her spine arched defensively. The anxiety was gone now, replaced with stubbornness to defend herself. "Are you kidding? You're kidding, right?" Her words were firing out as she let her thoughts about the situation tumble out, not able to stop herself now. "Don't you dare compare what I did with what you did. I was trying to save a life while you were training to take them. You were training with the enemy." Her words were flat, not coupled with a hiss, just blunt and hard and her verdant gaze flamed into his amber one. "And if you really believe that you did the right thing - if that's what you believe - then why did you even come back?" The brown and white tabby's tail lashed behind her and her small body shook with the anger that was taking ahold of her.

Some might have leaned away from the massive tom in fear of him. Instead, Briarpaw appreciated and even welcomed the comforting touch of his head on her shoulder. She slightly leaned into it, not even realize the protectiveness that he held for her. When he bowed in front of Sagepaw's body, she could feel her heart thump harder, hating the sight of the young life lost too soon. Watching Wolfthroat be respectful warmed her heart, thawing the untrusting nature that she was prone to have. Ever since he had been here he had been reliable and patient with the different ways of life than he was used to and most importantly, he defended and watched out for her. It was a nice feeling, the beginnings of trusting another.
"I'll tell Sorrelfire to make an announcement to the Clan," she stated quietly. Turning on her heel to run back to camp, she found her tabby mentor and spoke quickly, "Sorrelfire - there was a dog. I-It killed Sagepaw. Maybe you or Ratstar could make an announcement in the next meeting for everyone to be careful and watch out for it. And also about the loss of Sagepaw so the Clan can mourn."

The brown tabby she-cat padded slowly towards the gathering group. The stopped and took a seat, gazing lovingly up at her mentor, feeling happiness wash over her at the sight of the tabby standing atop the Clan rock.

Hearing her name being called, Briarpaw stood to her paws with excitement, padding up to her mentor. Her heart was beating faster than ever before and she was instantly aware of all the eyes watching her. The thought making her dizzy, the brown and white tabby planted her feet to steady herself, green gaze locked on Sorrelfire for comfort. She nodded once while she said, "I do."

Padding up to the deputy, the brown and white tabby would take a seat, listening and waiting for her turn to request a task. It would be nice to have something to fill her day, even if just for a few hours. The she-cat spoke up, her voice laced with a purr. "I'll take one!" Her tail waved behind her with happiness.

Letting her eyes roll slightly, Briarpaw huffed. He was alluding to something she already knew - the deal he had made with Caledon. Briarpaw would be released if Owlpaw trained under him. This was the thing that was killing her and breaking her heart. He had put himself in the paws of the white devil to save her life. He had betrayed ShadowClan so that she would be safe at home. This was the reason she felt so guilty. This was the reason she needed to push him away.
A thought entered her mind as she was staring into his eyes, listening to his calm and cool voice that, although not angry, was lacking friendliness or emotion. Why would he make that deal? She let her verdant gaze dart to the ground, breaking the angry eye contact. The hair on her neck and back slowly laid down and she searcher her thoughts for the answer to her unspoken question. Maybe he just wanted to train for Caledon. Maybe he just wanted to be a killer and a traitor and get power in BloodClan. The thought burned her chest and stomach as the anger returned.
Suddenly, she wanted to spit the question at him. Fiery words retorted, "I know about your dumb deal. It doesn't change the fact that you took that deal with Caledon to get power and you betrayed ShadowClan to do it." Little did she know, there was another reason - to save her life. Because although she couldn't understand it now, Owlpaw cared about her.

Letting Sorrelfire take the lead, Briarpaw nodded. She listened closely to the deputy's diplomatic tone, noting and filing it in the back of her mind if she ever needed to visit a Clan again. She tried to learn everything she could from her mentor, even the stuff that wasn't exactly taught to her. She gave a polite and warm smile to both Whitepaw and Goldenpaw, wanting them to know that their intentions were to just make sure he was alright.
When Goldenpaw spoke, the apprentice let out a visible sign of relief, releasing the breath she didn't even realize she was holding. Her entire body relaxed and she dipped her head, thankful for the tom's information. "We are glad he is alright." It was like a weight was lifted off of her shoulders. The worry she had for the kitten had been consuming her thoughts. She stored his name away, knowing she would never forget it. Swiftkit. Maybe she would come back moons from now, assuming he was still around and find out his warrior name as well.
Realizing the lack of information given and how confused the two apprentices must be to find two ShadowClanners on their border asking about an injured RiverClan kitten, she figured she would give a brief explanation. "We didn't mean to intrude. I witnessed his capture and I was captured in the process of trying to save him. I'm glad to hear he is home safe." She took on the diplomatic and polite tone she had heard in Sorrelfire's voice a moment ago. Wondering if he would remember her she added, "Will you relay a message for me? Will you tell him that my name is Briarpaw and that I'm sorry I couldn't help him more? Thank you."
