Barn. What a cute name - she would be known as Barnkit later on in WindClan, but she would learn those customs in time. Beaming, Cowspots purred, "What a lovely name. Now, I bet you'd love to get warm back in our camp, yeah? I can also fetch you a fresh mouse if you like once we get there." He imagined with all the excitement, she would be awfully hungry. Also, with how cold the temperatures were getting, he didn't want her catching an illness, though Buzzardflight would probably glance her over to be certain she was healthy when they arrived. His primary concern was making sure she was well-fed and comfortable first, though.

Following the warrior code might be important, but Cowspots also knew how dire the apprentices needed to eat in order to keep providing for the clan. Though she'd tried to be subtle, the black and white warrior caught Smokepaw hidden under a snow pile with her rabbit, eating ravenously. A sympathetic smile spread over his muzzle and the cat walked over to her, calm and not in the least bit angry. "Good catch, Smokepaw. Say, would you mind if I took a leg for my kits to snack on? I bet they'd love to hear the story of how you caught it, too." Blinking soft hazel eyes down at her, Cowspots awaited the response patiently. He knew at the very least Goatkit had an appetite big as a badger, so he'd love it, though Milkykit and Duckkit would leap at the opportunity to indulge in a treat.

A startled yelp distracted Cowspots, who had been nearby the nursery. Blinking and raising his head, he spied Wildseas, reeling back from a bird with a writhing pile of... oh, gross. No wonder the tom was so disturbed. Sympathetic to the situation, the warrior drew closer, feeling his own gut repulse. He certainly wouldn't be eating anytime soon. "I'll find some big leaves so we can limit contact when we dispose of it," murmured Cowspots, "And I'll see if we can find out who brought it back. Perhaps there are more diseased prey in that area to be wary of." The idea made his heart drop. In leaf-bare, they couldn't afford to turn their noses at any piece of prey, but if some were infected with maggots? StarClan, he prayed they would make it through regardless.

Cowspots often resided within the walls of the nursery, today being no exception. Head rising from his nest, his children off playing this afternoon, the tom gazed over at Pep. His Clanmate seemed distressed, upset. He felt guilty seeing it, wondering if anything he could do would help. "Pep, are you feeling alright?" the concern and caring radiated from his expression, black and white pelt shifting as he moved to a sitting position. He wished to be there for someone he considered a friend.

Cowspots mimicked Petalkit's head tilt at Pep's overly-enthusiastic response. Something was off about his friend. Not just the odd scent akin to fear tainting his pelt, but his voice tone and an off look in his eyes... Things like this didn't go unnoticed by the parental cat, considering he used to recognize it in his own reflection. Now he was more used to seeing sadness hidden when his children thought of their mother, no matter how much Dad tried to assure them he loved talking about her (she would always be perfect in his eyes). Laying his tail over Pep's back, Cowspots murmured, "Pep, you're among friends. You can tell us if something's wrong." The warrior might not be old, however, grief had aged him more than he would previously have thought possible.

Familiar words, unfamiliar voice. Ear twitching within the nursery at the high-pitched call to meet given outside, the warrior brushed out of the den, finding a huge grin breaking out over his maw at his line of sight. Little Applekit, leading her clan of apprentices and kits. How cute! He wondered if Goatkit, Milkkit, or Duckkit would feel like joining in, too. Stepping closer, so that he would stand behind Acornpaw, Cowspots piped in, "Your very loyal warrior is here as well." His tail twitched behind him, eager to play along. This all reminded him of why he loved kits so much. They were so carefree, optimistic, and filled to the brim with hopes and dreams. For example, Applekit? He could easily see her being a leader one day with that attitude.

    "No, you can't have them!"

"When will you learn your place, she-cat?"

Raised voices followed by growling and defensive mews breaking from the outside of the nursery had the tom frowning instantly, rising to his paws with a protectiveness he reserved solely for the mothers and kits of the clan. Had someone been insulting his clanmate for being a she-cat? Oh, that would not stand with Cowspots. Paws swiftly carrying him out, he identified Petalkit and Diamondpaw instantly coming to Mousenose's aid. Taking charge, he ordered, "Diamondpaw, please get Petalkit back. This tom isn't safe." Not to mention if things kept up the way they were, violence would certainly not be out of the question. A dark glare swinging towards Coyote, the warrior arched his back to look bigger and stepped up beside Mousenose. "Now, who do you think you are? You're in the heart of WindClan territory, not to mention verbally attacking one of our kind, beloved queens. That is very much against our code, so if you intend to continue this way, I must ask you to leave," rumbled Cowspots, deadly calm. Under his tone lay an angry promise, claws seeping from his paws to dig into the earth. Violence was not the answer unless there was no other option, but this situation was quite abnormal.

Patrolling the territory wasn't uncommon for the warrior, always looking out for WindClan's best interests. He roamed the moors, head aiming him onward while he picked up closer to his far borders. A squeak had caught his attention, however, causing him to pause and glance to his right. A hunting warrior perhaps? He hadn't thought any patrols were in the area. With a light frown, Cowspots veered in the direction of the noise, picking up pace ever so slightly and noted a fawn tom making a quick getaway reeking of fresh kill. "Hold on," barked the ebony and white tom, rushing to get ahead of Cougar and stop him, "That's WindClan's prey; I can't let you leave with that." This stranger smelled vaguely of a fellow clan, though he couldn't identify which due to the faintness, but he doubted the leader of said clan would be too eager to hear of their Clanmates hunting on others' land.

The call of anyone besides Jasperstar felt hard to hear, almost false. Though the words were familiar, as the circumstances, everything moved slowly, similar to how it had after Heathercloud's death. This grief hung more obviously around them. Jasperstar had been much beloved by his clan, including Cowspots. While the warrior wasn't blind to his former leader's recent actions, he'd respected and followed the tom loyally for moons. There had been no one he trusted more with his life, and yet now he was gone - dead - and Eaglespirit rose to lead them through the ashes left in his wake.

Cowspots's head lifted among his Clanmates, eyes leveling with Eaglespirit. He agreed; the tom had been the closest thing WindClan had to a deputy since Ironclaw stepped down, so it made sense for him to become their new leader. Judging by the lack of clouds in the sky, StarClan agreed as well. Managing a feeble smile, he rumbled out, "You'll have my full support as well. May StarClan light the path of Jasperstar, and may they grant you a long, healthy leadership." His words fell softly among the crowd, yet loud enough to be heard clearly. It was no secret Cowspots had loved Jasperstar dearly as a friend, and coming to terms with his passing would be a long and difficult road. But WindClan would become strong again under the light of their new leader. Eaglestar would bright them into a lovely future.

His expression changed instantly when Cougar mentioned kits, flinching at the harshness behind the words. This cat's family had perished because of hunger? Mind veering unintentionally to Heathercloud, he knew what she would say - what she would do. He would do anything for his own son and daughters, even starve himself if it meant they would live. Therefore, he could sympathize and he shifted to stop Cougar as he moved to leave. "Wait," Cowspots bit his lip, fidgeting a little, "If you have a starving family, you could have just asked. WindClan is a family clan; we protect others, and we'd be happy to protect your family. Please, come with me to camp and meet my leader. I'm sure we can work something out." Cats couldn't just go around hunting on other clans' territories without permission. But if Eaglestar gave the go-ahead, which the warrior hoped he would, then Cougar wouldn't have to worry about his family. Leaf-bare might be difficult and stressful for everyone as is, yet Cowspots liked to think they had a rabbit to spare each day. The tom wouldn't be able to live with himself if he knew he was allowing another cat's family to starve.

Sleep wasn't always easiest to come by, having grown used to sleeping with his kits at his belly in the nursery. Moving back to the warriors' den when they'd grown to be apprentices was hard, but Cowspots was managing. He kept close to his friends, fidgeted in his sleep, missing their warmth and the feeling of keeping them safe. When the sun began peeking through the roof overhead, he stirred as though he'd slept lightly. However, an unearthly moan caused him to wake more quickly than normal, eyes widening as the sky overhead began to cave in and collapse into the den. He gasped, leaping out of the way though still finding his fur splashed with snow. Shaking off the cold feeling, the warrior glanced to Wolfsbane, offering a quick, "I'm fine," before feeling his gut wrench for his best friends, needing to know they were safe with a ferocity he hadn't quite expected. "Morningfrost? Ivynose? Are you safe?"

Cowspots exhaled, feeling his heart go out to another father. Flicking his tail, the black and white feline invited, "Come on, it's this way. Eaglestar is a just leader. He will hear your side." Picking up the rabbit, for it wouldn't go over well to see a stranger holding WindClan prey, he began to head back towards their camp. After taking a few steps, he glanced back, making sure the fawn tom was following. Cougar seemed wary, not particularly trusting. The cat supposed he couldn't blame him. If his family had perished due to the lack of kindness from neighbors, Cowspots would probably be in the same mentality.

ooc: shall we open this, or do we just want to tag Eaglestar and keep it a small thread?

There were many things Cowspots missed about the nursery. First and foremost was sleeping next to his children every night, holding them and knowing they were safe under his protective paws. But almost as much as he missed that, he missed the queens. They'd become close friends of his, finding great amount in common with them. He wasn't the only single parent, so they helped each other out and loved all the kits together. He would laugh with them and cheer them up, and they would lean on one another for support. Even though he had to take breaks to go on patrols since he wasn't a she-cat, Cowspots made sure to bring back extra prey to share with them, wanting to make sure they had plenty to eat in these trying times.

Lately things had been particularly difficult. Blossomkit still grieved the disappearance of her sibling Chillykit. Frostfall's love life was crumbling at the seams, desperate for love and no one offering. She deserved a wonderful mate, someone who would give her kits and take her mind off the children who'd already left. His heart shattered for her. Finally, there was Mousenose, whose child had been stolen from under her nose. The sweet, timid she-cat was easily the most needing of love and support, though that didn't mean the others didn't need it as well. They all needed a friendly face to bring them back up, help them out in their time of need. They were his close friends, he felt, and Cowspots wouldn't let them go without someone backing them up. A rabbit from an earlier patrol in his jaws, the warrior parted the nursery vines to slip in, glancing towards the queens with a soft smile. Laying the food down, he mused kindly, "I thought you'd like some company with your meal today. I've missed spending nights talking with you." It was true. Their company was the entire reason he'd managed to survive after the death of Heathercloud.
