Asterpaw thought about his missing siblings a lot. Of the three that had seemingly vanished out of thin air, he had been particularly close to Sprucekit, a rather airheaded but kind sister. For a moon or so after she had gone missing, along with Snowkit and Kestrelkit, he had held hope that she was still alive and would find her way back to them. After a while, though, this proved to be too impossible of a task, and he gave up hope. His siblings were most likely dead, and he'd never see them again. The queens had attempted to console him, had told him (unhelpfully) that not every kit survived the winter and that he was fortunate to still be alive, and eventually the dread and grief had dimmed into a hardly noticeable pit in his chest, only flaring up when he was feeling particularly lonely.

However, when Asterpaw found himself on the border of his beloved Clan, facing a stranger, he found a sense of familiarity deep within his gut. The pit flared up, and he stood there for a moment. What could he do? Who was this? The black and white apprentice sucked in a deep breath before gesturing to his ears, his standard greeting to a stranger to show that he was deaf. He then tilted his head to the side, trying to ask her what she needed here.

Asterpaw’s face fell when Birdkit shook her head. But... He was supposed to take her home where she belonged! He didn’t know about why she was here, but he didn’t care. They needed her back. Turning to Jeminai, with a face full of genuine sadness, he nodded vigorously. He turned back to Birdkit, tapping the space next to him, trying to get her to come back. To him. To them.

Asterpaw had shown up to the meeting after being nudged forward by a warrior, expecting it to be an average meeting. Apprentice ceremonies, warrior ceremonies, maybe a few announcements. The mention of patrols made him sad-- Poor Birdkit, still stuck in ShadowClan, away from her true family. He nodded when Lilystar looked to him to confirm, and then continued on waiting through the announcements. It was the medicine cat apprentice announcements that got to him. Hollowpaw was surely the one to be chosen, and he turned to try and offer her his congratulations when--

    He was called as well.

His heart stopped in his chest, and he gulped. Him? He had always had an interest in the position, but now that he was receiving it, he couldn't help but think this must be wrong. It had to be wrong. Two medicine cat apprentices? And one who couldn't hear? Surely, Hollowpaw must feel cheated out of her position, having to share it. Amberpaw's clear distaste only served to jostle Asterpaw's nerves more, and he gulped again before looking up at Lilystar. He gave a nod in response, accepting it but still feeling dizzy from this all.

Asterpaw was first alerted to the situation when the NPC warrior had slunk into the medicine cat's den. To be honest, he was still having his reserves about all this-- How could StarClan have appointed him as a medicine cat apprentice? Surely Hollowpaw was the true fit for this? He had always been interested in herbs, and knew he never would have been able to be a good warrior, but still. StarClan had made a mistake before, putting him into a female's body, who was to say they weren't doing the same now? But all the same, he treated the injured warrior's wounds and then set off once he realized it was Silentpaw who had done it.

Perhaps if Asterpaw knew it was his fault that Silentpaw had lashed out and was now leaving, he would have stayed out of it. But he did not. So he soon arrived where Obsidianstorm was standing with his littermate, and with large, concerned blue eyes, he tried to ask what was wrong with a tilt of his head.

Asterpaw had been unable to sleep that night. Worried thoughts swirled inside his head, threatening to swallow the young medicine cat apprentice whole. What if StarClan had made another mistake in regards to him? They had admitted that him being born in a queen's body was a mistake before. Surely Hollowpaw was much more deserving of the role then he was-- Despite his interest in herbs, and deep down knowing that he would have never been as successful as a warrior as his peers were, Hollowpaw knew what she was doing way more than he did. And... Did StarClan pick two apprentices because he couldn't do it? Because his deafness meant he'd be too hard to train, and that he wasn't good enough to do it on his own? Not to mention Silentpaw seemed upset at him, and others like Cinderpaw and Ruepaw had wanted that position too...

These thoughts continued to manifest bitterly as he stepped outside of his new den, the one that Dusksparks had made his home in, and now housed his two apprentices. He could feel eyes following him as he went to the prey pile to grab breakfast-- Some were full of pity. Some spiteful that their future medicine cats was a deaf, mute kid and a three-legged stranger. He settled off to the side, suddenly feeling much more alienated from his Clan than usual.
