OOC: Hi! I'm just going to start/continue where you left off, and if you have any issues with the character please let me know and I can adjust accordingly!

    BEGIN

Kevin kicked what was left of a rusty aluminum can. "Friggin' zombies," he muttered. It had been days since they had last seen other survivors, and he was getting anxious. He and his two friends were not going to last long if they couldn't find a larger, well-equipped group. The trio had already begun to worry about supplies, and the zombies had kept them from raiding the last convenience store they had found. "Hey, Rory." Kevin looked over at his close friend. "How much water do you have left? I've still got a bottle and a half," he said to the other boy. "I have one, but Iris has two more. We should get more as soon as we can," Rory responded.

Rory was among Kevin's closest friends, even before all hell broke loose. They met at new-student orientation, and it was Rory's flirtatious teasing that sparked Kevin's interest. The two became fast friends - and maybe even a little more than just friends. After a few weeks of dating, they decided they worked best as friends, and broke up. If anything, they became closer because of it. Kevin and Rory loved each other, but it wasn't romantic love. They loved each other as friends - really, really close friends.

"Definitely. Any idea where we can look?" Kevin asked. "There should be a 7/11 up ahead," Iris answered. Kevin nodded, and looked in the direction she pointed. It looked like a fairly easy trek, no zombies in sight and only a few piles of debris to climb over. "We should get moving," Iris said as she slung her crowbar over her shoulder.

Rory lifted his hand. "Wait, I see someone. Could be a couple walking corpses." Kevin's hand rested on the thin pipe hooked to his belt-loop. "Hang on, they aren't staggering around. They might be alive, but that doesn't necessarily mean friendly." "Rory, Kevin, be ready for anything. It looks like the female is running over here," Iris said in a low voice.

"Hey, who are you?" asked the girl who had sprinted up to them. Her friend ran up behind her. Kevin looked over at him, and had to keep his jaw from dropping. That guy was hot. Damn. Kevin looked away quickly so it wouldn't appear as if he were staring. He didn't want to give a first impression of a creep.

"Well, anyways. Ignoring the fact that both of you could potentially be thieves or attempt to kill us. I'm Hazel and this is Luken," said the girl. Here smile was a striking contrast to the gloom around them. The boy looked up at them. "We haven't actually seen other living people in weeks." The girl, Hazel, nodded. Iris was the one to respond. "I'm Iris. We haven't seem people in a while either, so its nice to have some human contact." Hazel smiled. "It's nice to see someone who isn't going to murder us." Kevin smirked with appreciation for the remark.

"We need to get out of here. They're coming," Hazel said. Kevin nodded. "We were just about to hit up a 7/11 and get out of here. Wanna come with?" he asked. He really hoped they would come, especially the cute guy, Luken. 'Luken', what a sexy name. "My name's Kevin, and that numb-skull is Rory," he said, looking into Luken's eyes. "A-hole!" Rory replied, a half-smile creeping onto his face.

OOC: Aaah! That was long! Please don't expect anything quite like that during the week... btw, if you accept me/we continue with this, you should know that I'm on Asian time, so most likely my nights are your days, and your nights are my days. This might make my responses... not immediate. I hope that won't be a biggie?

Edit: Wow, that picture is huge. My bad. Also, do you want me to find pics for Rory and Iris, or do you want to? Did you have anyone in mind for Iris?

Edit 2.0: Added extra spacing between paragraphs, because apparently my indentations didn't work. Lesson learned: use the preview button.

Edit 3.0: Missed one. Damn, I am a mess.

    OOC: Great! :)

    BEGIN

Everyone agreed to head over to the 7/11, so they set out quickly. It became pretty obvious that the girl, Hazel, would be doing most of the talking. Luken was probably pretty traumatized about the whole zombie apocalypse thing. Kevin didn't blame him. It took him a while to get over the deaths of his family, even though he didn't care much for them in the first place. He couldn't imagine how it would've been if he had really loved his family.

Rory walked up to Kevin. "Dude, that guy's cute. If you don't nab him, I will," he teased. "God, Rory, is that all you can think about? It's the friggin' apocalypse," Kevin responded, dramatically rolling his eyes. "Besides, I kind of thought the girl would be more your type." "Damn right she is. I'll leave him alone then, since it bothers you so much," Rory said with a smile.

Just then Hazel walked up to them. "Hey, where're you guys from?" she asked, with her bright smile. "I'm originally from Indiana, but I moved here for uni. Kevin's from Raleigh, and he moved here for the same reason," Rory answered. Before he could ask her the same question, they arrived at the store. Hazel suggested they split up into two groups, guys and girls. Iris was in agreement. "Hazel and I will take the back, you guys take the front. Keep an eye out for any of the dead outside." Rory saluted her with a goofy smile, and the two girls headed to the back. "Clear!" Iris shouted back.

The guys moved in, and started grabbing what they could. It seemed relatively untouched. "Try to grab any unperishables, and keep an eye out for water and medicine. Rory, check under the cashier for a first-aid kit," Kevin instructed. Rory did as he was told, and lifted up a red bag. "Beautiful," he exclaimed. He opened it up and let out a long, despairing sigh. "It's empty, Kevin. Someone stopped by before we did." "That's fine, we can still use the bag. Give it to Luken," Kevin said, looking over at the quiet boy. "Luken, you can fill it up with water from the cooler. It seems like there are a few bottles left. Toss me some Mountain Dew too. Probably isn't the wisest decision, but I never could pass it up." Kevin continued to fill his backpack with what food he could find. "Hey, by the way, where you from? Your name, it's unique."

Rory looked over at the two boys. "Oh, really? I'm from Indiana too!" he exclaimed. Kevin nodded. "Do you speak German?" he asked. "I wish I was fluent in a language other than English. Would have been very helpful. I did learn some Chinese from friends. Not that it matters now, I guess. Not very likely to end up around Chinese people now." Kevin smiled at his own joke. "Well, it's nice to meet you Luka."

"Hey Rory! Do you think that you could help me reach these water bottles up top?" Hazel called out. Rory grinned and walked over to help her. He easily reached the bottles, and made sure to flex his muscles a little as he was taking the pack of bottles down. "Here you go, beautiful," he said as the last bottle was reached. He had never been very subtle with his advances. "Need anything else?" he asked. She just looked away and called for the others to finished up.

Kevin watched Luka drop the bottle out of the corner of his eye. "Hey, are you okay?" he asked, reaching out to put one hand on the other boy's shoulder. He didn't even stop to think about the signals the action might give. He looked towards the back and answered Hazel's call, "Yeah, you're right. We should move on, find a place to stay and rest. Iris, are you finished?" "My bag's full. Let's get out of here and see what we got," she answered. The group started to leave, but Kevin stopped them at the door.

"Shit, there's someone out there. He looks like a dead one. Oh shit, there's another," he whispered. "Damn it," Iris whispered. "Alright, Rory and I will take the side that they're on. We move slowly, and quietly. Do not engage if they don't notice us. Head to the left."

    Edit: grammar

Kevin walked next to Rory. He noticed that when he didn't feel safe, he was quick to turn to Rory for comfort. Rory had that effect; he was calm, protective, and always made the situation feel lighter. Rory noticed Kevin's closeness, and put an arm around his shoulders. "You okay?" he asked, with genuine concern. "Yeah, just tired of this mess. Those things, they were people once. People with lives, loved ones... and now not only are they dead, they've become monsters. It's just... hard to think about," Kevin replied. Rory tousled the boy's hair. "We'll get through this, Kev. You and I, we've made it through plenty of hardships together. We'll get through this one too," he assured him. "Thanks, Rory," Kevin sighed.

"We should find a place to stop soon," Hazel suggested. Iris pulled her over to discuss the city's layout and pick a good place to sleep for the night. Rory and Kevin had stumbled upon Iris a few days prior. They had literally stumbled over her. She was lying down hiding from a small family of zombies and Kevin tripped over her. She almost had his head, because they had to fight off the zombies that his shout of surprise had attracted. Thankfully, she had realized that she needed them, even though she probably could have killed them both. She was as tough as nails, and was a natural leader. Kevin was grateful for her and her ability to keep the group together.

Kevin looked over at Luken. "Luka, were you going to uni here?" he asked. "How old are you, anyways?"

OOC: Where is "here" anyways? Did you have a city in mind?

OOC: Okay, finally!! Sorry for taking so long. For some reason, all of today I wasn't able to type in my response. It just decided to work now, so hear it is? haha Once again, sorry about all this. Hopefully it doesn't happen again... As for the location of the story, what about Chicago? Reasonably close to Indiana, major city.

    BEGIN

“Notre Dame? Nice,” Kevin said. Rory nodded in agreement and removed his arm from Kevin’s shoulders. Iris and Hazel waved the boys over and pointed at the building that would be their camp for the night. The group started moving towards it, when Luken asked Kevin what they did before everything happened.

“The two of us were juniors at U-Chicago. Before it all went down. The campus is pretty much gone… too many people in one place, I guess. I’m a year older than you, and Rory’s a year older than me. I was studying Political Science with a minor in Gender and Sexuality Studies. Rory was studying music.” Kevin replied to Luken’s question. Rory looked over at Luken. “I wanted to write music, as a songwriter. It wasn’t really something that’s helpful now, though. What did you study, or had you decided?” he asked.

As they were talking, the group arrived at the building, although ruins were a better description. It never ceased to amaze Kevin how quickly the world had deteriorated without the proper care it needed. The building wasn’t as bad as what he had seen elsewhere; Iris and Hazel chose well. The group started to find places to lie down for the evening. Kevin found a long couch that only had a few tears, and he laid his backpack down. Iris started breaking up a chair to light on fire to keep warm. Rory began to block up the windows, for protection and to hide the light of the fire. Conveniently, the ceiling had enough holes to vent the smoke. They were lucky this time. “Kevin, got a match?” Iris asked. He tossed her his pack of matches and she lit the pile of wood on fire. “Thankfully smoke doesn’t seem to bother the dead,” she commented. It was assumed that with all of the burning and smoke that already existed, more smoke didn't make enough difference in the eyes, or noses, of the dead.

The group gathered around in a circle and watched the fire. Iris started doling out food. Crackers, chips, and water. The group had avoided meats when scavenging, for fear of spoilage and attracting zombies. Kevin tilted his head towards Luken. “What was it you said you were studying?” he asked.

"Iris, why don't you sleep tonight? You took the longest shift last night," Kevin suggested. Iris nodded. "If it is alright with Rory and Hazel," she said. She set her crowbar down next to her and curled up against the wall. "Someone else can take the couch. I'm used to sleeping like this anyways." Rory climbed onto the couch and huddled into one corner, leaving enough room on the other side for Hazel if she was comfortable sleeping on the other end. "Night, Kev. Don't die on me," he said. "I'll do my best," Kevin replied. It wasn't long before Rory's breathing slowed, and a peaceful slumber drifted over his body.

Kevin watched the fire dance. "Never would have thought..." he started. He didn't finish his sentence, and instead drifted into thoughts of his family and friends. His parents were strict and religious, a pairing of traits that created a strenuous relationship between Kevin and his parents. When he was a child he did everything he could to win his parents favor, and he was a perfect child. He did everything he was told, and he didn't talk back when his parents scolded him. However, the older he became, the more aware he was of his own opinions and ability to state them. He fought more and more often with his parents, especially when he came out as gay. They believed it was sinful, but he knew it couldn't be. When he dated, he dated secretly, and he only told a few people about his sexuality. When he graduated and went to college, he finally was able to be who he wanted to be. Only a few years later and here he was, sitting in front of a fire, desperate for survival.

Kevin looked over at Luken after a few minutes of thoughtful silence. "Did you have a family?" he asked. "No, wait, sorry, that's personal." He looked back at the fire, hoping he didn't dredge up any bad memories.
