Elliott blinked groggily in the early morning light, stepping out from his den and taking a moment to breathe in the fresh air. The crisp breeze carried tantalizing smells that roused him from his sleepy state. He figured it best to start hunting so his belly was full and warm.
~~~~~
Delta yawned and stretched her limbs, preparing herself for the first hunt of the day. She contemplated looking near the river, and made her way in that direction. Her ears swiveled this way and that as she listened intently for the sounds of small prey scurrying among the undergrowth. The morning sun above her dappled the ground in golden light, and a slight chill in the breeze sent a shiver up her spine.
-
After a while of walking, Delta caught sight of a mouse digging at the roots of an oak and quickly dropped low to the forest floor, her belly just inches away from the layer of dried leaves underneath her. It would be impossible to creep up silently on the mouse, so after a moment's hesitation she hastily pounced at the mouse.It slipped from her paws, but she quickly scooped it up and threw it into the air, stunning it long enough for her to sink her teeth into it and kill it quickly. As she chewed contentedly, the sound of cats meowing in the distance made her freeze. She could hear the sound of the river not far from her.
-
Delta finished her mouse hurriedly, bounding away from the voices of the cats. She headed south back in the direction of her den, her tail streaming out behind her. She padded close to the river's edge for a while, admiring the pretty stones that littered its banks before she broke away and trailed deeper into the forest.
Zephyr grazed quietly and contentedly with her herd, the young mare watching as two foals played in the water. She lowered her nose back to the grass, her tail swishing.
Atlas snorted in annoyance, shaking his black mane in a futile attempt to rid himself of flies. The timid stallion had been trailing a herd for just a few days now, but he knew a band of bachelors was in pursuit as well. He stomped his hoof, frustrated, and decided to graze thoughtfully.
(Sorry for the short and choppy post, on mobile)
-
Atlas could definitely smell more bachelors now, and his heart beat faster in his chest. Indecisively, he paced back and forth, watching the herd graze undisturbed. He could see the two stallions of the herd, who were much more massive and powerful looking than he. Puffing out his chest and flaring his nostrils, the black stallion inched closer to the herd, attempting to remain out of sight as he lingered nearby.
Zephyr's whiskers twitched as she ceased from her grazing and made her way casually to the river bank, dipping her nose into the shallow waters for a quick drink. The blue roan's pelt itched with fly bites that were made worse by the sun's heat, and the cold water was soothing on her dry throat.
-
Zephyr opened her mouth to reply to Athena, when the herd suddenly became distressed. She could see a stallion barreling his way closer to the herd. She squealed, snorting out through her nostrils and pacing anxiously around the other yearling.
(next post will be longer, storm creating power outages!)
-
Atlas could see now that the other bachelors had already begun to divide up the mares. Snorting, he loped down the hillside, circling around the throng of horses and watching for a way to sneak in. His tail flagged out behind him as he trotted excitedly, nostrils flared and ears pricked.
Zephyr spun around, panic rising in her chest as her herd was thrown into chaos. The young yearling danced in place, her tail twitching in anticipation. The bachelors were chasing down the mares, while she noticed the lieutenant stallion was doing his best to protect them.
-
Zephyr stuck close to the Athena, swinging around to angle her hips at the stallion that cornered them. She wouldn't go without a fight. Her ears pinned at the tip and she did her best to look menacing, baring her teeth and shaking her head furiously. However the stallion was huge and she was shoved in the same direction as Athena. "Athena, are you alright?" she nickered, her flanks heaving.
Atlas snorted, weaving in and out of the spooked mares. He did his best to avoid the flailing hooves and powerful bites from the crazed horses, swinging his head around to search for a mare that was left untouched. He doubted he would be able to take on the other bachelors. (Sorry, internet's slow today so posts will suck)
-
Atlas spotted a palomino stallion sneaking away from the chaos with three mares in tow. He was strong looking, but with all of the other bachelors causing a ruckus he was sure he could manage to steal one of those mares. Atlas cantered in their direction, keeping a close eye on the stallion and skirting around him as he decided the best way to continue. He eyed the mares thoroughly, contemplating which one to snag.
-
Zephyr nickered in response to Athena. At least through all of this she would have the young mare with her, which curbed her intense fear. She pinned her ears at the stallion's commands but loped in the direction he shoved her, casting one last mournful glance at her herd. At this point, there was not much she could do but obey and avoid hurting herself, Athena, or Luna. With a heavy heart, she galloped away, making sure the other blue roan was close behind.
Atlas spotted the appaloosa mare right away and closed in on her, trumpeting loudly and snaking his head towards her. He pranced impatiently, flagging his tail and bobbing his head in an effort to persuade her away from the palomino.
-
Atlas snorted, squaring his chest and taking a few daring steps towards the other stallion. He craned his neck to examine the palomino, stomping his hoof and swaying his hips as he decided whether to throw the first kick. Atlas flattened his ears and curled his upper lip, attempting to slip between the palomino to cut away the appaloosa mare.
