Nova looked over at Dena as she walked up to ask when they were leaving and woofed in response “Right now.” The she-wolf began to walk out of the camp, glancing back to make sure her patrol was following, and immediately began to scent the air and listen for any sign of prey. Soon a faint scent of deer reached her nose and she decided this would be a good teaching moment for the two younger wolves in the patrol. “Dena, Specks, see if you can tell me what that scent is.” She woofed, looking at them as she awaited their response.

Nova nodded in agreement. “Yes, that’s right. Now can either of you tell me what the easiest for us to hunt this deer is? Keep in mind the fog will make it harder to see.” Nova loved teaching so she took any opportunity to share her knowledge with the younger members of the pack, and the fog made this a great opportunity. One day these two might be asked to lead their own hunting patrol, so it was important that they knew the best ways to hunt in any given situation.

“Yes, but you have to remember that deer are bigger than us so it’s not as easy to just walk up and pounce like you would for a rabbit or bird. And if it’s a buck that could get you hurt. That’s why we work in a team for bigger prey.” Just as the she-wolf finished her response the scent of Avi and Eagle’s Talon hit her nose, along with... a loner? Nova turned to look in the direction the scent was coming from and spotted the trio. She padded over to them and said, mainly to Eagle, “Looks like you have some company.” She looked the new wolf up and down before speaking to him. “And who might you be?” As she spoke to him her stance clearly showed she was the more dominant one as if she were challenging the loner to give her trouble. Though the black coated beta wasn’t necessarily hostile to intruders, unless of course they gave her a reason to be, she definitely wasn’t fond of them.

Nova nodded as her fellow beta finished telling her what happened. She looked over at Avi long enough to sternly say “We’ll talk about your actions later.” before turning to listen to the loner’s story. The black she-wolf always listened to both sides of the story, especially when it came to intruders. After all, who was she to stop a wolf from joining their pack? Though, ultimately it would be up to the Alphas to decide what to do. “So, what were you doing here it the first place? Were you hoping to join our pack or just steal our prey?” She woofed to Amadeus.

Nova looked over and nodded at Eagle’s Talon before padding back over to her patrol. “Let’s go.” She woofed as she began to walk in the direction of the deer. “Specks, you need the practice. When we get closer to the deer why don’t you tell us how we should work together to catch it?” The black she-wolf hoped she wasn’t putting too much pressure on the young wolf but this was the best way she knew of to teach a wolf to lead a patrol. He had to learn to think of the best way to do something which required knowing his packmates strengths and weaknesses well enough to put them in the position to help the patrol succeed in the hunt. It was a hard thing to do, but you only get better with practice. Besides, this time she would correct his mistakes, if needed, and tell him how to improve before they attempt to bring down the deer.
