Windy thought it wasn't fair that he and his siblings were prohibited from going outside. I could fight off those rats easily, he thought proudly, imagining himself killing a rat with one swipe of his big, tawny paw. He was perhaps the largest in the litter, despite being the youngest. He may have been the runt, but he didn't look it, with a rather muscular body already developing. Wind Runner was growing fast.

His thoughts were interrupted by his uncle, Sun. He brought with him a precious ball of moss, filled with water. Immediately, he began lapping at the moss, trying to get the most before his siblings started drinking too. A content sigh escaped his small mouth as he felt the cold liquid in his mouth, soothing his throat. His large, tufted ears pricked as his mother spoke of Moon. Yeah, where is Father? the kitten wondered, though he wasn't too concerned. He didn't yet understand the concept of death and danger.

"I can go and look for him," the young wildcat offered, sitting up. "I'm big and strong and brave." His traits were already developing fast, and it was evident he was going to grow to be proud and rather cocky.

"Hey! I could! I can track him down, even in the snow!" the caracal kitten protested, flattening his ears before continuing to drink. Wind Runner paused, glancing sideways at his sister Feather Step. "Alright," he grunted, sitting back and licking the droplets from his lips. Despite his rather arrogant personality, he loved his family very much, and his love for each of them was unconditional—even when they annoyed him.

"I'm just trying to be helpful!" he retorted hotly, curved black ears flattening against his tawny head. Did any of his siblings like him? Did his parents? He honestly wasn't certain. He tried to be nice. But most things that came out of his mouth were interpreted to be self-centred, unbeknownst to him.
He parted his jaws slightly to allow an agitated sigh out before curling up in the nest, burying his head under his leg.

"Outside!" Wind breathed excitedly, zooming out of the barn. He came to a skidding halt as the harsh sunlight clouded his vision, and he squinted, trying to adjust to this new light. It was brighter outside than in the barn. But he liked it.
He curiously sniffed around the area, darting from bush to bush. So many new scents, it was hard for his little nose to comprehend! "It's amazing out here!"

A new scent caught his attention. Blood...? He looked up, fur on end. And there was his father's figure, bloodied and battered. "Whoa, what happened? Did you get in a fight, Dad? Did you win?" the kitten asked, bounding to Moon's side. As he collapsed, he glanced up at Spring. "Mum? Why is Dad lying on the ground?" And for the first time, he felt a twinge of worry inside.
