    despite not recognizing the voice, she recognized the shadowclan scent, along with the sweet scent of herbs, that clung to the younger female like a second fur. she smiled at the apprentice, nodding. "yes, just a few days ago. thebe, pleasure to meet who i assume might be one of the medicinal ranks?" she inquired, head tilting, curiosity written on her expression.

    at the tom's harsh words, the felines brows furrowed. she didn't flinch, she didn't snap back. instead, she turned her head to him, quirking a brow. "shouldn't you be doing something other than gossiping like a queen? this is my job, and i'm doing it. you do yours and it'll all be swell and grand." she said, tone emotionless as she shrugged a shoulder.

    perhaps he could sort of unofficially mentor thebe? she needs someone who's going to be hard on her to teach her to fight

    "poke the bear and expect it to bite." she replied without hesitation to the latest to arrive, though didn't bother turning her gaze to face him. it wasn't as though she'd see him anyway. "thebe. and maybe this senior warrior should figure out what others orders are before he tries to give some of his own." she replied, tone cool and like steel, not rude but certainly lacking friendliness.

    she had to swallow the sickening bile growing inher throat. thebe was so tired of the scent of death, she'd smelt enough as a loner. she didn't see, but she could smell. smell the stench from across the camp.

    she approached the situation with hesitance. she'd never actually met the leader, only ever known twoface. he'd accepted her into the clan, he'd encouraged her to not give up and flop down and call herself a useless elder, in spite of her age. so, naturally, she gravitated towards the tom.

    "well, you'll make a good leader. i'm sure she trained you well." she told the tom in an attempt at a reassurance, giving him a sympathetic smile. "the handsomest leader in all the clans, my friend." she offered, recalling one of their earliest interactions.

    and thebe could adopt her? she likes kits since they usually don't realize how self conscious she is about her blindness, plus she totally gets emotionally abusive parents

    perhaps thebe wasn't some pillar of emotional strength. sometimes, self depricating jokes had no place, and in those times, she felt she had little to contribute. she didn't know most of these cats, she didn't know their stories or their issues. she really only knew one thing about most of them, but sight-shaming had it's uses.

    "i can't hunt, kid," she announced. trying force some degree of sass into her tone as she watched blindly, edging closer, wary for kits and tails that might stray onto her path. "i can't fight, either. i can't see. but i take all og these failures, and i say screw the system and try to become a warrior anyway. you know why? because i love it. kid, you wouldn't be a medicine cat if you didn't love it. you'd have brcome a warrior or a den mother or something. but you became a medicine cat apprentice, anf you need to take any perceived failures and learn from them. and move on. give regular check ups, watch twoface, learn from it, and apply it going forward." she tried to be encouraging, tried to maoe the feline see the good, but she'd always had an issue with rambling and she'd never come across as very... rallying. but she didn't stop trying, not with twoface and not with this one, one of the few nice ones to her.

    unable to stop herself from a self depricating joke, she tried to give an encouraging smile, as though it could fix all the problems in the world. "besides, if that rank opens up, you know they're gonna try to stick the girl with the perfect nose into it and kill any dreamd of being a warrior. for my sake, stick around until i find a use."

    the silence made the hairs on the back of the felines neck stand up, the confusion visible on her features. she hesitated, jaw opening to inquire if he was still there when he finally spoke. and, unlike his response, her own was immediate and rather sharp.

    "no." she said immediately, lips pressed tightly into a frown as she regarded him, looking a mixture of offended and wounded. "no, twoface, don't try the whole different thing. i'm blind, not some sort of special snow flake. don't... don't say it doesn't define me, because it does. because i want it to.

    "do you know how many people laughed at me when i was coming here, saying i'd be the blind warrior of shadowclan? they thought i was a joke. but i didn't make it here in spite of my blindness, i made it here because of it. it defines me, but i want it to. i'm not going to shy away from my blindness because it's a part of my identity, because i would be unrecognizably different without it. i'm not normal - i'm so, so different because of it, in good and bad ways. it makes me a freak, and i'm embracing it.

    "own the words and they can't be insults." she declared, shrugging her shoulders. she'd been told plenty of things, plenty of times in the past fourteen moons. and she'd learned to filter anything said to or about her. she'd developed a thick skin - or at least some semblance of it. granted, anyone who paid attention to her self-depricating jokes could see how self conscious she was, but it was easier to put up a strong front. easier to break in the silence, alone.

    she was a bit shocked at the amount of strangers defending her, and it was apparent by the way her brows seemed to recede at each and every comment made in her favor. she wasn't used to others caring, on any level. one thebe, none... other dude, she thought to herself, realizing she hadn't actually processed the strangers name. had anyone said it? she should have been listening more closely.

    twoface, yet another who she liked very much, approached and argued in her favor once more. she smiled at him, delighted by what felt like consistent kindness from her first clan-friend. and thankfulness, for he'd said the toms name and she'd committed it to memory. nodding, she cleared her throat. of course, a question was the first thing to escape her lips, curious and an automatic, and inevitably doomed to fail, attempt at lightening the situation and the tension crackling in the air like a whip.

    "what's mossball? is that like... a food?" she inquired, genuine confusion and curiosity on her features.

    though the sight might have been strange to some, it was a stranger thing to hear. she knew vaguely of littlenewt, considering he was the other blind warrior in the clan, but she hadn't any chances to personally know the tom.

    when she woke up to screaming, the feline immediately rolled onto her paws. she was a petite, thin little thing, off white fur carefully groomed down at all tomes, but it stood on end and all but tripled her size, wide brown eyes watching wild and blind. "whatsgoingon?" she hollered, bracing herself for someone to attack. she still wasn't familiar with each clan members smell and found herself dizzied as she tried to sort it out and detect a threat - unaware it being only littlenewt and his bird.

    she'd spent the entire morning hunting. and, for the first time ever, she'd caught something.

    the kill was a clan one, the mouse small but fat, a good meal. she'd spent hours tracking, with two failed attempts, but she'd caught. one thing she hadn't quite realized, in the midst of pessimism and negativity, was that she was capable of tracking the same exact mouse all through the forest - and she wasn't about to let him escape the wrath of thebe.

    she dropped the body onto the freshkill pile, smiling like a fool and hoping someone might notice that she'd actually caught something.

    [hr][justify][size=8]

    at the apprentices compliment, the feline beamed a smile in the direction of her scent before focusing on thornfangs words and his decision to eat it. further delighted that the elder wanted her catch, she nodded, delighted. "i hope you enjoy it - i was tracking that thing all morning." she said with a chuckle.

    the kit spoke and her head turned towards the direction, nodding at foxwhiskers reply. "the prey sleeps a lot in the leaf-bare, to rest up for new-leaf. but finding prey isn't so hard, i can smell quite well - it's just difficult to hunt with my blindness. but i think i'm getting the hang of this!" she said, smile beaming once more.

    [fancypost bgcolor= transparent; border: 0px solid transparent; width: 400px;][align=center]◯ ◯ ◯

    [hr][justify][size=8]
    "who needs parents? we're all cooler than parents." thebe tried to cheer to kind feline up as she sauntered on over, giving the kit a friendly smile. she'd never done well with those who were upset; so much of reassurance was the physical touch of another, and she hadn't the slightest clue where the felines head was, let alone her face.

    "i-i get it, kid. my mom left me when i was your age, gave me to some twolegs. and you know what? all of shadowclan couldn't compare to them. we've got you, we'll take care of you, better then they ever did."

    [fancypost bgcolor= transparent; border: 0px solid transparent; width: 400px;][align=center]◯ ◯ ◯

    thebe had only ever met one other blind feline. he'd been an older loner tom, born with sight and blinded by a badger in his younger moons. she hadn't known him well, or very long, but having met him had helped her immensely. she'd been young and sightless, freshly abandoned by her twolegs. meeting him, a tom who'd learned to live without seeing, gave her hope in the midst of her despair. it gave her a sense of community, knowing she wasn't the only one.

    the feline's internal clock was set to her own rhythm, and while the world was awake with the sun, she rose whenever she awoke, unable to use to sun to rise. so when the tom called her name, pulling her from a delightful dream about eating a piece of prey, lacking sight but enjoying the taste of the vole. sitting up, she yawned as the tom spoke and smiled, standing and shaking the few pieces of moss from her fur, giving a few licks to smooth down her fur, knowing it didn't exactly matter in this company but having some degree of decency for onlookers.

    "i'd love to - i've been meaning to try to talk to you, littlenewt. us blind have to stick together, after all." she purred as she slipped out of the den, pausing before standing close enough for their flanks to brush. after all, it was the easiest way to keep track of him.
