What sort of serious group of thugs sends three people to challenge an entire clan on territory they don't even know?

Fools. His attempts, when dashed, weren't unsuccessful because there wasn't enough ammo, or because of a lack of knowledge. The grunts all knew the islands like the backs of their hands; born and raised there, they knew all the nooks and crannies. No — failure simply came when a challenger was too strong.

So these guys? Guzma scoffs at them, his expression shifting into one of perplexed irritation. "If you only just realised that, then y'all are stupid! It's like you're asking for a beating. Get outta here." At first, he directs his words solely at the female jaguar, but then turns to address the rest. Did these people seriously think that asking would work? The only way to get what you want from the enemy is force; for "big bad Exilers", these guys are awfully dense.

Somehow, he's gone from freezing-ass islands to miserable swampland, but maybe he's built for discomfort. It ain't like he's gonna give in, but sheesh, why'd he gotta always pick the weird places? Sure, Po Town was wet and dreary because of the rain, but if you hauled ass and went anywhere else in Alola, it was sunny and pleasant 'round the clock.

It's not even as though he liked the sweltering sun, but he damn well preferred it to some of the weather 'round here. And it's not as though he's gonna admit to missing Alola now, because that place is a cesspool of unpleasant memories, a shithole of nightmares and disappointed parents, and hell, he's glad he's away from it all in that regard. It's just a shame that means he's gotta deal with a lack of familiarity. Still, at least T ain't gonna get tried for murder. That's one good thing. Poor kid never deserved that.

On the bright side, swamps are generally frequented by a bunch of bugs. Yeah, his speciality is bug types, but the lil insects themselves are alright. The ones hardy enough to brave winter are entertaining enough to his Golisopod, anyway; somehow, the giant's attention has been caught by the odd, buzzing creatures, and that's good enough for him. If his buddy likes it here, then he'll find a way to adapt. He always does.

He's not sure if RiverClanners'll take kindly to what they'd probably call a mutant on their border, so he jerks his head and taps his paw against the creature's side. It takes but a word for the beast to be replaced by a small, spherical object, one that's quickly placed in one of the pockets at his waist.

Right. He settles himself down, posture slouched as per usual, and glances around. Like with BlizzardClan, he doesn't bother to yell out until people arrive; they come to him, not the other way around.

It's a concept that's fucking weird, if he's being honest, but that doesn't mean he's about to turn tail and run. He's better than that, and although Spectralregalia has more than enough support here, the kid clearly reminds him of someone — hell, he is that person, in an odd, warped way — and he's not gonna leave him like this. The combatant's in a situation that Guzma's never been in before, and hell, one he's not entirely keen on considering himself in at the moment, but that doesn't mean he can't help in some way, right? 'Sides, he had a feeling it'd turn out okay, and now he's just gotta convince Spectralregalia that his beliefs are true, and then stick around for the end result.

Hell, it's pretty damn desirable, if you ask him, so he doesn't really have any complaints. It's just foreign, even now, and it's not hard to see the brief flash of confusion that settles over his features for a half-second, easily masked by a contemplative, brash smirk. Saying something like thank you is still tough for him — if the situation's not dire, then gratitude tends to stick to his tongue — but his eye's drawn to those paints, and he figures he should try. Kind of. "Yeah, what they said." He's already half-rummaging, curiously looking for shades of purple, blue or pink. Something to mimic old memories.

Their vigilance is certainly higher than that of inner Po Town, he'll give them that. Still, it doesn't change the fact that he was planning on keeping the Golisopod a secret for a little longer; in BlizzardClan, it's different, but he doesn't know this place. "What, this?" Begrudgingly, he turns, reaching for that pocket again. It's partial telekinesis that helps him "throw" the ball (not that he's fully aware of that), but the momentum of the arc forces it to shapeshift, and by the time it hits the ground, the Golisopod stands in its place, whirring like there's a motor lodged in its throat and looking about as though expecting a fight. Once it becomes apparent that there's no danger, however, the beast settles itself over Guzma, and the former boss moves to answer Kali's next inquiry. "I'm joining; the name's Guzma." With the Golisopod there, he's much laxer, easier to speak to; besides, there's no real way to say that he's signing up for an alliance with RiverClan alongside BlizzardClan without sounding somewhat tame.

Well, it's a good job Guzma's good at putting on a front, because in some cases, he can definitely be classed as a self-pitying joke. Of course, he's fallen far, so perhaps it's valid, but it's not as though he's the sort to mope in public (or indeed at all, unless he's so drunk he can't think straight enough to do anything else). He hesitates as the jaguar speaks in a manner that obviously isn't his own (but reminds him of Team Skull, of the mannerisms he still loosely retains), then shrugs afterwards. "Yeah, okay." He's pretty nonchalant about the whole thing, but he still grins. And still the people come — it's a kid, this time, and she's timid (it's probably because she's stood in front of him; the notion makes him scoff). He acknowledges her with a look, but doesn't speak; she probably heard his name when he spoke to Kali, so there's no need to repeat it.

Four and five are pretty easy to deal with, too. The first of the two is silent, and he looks at her expectantly, as though expecting an introduction, but the second bothers to introduce herself. Rosewater. An interesting enough name; it mentions a flower, much like his own does, technically. He shrugs, his Golisopod whirrs, and he moves on, because now the leader's here, too. Not physically intimidating, but he gets that. It's about how you act, not necessarily how you look. With a slouched posture and sleepless eyes, Guzma doesn't always exude natural power; his command over Team Skull, before he had to leave Alola, was earned and kept by his behaviour. 'Course, Ivylee doesn't look like she's running a criminal organisation, so it doesn't really matter. "Guzma." seeing as she arrived a little later, he figures she may not have heard, so he repeats his name just for her.

Guzma shrugs. He doesn't really care if Spectralregalia wants to be called Gladion or not; he's not really Gladion anymore, considering all that's happened to him in this universe. Could one consider him Guzma anymore, anyway? He wears the shades and the chain, still has the voice and the ability to put on the façade, and Grunt still referred to him as Boss whenever they spoke, so.. perhaps he still is Guzma. Perhaps he's just tired; it's honestly hard to tell, but he gets it, that distaste when an old name is brought back up. "Nah, you can't. 'Was what I had to do, anyway. Ain't gonna let one of the grunts get beat on for no reason." And that's that. His motivation had been something as simple as morals; it turns out even so-called villains have them.

His expression shifts, then, and Guzma shrugs. "There are more constants than just that, kid. There's a reason you were let into Team Skull, after all. You did some brave shit." "The only reason I'm alive is because of the kids. And Mary says they might not even make it." Guzma frowns, then aims to swat Spectralregalia's shoulder. "So what? You're thinkin' of takin' the coward's route? These kids are gonna survive, and you're gonna raise 'em right." that's a promise if he ever made one, and yeah, it's pretty risky to make comments like that, but he believes it. "'Cause you're strong. Team Skull ain't ever let weaklings into their ranks, and we let you in, so you better start acting like you were once one of us!"

This has gotta be the lowest point of Kukui's life, right? Somehow, surely. Look, he doesn't know how, but a lot of people couldn't see through that disguise. Burnet hadn't seen through it when he'd run into her that one time, most of the kids couldn't see through it — hell, even some adults hadn't noticed. He'd not bothered to enlighten the entirety of Team Skull if just because they all seemed enamoured with the guy, and he didn't wanna connect any kind of love to Kukui.

He still doesn't know how nobody ever really noticed. It's the Professor in a thong, for crying out loud. It's like Clark Kent and his glasses — people can't seem to connect minor details, and he never really understood how they missed the obvious. The mannerisms, the voice — it's all Kukui. But whatever. Maybe Guzma's just obsessive when it comes to this sort of thing.

(This sort of thing being Kukui. He wrinkles his nose.)

"It's the Masked Royal. Dude's famous back in Alola." Guzma glances at Etherealpup as he speaks, making it clear that he's addressing her, but once he arrives, his gaze is locked on Kuk— uh, the Masked Royal. Right. He keeps forgetting every time he looks back to the guy that he's actually trying to keep his identity hidden. "You sure you wanna go up against big bad Guzma, huh?" A nigh-manic grin settles on worn features, and it's harder to keep it up now than it used to be, but he'll try.

Rummaging in his belt pockets, he tugs out a ball and tosses it into the air. A flash of light follows the arc, and the sphere shifts into the form of his Golisopod, even bigger than it was before. Still, when it sees the Lycanroc, it pauses. Whirrs inquisitively. An old friend. Yeah, Guzma knows that feeling. He taps the Golisopod gently, locks eyes with it. It seems to understand.

With a sneer, Guzma settles himself down, looking back at the Masked Royal impassively, full of faux confidence. "Fine. Ain't every day people ask for a beating, but it makes things interesting."

Funny, really, because it was picked for him by one of the goddamn sunniest people he's ever met — from what he can remember (Don't act like it's a struggle — you can remember everything he's ever said. Oh, so now his conscience has taken the form of Plumeria, has it? Fine.), he was named after the Guzmania family of flowers, and they're certainly.. vibrant. Pretty and able to house giant ecosystems, they're the rainbow-coloured homes of the plant world. Still, knock off the last part, and Guzma does have a somewhat ominous ring to it. It's why he took it as an alias, after all.

He always seems to forget that these people don't understand the concept of Pokémon, but that can only be an advantage, he guesses. They don't exactly know how to respond to the likes of the hulking creature at his side; it's a completely different entity to them, after all. "'S a Golisopod. The biggest, baddest guy around, ain't that right?" He bares his teeth in what's probably a grin, and the beast whirrs again, louder this time, claws spinning in their sockets. Regardless of how threatening the Pokémon looks, though, Guzma's acutely aware of its soft disposition; yeah, it can appear pretty damn terrifying, but it's the sweetest thing he's ever encountered. Its ferocity in battle, a far cry from its pre-evolved anxiety, comes simply from loyalty.

Then Sylmae starts speaking, and boy, her introduction's longer than the one he used to use, before he was chased outta Alola for a murder he didn't even commit. After that, his behaviour has changed a touch, and who can really blame him? Losing even more than everything does tend to damage one greatly, so perhaps his demeanour can be excused. Even when he puts the mask back on in an attempt to mimic his old personality, he's drained. He decides he's not going to try and match her bounciness with cockiness. "Yeah, right." (Ask for her help, you ass!) He narrows his eyes a touch. "A tour would be alright, I guess." Hmph. Is that good enough for the little voice in his head?

He's almost startled when he hears Kukui's laugh. Almost. Figures that a couple of days away from the guy'd give him withdrawal symptoms — and he hates him! (No you don't, dummy.) "Fuck off," he mumbles inaudibly.

Desperate to distract himself, Guzma looks back at Innocent Ivylee, who seems practically enthralled by him. It's a bit of an ego boost. "Sure, yeah." He's repeating himself, and he's aware of that, but the friendliness is all a bit disarming. He's not really sure what he's meant to do with it all.
