His throat feels clogged in that sick sort of way, and his body, running solely on fast food and what's probably classed as trash by anyone, seems to be shutting down on him. For anyone who's never experienced the feeling of your body shutting down on you, it's pretty fucking unpleasant, both because it makes you feel like shit and because hey, that's my body, why's it betraying me? (It's probably because he treats it like it's worth nothing. By any animal's standards, he's weak and unimpressive. Kinda tall, but otherwise unimpressive.) You neglect the body and the body neglects you, or so it goes, but Roach thought he and his body had a special relationship, considering how much shit they've been through together. Apparently not. He's only slightly bitter about that.

What's he not bitter about? He's pissed off because of his failing body, his lifelong inadequacy, his inability to settle the fuck down and live a normal life (not that he could stomach normal now, but the dream was there, once. Find a guy or a gal to settle down with, maybe adopt a few fuckers, 'cause the idea of biological children has always creeped him out, just.. live.), things like that. He's pissed off because he can't remember the last time he had a decent night's sleep that wasn't plagued with either a bittersweet set of unachievable dreams or frankly cruel "nightmares", and because of that, he kind of looks like a panda, or a raccoon. If he woke up one day as a raccoon, actually, he'd not be pretty surprised, what with his diet, general aesthetic and stupidly low self-esteem. "Should'a gone to counselling," his conscience (okay, a childhood friend's voice that has overridden his conscience) suggests. That stupid, drawling, sensical suggestion pisses him off, too.

"Fuck yo' counselling," Roach growls under his breath. His paws are cracked and bleeding, and he's been walking for hours, and he really, really hates these fucking stairs, but whatever. He's going to get to the top, and then he's going to nap for five days, and then maybe his wandering (and presently MIA) Golisopod will turn up and give him something to brag about. Not that he's going to keep the loud, infallible façade tucked away until the still-growing behemoth arrives, because he can't afford that. No; he reaches the top of the stairs, panting and wheezing (he really isn't fit, is he?), but once he regains his breath, his expression shifts to a wild half-grin, half-smirk. "HEY!" He's not who he was before, so his introduction has to change. He gnaws on the inside of his cheek reflectively before continuing. "Name's Roach, and I'm joining, whether y'all like it or not!"

Weak, in a bit of pain, yet somehow not sounding like either of those things are true. Yeah, that's him alright. Tired eyes, scleras an off-white, too-bright colour, lock onto Pierce, who's.. yeah, somehow sorta his size, if not a little taller (because he's gangly, but apparently, that doesn't actually mean anything when he's stood next to a serval, no matter how young this kid may be). "Cool name." He'll allow that (and the title — Head Paladin — is pretty fucking sweet, too), if nothing else, expression somewhat approving. It's hard to tell, though. It always is with him, but that's not something people should take personally. Properly praising people isn't really his forte, unless he's comfortable with them, and he's not been comfortable in a long time. The opposite, in fact. The screwed-up tarmac of a derelict city's overused roads is more comfortable than most of his recent relationships, and if that doesn't say a lot, then he doesn't know what is.

He shrugs, scuffing a paw on the ground and immediately wishing he hadn't. He's trying to live a life of no regrets, though, so.. he meant to do that. Of course. Pain's supposed to be grounding, right? "Sure, kid." Show him around? Pierce is right in the sense that Roach is an explorer, but that doesn't mean he's above being given a tour of sorts, half-assed as it'll probably be (he wishes he was, but he's not really above anything. He'd appreciate it if he got to stand on equal ground). When it comes to his paws, though, Roach admittedly halts. "Counselling, brotha'. You need it. Need someone to fix your brain." He grinds his teeth, ears back, irritation flashing across his features. He doesn't fucking need counselling (he does), his brain is fine (it isn't), and he doesn't want help with his feet (that's not true). "Nah, I'm cool. They'll fix themselves." "Ignore it and it'll go away? Cuz, that ain't how it works." Yes it is. "Shut the fuck up," he mumbles under his breath, and he probably looks like a madman, but at least it works.
