But the she-cat held her tongue with narrowed eyes, her tail curling patiently around her paws. Her distasteful look soon fell as the she-cat before her caught the apprentice's attention again. Russetpaw dipped her head in respect to the queen as she left, an action she usually reserved for Mossflight. It had felt like it'd been moons since she'd been in the nursery, the place where she'd lost her siblings. She wondered briefly if Nightkit had siblings, or if the she-kit was alone. Russetpaw knew the feeling of loneliness far too well. But she shook herself from her thoughts, eyes narrowing again and her whiskers pressing back against her face. The apprentice hoped not to let the kit down.

It was only when a loud screech interrupted her thoughts of pleasing the clan that she realized the danger. The apprentice froze with wide eyes, frozen with fear, as the shape of a large owl flew towards her with outstretched talons.

"That was amazing." She whispered. Her gaze drifted to the owl and her eyes clouded with fear again. Russetpaw looked back at Spottedpaw, noticing blood dripping from wounds she hadn't noticed before. Fear gave way to guilt.

The she-cat's mind was a raging storm of fear and guilt. Part of her wanted to throw herself into the river. How could she let herself be around other cats for so long? The apprentice knew she was bad luck, but this time, it was serious. She could've gotten her clanmates killed! She cursed herself internally.


    Russetpaw shifted on her paws, her eyes distant. "I better go check the fresh-kill I've caught." She murmured, slipping away from the group. She was grateful her voice wasn't as shaky as she felt.

The apprentice hadn't caught a thing except for a single mouse. The night was still young, but with an owl for fresh-kill, the she-cat believed that any contribution she made would be meaningless. Her stomach grumbled as she sniffed the mouse, wondering, if only for a moment, if anyone would notice her scarfing down the fresh-kill. It would be easy to say the owl had found it, or some other creature bumping in the night. But Russetpaw didn't like lying. She sighed, covering it with soil again, and padding in the opposite direction of the clump of apprentices. The she-cat couldn't bring them bad luck when she wasn't near them, right?

Russetpaw hoped that Tanglepaw would believe she hadn't heard it at all. She quickened her pace, trotting swiftly in the opposite direction.
