    ✦ ✧ ✦ // SAMEEEEE

the stuttering embarrassment that seemed to overcome sae when he first turned towards sky caused the lilac tom's expression to twitch with amusement. the tables had turned now, huh? but as soon as those vibrant optics locked so firmly onto his, he retracted this thought almost instantly. he wondered if he was blushing again, though he wasn't sure why. he thought of raising a paw to check, but didn't. he felt frozen again, not in an unpleasant way, more like he was in a trance-- a blurry-eyed trance that wrapped his consciousness in blankets of mint green and bleach-white and baby pink and saeran and saeran and.

"i know. i wanted to." it was a spurt of the moment thing, spitting out words in a voice that sounded confident well-composed despite how the thought put into them was quick, impulsive, and based solely on the strange way he was drawn to the stranger in front of him while simultaneously wanting to bury his face in his paws. and even though once his own words processed in his brain they send a shock-like feeling coursing through his body, he didn't regret saying them. part of him felt like he'd been waiting to say them for a while, even though that couldn't possibly be true, because they wouldn't have applied to the situation until just a few moments earlier. his eyes were still in line with sae's, steady and wide and warm. and enchanted. how beautiful.

the memory of a face popped into his mind, prompted by the words he'd just thought. the last time those words had graced his consciousness, he'd been looking at this face, all determined green eyes and heart-wrenching ear-to-ear grins. he would recognize it anywhere, even the hazy recreation of it in his mind, the details all blurred by the curse of time and jammed mental space. destrian. he could still hear himself saying it, though he'd only repeated it in his head now; his soft annunciation of the syllables, the way it rolled off his tongue like butter, the compressed longing in his voice each time it found it's way to his lips again. and suddenly this all made sense; he knew exactly why he was acting the way he was around sae, why he was such a strange mix of blushing nerves and impulsive confidence.

destrian wasn't the only crush he'd ever had anymore.

✦ ✧ ✦ the rubbing on his back felt nice, and the fact that saeran was the one rubbing it felt nicer. he tried to focus on the first aspect of that, mostly, thinking that it might help ground him a bit. anything that could help keep his mind in the present was beneficial, because if was pulling him towards the past like an enormous, mega-strength magnet. he dug his paws into the ground and started kneading the dirt, which was something he hadn't done in almost a month. he expected to feel defeated, ashamed of himself, for going back to a habit he was desperately trying to force himself out of, but instead, he felt his mind steadying out almost instantly. he started kneading faster.

    and then his mind slipped.

if it'd been a while since he'd allowed himself to stim, it'd been ever longer since he'd gone Away. he'd almost convinced himself that it was over, that it would never happen to him again. so much for that.

sky'd seen and heard a lot of people describe their entrance into similar states as falling down a rabbit hold, but it wasn't like that for him. there was falling eventually, but not at first. at first, it was stepping into a cloud of mist. sometimes there were things in the mist, figures and faces and objects from his past and present, but sometimes it was empty. this time, he saw nothing but sensed that he was very much not alone in there. he stepped in very quickly because he could still hear sae's voice in the back of his mind and he wanted to get back there fast. he'd messed up enough in his life, lost enough too, and that wouldn't be the case with this one. he wouldn't let it be. no damn way

    ---

he came back about ten minutes later in a mass spasm. it passed in only seconds though, leaving him blinking and coughing, legs curling back in to his body ever-so-slowly. his hazel eyes were foggy when he opened them, foggier than they'd been in months. being Away did that to them, among other things. in stark contrast, though, his mind felt clearer than it had in as long as he could remember. he blinked, and his paws found their way back into the dirt. "am i finally free? it's strange how this has all worked out. i had to find good company to realize that i don't need it."

he wasn't talking to sae, though he was quite aware of the caracal's presence just behind him. this was made clear when he shifted his gaze in the other male's direction only moments later, blinking once, hard. he didn't speak again.

    ✦ ✧ ✦ // he's like extremely self-aware when he's in his right mind so

    yess ;))

sky wasn't quite sure what to do with his recent discovery. he was focusing so much of his mental energy on holding his expression steady, making sure he was giving away no hints in his eyes more than anything, that he barely had any left to do the necessary thinking. he probably needed to be alone, but he didn't want to. no wonder.

the tone of sae's voice was unexpected at least and heart-breaking at most. sky found something in his chest stirring again, and he found himself oddly comforted by the fact that he knew why. suddenly, a lot of the things he'd been feeling and saying and doing made a lot more sense. realizing this made him feel a lot more confident in his own skin, a lot more equipped to handle everything. it didn't take away his nerves, though, of course not. so instead of rushing forward and comforting sae in the ways he wished he could, he stayed completely still. but the block on his eyes' display broke all at once, and hazel irises practically melted, a mix of emotions just as complicated as those in sae's voice flooding the depths of his gaze. in fact, the other blocks on his physical responses seemed to have broken, too-- all of them except the one preventing him from rushing forward. probably because that one was called anxiety and crippling doubt in his ability to react properly in social settings, and though it'd be heavily suppressed lately, it was still there, for certain.

"why?" he repeated in a soft voice, like the sound of morning rainfall. a thousand possible answers danced across his consciousness. he couldn't say most of the ones he wanted to and he knew it. not now at least, and probably not ever. that was something to think over later, though. right now, he needed to live in the moment as much as he could. this beautiful moment on a beautiful day, with a beautiful boy sitting right across from him, looking into his eyes. his paws stirred against the roof for a moment. "because it's you," was all he said, and even that felt like way way too much once it was out of his mouth. he thought about looking away, but didn't want to lose any moments of all of this, god forbid.

    ✦ ✧ ✦ // PROTEC

    NO ATTAC

sky had expected sae to try and get a closer look at him, talk to him, or something along those lines of what one usually did when he was returning from Away. instead, the caracal had pulled his entire shape into his arms. sky was suddenly very glad that he'd come back from away, and he vocalized it with a gentle murmur of, "oh. nice." though his voice was emotionless in the way it always was when he was speaking to himself aloud, his intended tone was conveyed in the way his head instinctively rested against sae's chest, practically nuzzling into the silky warmth of his bleached fur, eyelashes fluttering over hazy optics.

and then sae was speaking again, his voice so broken that it yanked at sky's heart, and his eyes were instantly shifting upwards to make contact with the caracal's, craning his head backwards to do so. finding sae's eyes was just as instinctive of a gesture as the relaxed placement of his head. when their eyes met, all of the changes that had just taken place in sky's mind seemed to fade; they no longer mattered, not in comparison to this, to sae. he was familiar, comforting, a steady, constant force through it all. he was...

he drew in a steady breath, held it, then exhaled in the form of two sentences: "sae, i'm alright. i promise."

✦ ✧ ✦ maybe sae didn't get it, but sky did. the time the caracal spent gazing upwards gave the lilac tom a chance to let down his guard, relaxing physically as well as mentally, and begin to mull over the unanswered questions that lingered in his head after his recent discovery. the most important of which: why saeran?

the longer he looked over the caracal, the more it made sense. mint green eyes that drew his attention from so far away with their vibrant hue, alluring because of their peculiarity. bleached fur that was equally as unexplainably unusual, silky to the touch and easy on the eyes. physically, he was new, exciting, a mystery. sky wanted to know when he'd gotten his tattoo, and where, and from who. he wanted to know why his fur was bleached, if his brilliant eyes were natural or a mutation. and, of course, he was hot... and that was always nice.

but it was more than that; it was his personality too, his habits and his facade and his heart. especially his heart. for a guy who put up such a tough front, all emotionless comments and snappy responses when you didn't know him, he had the softest heart. sky wondered why he tried so hard to hide it. he wanted to find out. he wanted to help him learn to show it to the world. and perhaps most of all, when he was sitting here, gazing at the lovely caracal, he wanted a piece of it for himself.

"everyone should be admired by someone," he commented vaguely, shoulders twitching into a shrug, eyes sliding away since sae's attention seemed to be focused elsewhere and he didn't want his one-way staring to come off as strange or rude. it took a lot of willpower not to sneak sideways glances at sae every few moments; he locked his eyes on a tree near the cabin and tried to focus on other things to prevent himself from doing so.

// i know?? they are too good for this world?? bless bless bless??

✦ ✧ ✦ sky was an unmoving mass in sae's arms, comfortably cuddled up against his chest, hazel eyes two floating foggy moons gazing up at the caracal. "i'm okay," he repeated, voice so soft it almost bent in the air. "it's okay, sae. i'm okay." he hadn't released how much he liked the sound of the other male's name on his tongue until now, when it slid out so gently, so effortlessly. his maw parted in an easy breath.

when sae leaned forward to bury his head in sky's fur, the tomcat took no moment of hesitation before trying to adjust himself to make the caracal's positioning more comfortable. he turned his neck then leaned forward again, resting his head ever-so-carefully against the side of saeran's. the two felines' cheeks brushed so gently that it felt like the touch of a feather. sky shivered; he couldn't help it.

when sae spoke into his fur, he almost shivered again, but he managed to control it. he couldn't stop his tail from curling pleasantly, though, and his eyes from fluttering shut for a brief moment when he wanted to focus on things other than seeing. "sae," he said, wanting to hear the name on his tongue once more. lovely. "you did help. you're helping now. it's all okay." he spoke the last sentence with an extra amount of force-- warm force, comforting force, wanting to reassure him of it's truthfulness as much as possible.

✦ ✧ ✦ skylines paused thoughtfully, eyes drifting upwards to the sky that sae had been so carefully observing. white clouds floated lazily through the cerulean sea, the fingers of a vibrant sun poking around the hazy cream shapes. it really was lovely; he understood why sae seemed so interested in it. "i don't know," he commented with a subtley-introspective lilt. "i believe that everyone is good on the inside, that even if they try to hide that good, try to present themselves in a different way, it's still in there somewhere." a glassy brown gaze flashed across his mind's eye, tufts of cream fur curling at it's reddened corners, pupil dilated an unhealthy amount. he swallowed. everyone is good on the inside. everyone.

to sae's third comment, he gave his head a gentle shake, and that was all. he liked his choices. he could feel the caracal looking at him again, and his eyes lowered to meet the minty gaze without a second thought. the hazel optics gave away little to nothing now, blank and emotionless in a regular sense, widened in the subtle way they seemed to always be.

✦ ✧ ✦ sky was late to enter the great hall, despite having been up for hours. artificial sunlight from the enchanted ceiling dappled the seventh year's cheeks like freckles as he slid through the towering doors and found himself amongst a horde of young students, unlike himself only in the spirited conversations they shared. clutching his books tighter to his chest, the wizard boy silently weaved his way through the clusters of his classmates, hazel eyes wide with their characteristically undefined curiosity.

he looked fully awake despite the early hour-- bright-eyed and bushy-tail, as the expression went. this was likely because he'd been up for hours, eyes scouring the pages of the very books that he was holding now, not for school, but simply for pleasure... it was no mystery to him why he'd been sorted into the ravenclaw house.

once at his table, the lanky boy slid into a seat next to lance, offering his acquaintance and housemate a warm, sideways grin. he then took to setting his books in a neat stack on the table, wiping away stray bits of dust that had gathered on the covers with sweeps of his pale fingers. a lock of soft purple hair drifted in front of his eyes, and he brushed it away mindlessly with the back of his hand. his expression was empty and far-off, like he was imagining something in another world.

after a moment, though, the hazy glare in his eyes cleared, and his tall figure was shifting to cast a glance over his shoulder, leaning backwards ever-so-slightly. he extended a long-fingered hand and brought it to rest of the back of a familiar form, a hufflepuff boy with bleached hair and vibrant minty eyes, whose lovely body warmth was detectable even through this brush of physical contact. luckily for sky, saeran sat directly behind him at his table, which made for lots of inter-house conversations between the two. "good morning," the ravenclaw mused with a pleasant lilt, retracting his hand so that it rested neatly on his lap.

✦ ✧ ✦ sae's response elicited a trail of giggles from the ravenclaw's lips, head tilting daintily as tender hazel eyes fixated on the other boy's expression. his entire form seemed to drip exhaustion; sky could see it in the downward droop of his eyelids and lips, in the foggy weariness coating his voice. how amusing. he didn't understand the aversion to early hours in the least bit; how was it any different than the other sections of the day?

"i didn't read all night," he said, gaze moving to trail his fingers as they lovingly stroked the spines of his gathered novels and textbooks. he could feel the hufflepuff's minty green eyes on him, and his cheeks started to tint a pinkish hue."i slept a few hours, i think." his tone was full of playful insistence, lips quirking upwards at the corners.

to lance's comment, he gave another round of laughter, this time shorter and more tame. "yep, that's it, lance. sky's the name, and photosynthesis is the game." he shot an amused glance at his housemate before returning his focus to sae, still smiling at his own joke.

✦ ✧ ✦ sky remained silent, not sure quite how to vocalize his thoughts and feelings in that moment without sounding ridiculous. he could feel sae's grip loosening on him, and he unwound ever-so-slightly, letting his head fall back from its resting place on the caracal's chest. he stayed in this position for a moment, neck tilted backwards, rest of his tabby form curled into sae's lap, gazing up at his clanmate like he was the moon overhead. he was overcome with a sudden sense of belonging, of comfort, like he had finally returned home after a long, long trip away. the caracal's mint green eyes glowed, even in the thick blanket of darkness. he wondered if sae was his home now, if that's what this feeling meant, what all of this meant.

"we can go sleep in the cave, if you want. it's warm, safe, and not too far away." his voice was so soft that it was barely audible, nothing more than a breathless whisper drifting through the air like a wisp of midnight wind. like sae, he knew that it would take too long to return to camp now; the first signs of morning would already be showing by the time they were bidding each other farewell and shutting the doors of their separate cabins... and more than that, sky didn't want to be alone right now. or, rather, he didn't want to be without sae.

✦ ✧ ✦ sky's hazy optics stretched at the mention of his name, lips parting ever-so-slightly as they formed a loose, effortless grin that lit up his entire expression. "i'm honored," the newly-promoted tom purred, his head falling instinctively into a deep, respectful bow. pride was bubbling up in his chest, and he could hardly contain it. he really was beginning to fit in here, much to the surprise of the many doubts and anxieties that had been pestering him ever since he'd returned to his reformed version of his clan. his paws began to work against the ground absent-mindedly, their movements joyfully energized.

when his gaze returned to frisk's, it was melted and tender. "i'd prefer the position of honor, if that's alright." this was likely a predictable choice on his part, being as docile and good-spirited as he was. he just hoped that it wouldn't subject him to a path he didn't want to take, focusing solely on healing. though he'd certainly work on his nursing abilities since he'd been given this role, that certainly wasn't his passion or the line of work he wanted to pursue. no, his sights were set on different things, one of them being the religious ceremonies frisk had mentioned after his promotion. now that sounded right up his ally. but more than anything, he wanted his old rank back, the one he thrived in: harbringer of peace. maybe, just maybe, if he performed well in this position, a spot in that rank could be in his future-- fingers crossed for now.

the announcements only got better. at the sound of sae's name, the tomcat practically jumped out of his own skin with excitement, head whipping around as he searched the crowd for the familiar caracal. in fact, he was so focused on finding sae and congratulating him that he missed most of the other announcements. whoops. it'd more than likely be completely fine, though, because he was sure everything that frisk had mentioned would come up again sooner or later.

✦ ✧ ✦ agreed!! i totally love frisk. they're freaking adorable, aaah. i honestly can't get over how they'll go up to these important figures from other clans who are way way bigger and way way older than them and just be like "heyyoooo" ahahaha <3. 10/10.

✦ ✧ ✦ the possibility of sleeping where they were hadn't occurred to sky, but mulling it over now, he realized that it was quite a good idea. he nodded in agreement, once, gently, then moved to make himself even more comfortable against the caracal. his head nestled into the dip of the larger feline's shoulder, eyes flickering up to gauge sae's expression as he did so, wanting to make sure this was okay.

once settled, his tail curled in between his legs and his eyes fluttered, starting to close. he wasn't so much physically tired-- or "sleepy", as sae had put it-- as much as mentally drained. his mind needed a rest more than his body, a chance to escape and unwind. "it's very comfortable," he assured the caracal in a lazy meow, a soft yawn splitting his sentence in two.

✦ ✧ ✦ sky raised his hands on either side of his head, feigning a plea of innocence. "forgive me for being studious." the others had no way of knowing that his latest nighttime reading session had been for his personal enjoyment rather than for his classes, and he played this advantage to its fullest, cocking his head pointedly.

to the hufflepuff boy's mild retort, sky shot him a playful glare, partially glad that his attention seemed to be drifting, head lolling backwards and positioning being adjusted against the wooden table. he wanted to quip, "define 'eat me'", but instead he remained silent for the moment.

lucius's approach caught his attention, drawing his eyes upwards and encouraging his lips to form another friendly grin. the gryffindor's face was certainly familiar, though sky wasn't sure if he could consider him much more than an acquaintance. sae barked out his response before sky could squeeze in a word, sounding characteristically annoyed and distance. it took a lot of internal willpower for sky not to roll his eyes. "well," was his answer, expression still pleasant and welcoming.

✦ ✧ ✦ sky sat back, silent, as jello filed through a list of questions that he didn't know the answers to. gosh, he really did need to start studying up on healing more, especially after his new promotion to the position of honor. though he wasn't planning on focusing entirely on the medical side of the position, one of his main responsibilities as an honor was to be a clan nurse, so he at least needed a basic knowledge of the area.

hazel eyes locked forcibly on the berries at jello's feet, dubbed "deathberries" or "yew berries", and tried to take in every aspect of their appearance. similarly, the soft pink nose twitched as it breathed in the berries' scent, storing it in long-term memory as much as possible.

✦ ✧ ✦ lucius's statement about an important event at lunch compelled a quirk of the eyebrows from the ravenclaw boy, hazel gaze sliding from lucius to saeran and back again, fruitlessly looking to find some sort of explanation in their faces. the gryffindor was speaking again before he could figure out what he'd been referring to. this secondary comment earned a sideways smile and a gentle string of laughter, though no words were vocalized in a response, this seeming unnecessary.

when the seat next to him was occupied, sky felt his body tensing unconciously, wary of the other's sudden and unwarranted proximity. he readjusted his position on the bench, sliding a miniscule distance to the side as he did so, though he hoped that the other boy wouldn't notice. his eyes flickered up to sae's face, something like unplaced disappointment swimming around the pupils, then lowered again.

the compliment lucius gave him was kind, but uncomfortable to the boy's ears; he hardly knew how to respond. a hand sliding up his own arm and settling in the crook of the elbow, rubbing gently as a sort of make-shift way to fidget, he forced his lips into a soft grin. it was a miracle that he wasn't ruby red in the cheeks. "thank you." it wasn't all compliments that made him feel so uneasy, just this kind in particular, and unfortunately for him, his house placement made sure that he received this exact type many times a week.

much to his relief, another boy soon approached and seemed to draw some of the attention away from himself. raising his head in a steady sweep, the ravenclaw found himself looking at a familiar face. roman, slytherin, someone he'd seem around quite a bit, but rarely talked to at all. his eyes caught on the metallic glint of a badge on the other boy's outfit: a head boy pin. it would've elevated sky's opinion of the slytherin boy, had he not been so obviously enthralled by it himself. arrogance was more than dissatisfactory to this youth's taste. he looked away.

his attention had snagged itself on a gathering of students a few tables down, all wide smiles and full-body hugs, when he heard roman chime into the conversation again, this time with a comment directed at him. he swiveled his positioning to peer back at the other boy, expression easily sitting blank. "i wasn't studying," he said simply, gaze steady and strong but free of any sort of challenge. he wasn't hear to start a fight-- he never was.
