Wholly unequipped for the journey and more than a little fatigued from his earlier travels, Ilima sliced his paw on the way up — a superficial cut, not one to fret over all that much, but still, one that stung a fair bit. His expression remained one of discomfort after that, a few, lingering minutes of pain accompanying him on his way up, but now he's here, the throbbing has been replaced by a muted sense of awe, and the Saluki thinks that maybe the walk was worth it. Despite the unpleasant chill, a far cry from what he's used to, the scenery makes up for it all, and he allows himself to be suitably amazed for a few moments, eyes scanning the picture before him.

"Remarkable," the former Trial Captain breathes, inhaling shortly after and shifting his standing position to one that's slightly more comfortable, taking weight off his sliced paw and placing more on the opposing hind leg. He blinks once or twice, then, shaking himself from his thoughts, and looks around mutely, searching for someone to arrive. For lush islands, this one in particular is.. quiet. He wonders if it's because it's the most vulnerable.

Unaware that somebody had even been close enough to hear him, Ilima turns, eyes widening as Misty emerges. A fellow canine, though one that smells so much like the terrain that, in his half-unaware state, he'd failed to notice her approach at all. A foolish move on his part, but at least it hasn't ended in bloodshed. These people aren't savages, after all, are they? Observing the way she extends a paw in his direction, the Saluki reaches with his uncut one to attempt a shake, feathery ears twitching a touch. "Do you know the cause of it?" By it, he means the floating, though he assumes she can garner that herself. If she has enough civility for a paw-shake, she has enough intelligence, presumably, to infer the meaning behind his speech. It's a shame if not.

A pause passes, and between his speech and Misty's inquiries, two more arrive — one, silent, seems to be scrutinising him, and the second arrives in time to thank him for his compliment of the territory, gratitude that he acknowledges with a small nod and practiced smile. "I'm Captain Ilima—" he cuts off, tilts his head— "Or.. I was Captain Ilima. Ilima is fine, now." Considering he's no longer an active Trial Captain, he can't exactly claim that title. It's a habit, though, and one he'll struggle to shake. "I'd like to join, if that's alright with you, or whoever oversees the joining processes." He'll admit, he's not done much research on this — perhaps he should've. Maybe they have trials here — maybe he'll have to do one. Won't that be a wonderful twist? He smiles at the thought, though quickly turns to face Tama as she again pipes up. "It isn't that bad, but if you have anything to stop the bleeding, I would appreciate it."

And so what if he is? This is, after all, his trial, and what with him being Trial Captain, it is sort of his duty to at least linger near the place every so often, just to establish that it is indeed still a working test for young trainers looking to completing the Island Challenge to complete. As simple as it is, this first trial is vital; if you can't get past it, then you can't get past Hala, and if you can't do that, then you're screwed, anyway. And besides, as simple as it at first seems, that giant Raticate is terrifying. He's heard many a startled scream come from the bowels of this place — but honestly, he quite likes the oversized creature. When not enraged by the concept of another foolhardy kid coming to take an item from it, it's particularly kind. Like any other creature, despite the fact that it's not even half-tamed, it's easily bribed with food, and Ilima isn't afraid to give it what it wants. Who would be, when the other option is probably it gnawing off your arm? Nobody wants that — least of all him, who sort of needs his arms for Z-Power and all that. They're pretty important, his limbs.

For once, though, his lurking has a purpose, because there's currently a trainer in there now, failing at his trial. He's heard multiple shrieks of frustration, and the frantic pattering of feet that can only mean the poor kid's not had a chance to heal their Pokémon and is being ruthlessly pursued by one of the many, merciless critters that live in that cavern. Well, there's a reason he said that they ought to be liberal with their potions and revives — but who listens to Trial Captain Ilima, first of many? Who listens to the easy one? Certainly not this trainer, that's for sure, and they're suffering because of this. It doesn't take long for them to stumble out, a bit of a mess and followed by feral shrieks, and Ilima looks up from where he's sat on a rock, watching them trudge bitterly past him. "Potions," he coos, lifting a finger. It's not difficult to tell that this kid wasn't raised here. They'd've paid attention to his advice otherwise. "Don't be shy with that pocket money!"

At his side, his Smeargle huffs, and he sets a hand on its head, rubbing at its muzzle thoughtfully and sending the defeated trainer on their merry way. "Now, they'll be ready for her. And angry," Ilima reflects, glancing back at the cavern's dark mouth. He doesn't envy the trainer one bit.
