It happened again. The earth itself began to move, shaking as if the ground were having an anxiety attack. This earthquake was smaller than the previous ones, and caused little destruction. It was over within seconds. There were only a few branches and rocks that were upset by the shaking, and of those that moved, none of them caused any damage or any noticeable disruption.

That is, all but one small branch. It had been slowly breaking for the past week or so, but this tiny earthquake was just enough to make the branch snap. When it fell, it landed in such away that it leaned up against a root, leaving a small pocket between the root and the branch. And in this small pocket was a verdin, a bird only about 4 inches long if she stretched. The bird struggled to get the branch off, but to no avail. Although the branch was only a few inches in diameter, and could barely even be called a branch, it was too much for the little verdin to lift. In a fit of panic, the bird began to sing. However, this was no ordinary songbird.

She opened her beak, but no song came from her lungs. Rather, the soundwaves in the air seemed to be manipulated by the bird somehow. And the sound produced was not the usually tweeting one would expect from a bird. No, it was an almost perfect repitition of a twoleg song:

"HELP! I need somebody! Help! Not just anybody. Help! You know I need someone! HeEeEeeelp!"

The little bird attempted to stick her wing out from under the branch. Hopefully it would be visible, but it was so small that Melody was unsure. Of course, if Mel had realized that it was a feline that had called out to her, the bird would have tucked that wing right back in. She didn't want to become someone's meals. However, the verdin's vision was currently blocked by the root, so she couldn't see anything.

"You know they got me trapped in this prison of seclusion!" she began, her voice now sounding much different. Once again, the "voice" that was singing switched. "Get me out of here, get me out of here!"
