[fancypost bgcolor=transparent; borderwidth=0px; bordercolor=transparent; width: 325px;]So he was leaving. Castiel stood beside Suga, his expression as blank as ever, though his eyes held a glimmer of warmth. He offered a small smile, stepping forward. It would be strange without Phantom; he was like a face you always expected to see around. But he was mortal, and mortals rarely stayed in one place long - they moved and travelled, lived and died... it was so foreign to him, despite his newfound mortality, which he was coming to accept. "Um.. good luck out there, Phantom," he called.

[fancypost bgcolor=transparent; borderwidth=0px; bordercolor=transparent; width: 325px;]It was late evening. Overhead, birds sang quietly as they flitted about the jungle treetops. The sun was just barely visible over the horizon, casting out brilliant shades of crimson and purple across the sky as it died for the day. The air was warm, with a cool breeze ruffling Castiel's fur every so often. It was a beautiful night - one the former angel found himself unable to enjoy.

The sickness had started just over a week ago. Everyone had said it was just a cold; after a couple of days it started to get better, and so he forgot about it. But this was different. His head was swimming; he sat near camp entrance with clouded blue eyes and a pained expression, claws dug into the ground as if to hold himself steady. Every time he moved, it was like the world tilted and changed with him. He wanted to throw up, pass out, or both. Suddenly there was a pang in his chest and he pitched forward. Everything went black.

Castiel unknowingly thrashed about on the ground for a minute or so until he suddenly just fell limp, his eyes rolled into the back of his head. He didn't stir; he was barely even breathing. But he'd definitely caught the attention of a few of his clanmates, who were calling for help.

[fancypost bgcolor=transparent; borderwidth=0px; bordercolor=transparent; width: 325px;]Castiel's eyelids fluttered, and he drew in a sharp breath, suddenly jerking awake. He felt sick to his stomach, and everything hurt. He was on his side - he simply lay there for a moment, before finally forcing himself into a sitting position, his forelegs shaking. His blue eyes were clouded as he turned towards Suga and the others, lips twitching into a frown. He was obviously confused. "W-Wh..?" he stammered, voice hoarse.

[fancypost bgcolor=transparent; borderwidth=0px; bordercolor=transparent; width: 325px;]Castiel was dying. Cancer - had someone told him a few billion years ago that his end would be met by cancer, he might've called them delusional. Cancer was a mortal sickness, and soon enough he would be claimed by it. Every day since his seizure, he had been overcome by paranoia, waiting for the next attack to come, or maybe for his heart to just stop. He had thought that he would be able to accept life as a mortal - but the possibility of a looming death had shaken him, convinced him otherwise. He needed to get his grace back.

The message from Michael was alarming. He hadn't seen much of the archangel since he'd found him passed out outside him home. The scrawny young tom approached, blinking slowly, frowning. "Brother," he greeted, coughing. "I-" His gaze fell on the little bottle, and he stopped, shocked. "Is that..?"

[fancypost bgcolor=transparent; borderwidth=0px; bordercolor=transparent; width: 325px;]"Lirim," Castiel muttered, his voice low and obviously not enthusiastic. He was in no mood to deal with Lirim; the cancer was eating away at his body and the longer he sat idle, the closer he came to a mortal death. Still, he approached behind his other clanmates, frowning. "Who are you here to visit, exactly?" It was obvious he was in a weakened state.

[fancypost bgcolor=transparent; borderwidth=0px; bordercolor=transparent; width: 325px;]Castiel approached slowly, trying his best to listen to the meeting, though it was hard when he was so distracted. He appreciated the change to pro-clan, and e was especially glad that the guilds were no longer mandatory he didn't feel as if he fit well into any of them. "Understood," he called up to Jericho. Then again, did any of this really matter to him? He was doome to a mortal death anyway.

[fancypost bgcolor=transparent; borderwidth=0px; bordercolor=transparent; width: 325px;]Castiel practically limped over; the mortal sickness was getting to him more and more as each day passed - not only physically, but mentally. Paranoia ate away at his mind until all of his thoughts were consumed by the bone-rattling anxiety. He was so used to feeling free, and strong, and he couldn't stand living like this anymore. He needed to get his grace back.

What was he doing, still attending Joinings? He didn't know - he felt like he needed a distraction. Work was a good distraction. He was a soldier - he was used to work. He approached slowly behind Suga, seemingly unphased by Finn's strange behavior. Frowning, he waited for a response.

[fancypost bgcolor=transparent; borderwidth=0px; bordercolor=transparent; width: 325px;]Castiel simply watched Suga, his gaze following the bundle of herbs. It took him a minute or two before he was able to pick them up with shaky paws and ingest them. They left a bitter taste in his mouth, but he was so numb that he could barely feel it. He blinked slowly, lapping at the water. It calmed him, msde him feel better. A seizure. Yes, he'd heard of that, but vaguely. Would there be more? Were they deadly? He had survived for billions of years - would his death come at the hands of a mortal sickness? "Y... No, it's fine. You can tell me now," he muttered to Suga.

[fancypost bgcolor=transparent; borderwidth=0px; bordercolor=transparent; width: 325px;]Castiel felt a shiver roll down his spine at the sight of the tears wetting Michael's cheeks. The archangel - or former archangel, he supposed - had always been a pillar of strength to Cas. God's warrior. The leader of the angels. His big brother. But now... now he just seemed sad. Weak. Broken. It got to Castiel. It felt as if heaven was crumbling to dust. Was God punishing them for something? What had they done?

"Castiel, I'm leaving SunClan very soon-" The former angel's breath caught in his throat, and his blue gaze followed the vial. "-and I want you to have it." His eyelids fluttered. "Michael..." he began, softly, but the other continued to speak. His stomach felt twisted up into knots, his throat was burning. Let a lot of people down? What was he talking about?

When Michael finished, Cas shut his eyes, quiet for a minute. He wanted to tell Michael to stay, that they could sort out- whatever this was- together. But in his heart, he knew that there was no convincing the older angel. And maybe this was for the best. He considered reaching out and hugging Michael, but he refrained, instead fixing him with a glistening gaze that displayed all of the same affection and sadness. "Michael," he repeated, his gruff voice raw with emotion, "I... I would've remembered you fondly had you told me to or not, you know that. You were... a better older brother than I could've asked for. And I..." He lifted the vial with careful paws, "I understand. Will you, in return, promise me to take care of yourself?" Tears pricked at his eyes, but a small smile graced his lips.

    this is so sad

[fancypost bgcolor=transparent; borderwidth=0px; bordercolor=transparent; width: 325px;]It was nearing midnight. Overhead, angry black clouds blocked out any light filtering down from the moon and stars. There was no rain, but thunder growled ominously in the distance; any knowledgeable person would predict a storm within the next hour or two.

Castiel stumbled into camp, alone. He didn't make it back to his house; he collapsed on his side just outside the door, wheezing, unable to call out for help even if he wanted to. He was dying. Why? Was he being punished? Had he done something wrong? He didn't know, and frankly that was the last thing on his mind.

Michael. His older brother. Gone. Where? He didn't know, but the archangel's last gift to him was clamped in his jaws - a small glass vial containing a swirling blue liquid that gave off an almost peaceful glow. To Cas, it was a second chance at life. Shuddering, he dropped the vial gently into his shaking paws. For a moment he just sat there, hesitating. Had he done the wrong thing, letting Michael go off like that, alone and powerless? It had been his wish, but... should he have tried harder to save his brother? No - he couldn't start having regrets, not at this point. He just had to push on. With some difficulty, he pulled the cork off the vial's opening and parted his maw. Its contents lifted into the air like smoke and snaked into his mouth.

Castiel's heart skipped a beat, and for a moment he could feel everything - all of the blood pumping through his body, all of his muscles working, everything. And then it was as if he was on fire. Writhing on the ground, he gave a pained yell, and for half a second the camp filled with a pure white light that would've burned the eyes out of any mortal or demon, had they looked. Then everything was quiet, and Castiel was on the ground.
