squirming and writhing, jager tossed and turned. he had long since decided that he felt more comfortable sleeping side-by-side with the river, the sound of the water soothed him, often lulling him into a deep sleep, but for some reason it wasn't working today, it hadn't worked yesterday either. it was like a bundle of nerves had been shoved straight into his stomach, or like a swarm of flies had been swallowed by him - the smoke was antsy and restless, unable to settle. so, in an attempt to tire himself out, jager had volunteered to go on extra patrols, catching prey and marking borders, while trivial were enough to take it out of him enough that he thought he'd fall straight into a slumber. jager was wrong.
jager had been moving for some time now, his tail had drooped into the water at one point, but he hadn't noticed in his frustration. eventually, he got tired and just decided to close his eyes and force himself to lay still, hoping his twitching body would get the message and calm. but no, the uncomfortable feeling grew stronger while he was still, sending a few shivers down his spine. the head rivergurd was unable to keep himself in one position, and found himself moving so that the sensation would decrease in intensity. however, after numerous mental arguments, jager made himself do it again, with the promise that he would freeze his body until he did fall asleep.
after a few anxious minutes, it finally seemed to be working! the smoke's breathing slowed down, and the uncontrollable spasms died down until they were but a distant memory fading rapidly into the horizon of sleep. things were quiet - the perfect sleeping conditions. the water wasn't running, the birds weren't tweeting, bugs were strangely non-existent. per- but that wasn't right. unfortunately, jager was too wrapped up in falling into the abyss of sleep, and wasn't his over-analytic self, so these details escaped him in his groggy state. it wasn't until...
whosh!
a harsh breath left his lips, when jager felt a scream leave them. for a few moments, he felt trapped, frozen, unable and struggling to comprehend what had happened. jager's breathing sped up, into pants, desperately capturing as much air as he could, treating the precious oxygen as his savior, a lifeline. "wh-mm...?" dazed, he tried to speak, but a single murmur left his lips. his voice had been soft, feminine, light. the next thing that was felt was the cold rush of water attacking his body, sending forceful shivers colliding down his body. feminine was not how you could describe his voice, so why was it so apt now? this was not correct, he'd had to see what was wrong. the sensation in his limbs returned, but even if it hadn't jager would still have scrambled to the river, eye searching for a glimpse of his reflection, eager to see his own eyes meeting his so he could put these strange thoughts to rest. a sharp gasp was thrown from his mouth.
he was a she?
how? the face staring back wasn't his own, and he'd never had a dream so vivid and real before. soft kittenish fur framed his face, giving him a much younger, softer look. the fur was a vibrant red, patched with white and browns. calico. that was what the coat was called, but calicos were predominately female. oh. jager began to understand what was happening, and he didn't like it one bit. dreading what he'd find, though the shock of having a female stare back at you when you were pretty sure you were a male a moment ago, he turned his head back to the riverside. there he was: limp, dead. jager's body.
shock flooded him, freezing every blood cell in his body, or her body, rather. his breathing began to increase again, until a screaming screeching sound vibrated in his mind, and - whoosh! bolt upright, without thinking again, jager sat bolt upright, heaving with the effort. a splash sounded distant in the background, but sound was slowly returning to him, the birds and bugs were back, despite being quiet. he understood what had happened, but it hadn't prepared him for the shock of... possessing somebody else. demons did that. he felt dirty and corrupt by taking part in that practice, like he was joining them and agreeing with their methods. he couldn't control it though, surely that counted for something.
that was how he'd be found, the normally composed, calm expression nowhere to be seen on the head riverguard's face, only a blank, horrified, disturbed look etched into it. the body of the red tabby femme he'd just taken over in the river, alive but unconscious, there had been a mind in there, jager had felt it, felt her protesting another soul inside her body, pushing him away, his shock had left him vulnerable and enabled her to evict him, sending his soul back to the nearest body. his own.
