Kelsie smiled and wrapped her arms around her girlfriend's neck, unable to contain a smile as the kiss broke between them. "Have I ever told you..." she countered, "...that I love you more?" The shorter blonde bit her lip, distracted entirely from the previous talk of weather. Nadene was too delectable. If things kept on like this, Kelsie knew she wouldn't be able to keep herself from coaxing her back into bed again. And that wasn't an option today, unfortunately.
So, she stood on her tiptoes and kissed Nadene's nose before breaking out of her grip entirely, a bounce of playfulness in her step as she backed toward the door. "Big day today! We better head out..." she winked in Nadene's direction and bounded down the rickety three steps leading down from the shack. She jumped the last step, not slowing as her feet touched the grass. "Race you to the barn!"
The barn, a good few meters of tall grass from the shack, was only a husk of what it once was, covered in ivy. It would collapse one day, probably sooner rather than later, but, for now, it stood, a distant, arcadian monument to the fallen civilization that was this small town, made smaller by the infection that had wrecked their world.
Kelsie raced toward it, only glancing behind her once to make sure Nadene was following pursuit.

nothing boring, huh? jihye smiled and looked around, thoughtful. she noticed mingxiu had sat next to her, but ignored it, for now. "fine, fine, let me think..." her voice lingered on the last word spoken. she didn't want to start off with anything too wierd or embarrassing. but, after considering, the dare she came up with sounded pretty okay. "okay. unnie, pick someone in the room to give you a piggy back ride."

finished with her instructions, jihye turned her attention to mingxiu. "heya. not much, just playing truth or dare," she concluded quietly, smiling at the other member of her group. "i like your outfit," she added.
jihye had always felt closer to jihye than any of the other members. maybe it was their similarity in age, or maybe she just liked her the most. what wasn't to like?—she was always so sweet and soft-spoken. and her accent was so cute.
    "where were you during practice?"

Kelsie ran, unhindered by the tall grass slapping her legs, laughing, glancing back every so often to taunt Nadene. Finally, she came closer to the barn, and slowed. One barn door was left just barely ajar.
Furrowing her brow, Kelsie slipped inside, thoughtful. Had they left the barn open like this?
Surely no intruders had made it this far.
She nearly pissed herself when some obnoxious bird took flight in the rafters.
"Shit..." Kelsie sat on a sack of grain by the door while she waited for her heartbeat to slow. "The coast is clear," she called to Nadene.

The cool morning air pricked at Takashi's face as he stood at the tram stop, looking out over the tops of the buildings at the candy-colored sky. The sun was only just coming up. The streetlamps were still lit.
Takashi pulled a mustard colored beanie further down his forehead as the tram rolled up the street. This hat was the only thing reigning back his wild bedhead. When he'd woken up, his hair was one wavy black mass, pieces sticking out at odd angles. A mess, altogether. It always was, because he always slept with wet hair.
The seventeen year old's dark eyes squinted. He glanced behind him once and then boarded the trolley.
Most students at Hongyuan Academy lived in the dorms, he assumed. Sometimes he wished he did, too. The commute was inconvenient. But renting an apartment with a bunch of local college kids was cheaper, so that's what he did. At least he got his own room.
The commute lasted thirty minutes. A ten minute trolley ride to the center of town, then a twenty minute walk, unless he paid taxi fare. Usually, he didn't. Like today. Takashi liked the walk. It cleared his mind.
And every day like clockwork he arrived for breakfast at six thirty-ish. Give or take. Today, Takashi grabbed a couple chocolate muffins and a container of milk and sat down at a cafe table outside the cafeteria.
Someone joined him. She didn't blink. Her clothes were torn and she had gross, blood-matted hair. A real appetite killer. "Go away," Takashi mumbled. The spirit left, and Takashi bit into his muffin thoughtfully. Usually getting rid of the spirits wasn't that easy. They wanted to rest, even if it meant Takashi didn't get any.
Takashi was one of the last pure sirens able to see the dead. Which was awkward sometimes. Or inconvenient. Like when the ghosts would appear when he was showering, or when he had a guy over. Sometimes he just didn't have time for spirit counseling. Today, he didn't have time. He had classes to go to.
Takashi threw the first muffin wrapper towards the trash bin and missed. He'd never been quite a basketball star. He didn't bother to pick it up.

Barely a minute passed before some kid—sporting a pair of antlers, no less—picked up the wrapper Takashi had thrown. Tree hugger, huh? Takashi's dark eyes followed him thoughtfully, before he remembered he should have thanked him. Oh well. He would find him later.
Standing up, Takashi stretched his legs and took a swig of milk from the mini carton. He started unwrapping his second chocolate muffin and headed inside the cafeteria, where it was warmer.
As he surveyed the room, he couldn't help but for his eyes to be drawn to the guy with, well, a tail. In fact, he accidentally made eye contact with him. Shit. Shitshitshit. Now he must seem rude, he thought. It wasn't like he was checking him out. Did he think that? Probably. Or maybe he thought he was judging him. Shit.
Looked like he'd have to go talk to him now. Actually no, f-ck that. Takashi embarrasedly sat down near the doors, looking away and biting into his muffin. He had another power—way cooler than seeing ghosts, in his opinion. He could project his thoughts in other peoples minds. No need for talking out loud, no need for approach.
Right about now, an unfamiliar voice would pop up in Huo-lan's head, saying, Wasn't checking you out. Or judging. Just looking around. Sorry.
Maybe it was an overreaction to apologize.
But this was exactly why Takashi didn't go swimming in public—he never went shirtless, his gills embarrassed him. Only, Huo-lan couldn't hide it. He could only assume, though perhaps wrongfully, that the other siren was equally sensitive about his fish-parts.

    [font=trebuchet ms][size=8]
Takashi glanced toward's Huo-lan's table when he didn't respond, just in time to see, well, a lot more than he had anticipated. The other student had lifted up his skirt to reveal his flaring fins and the barely-modest black lace that covered his, um, private area.
Oh, god, Takashi was beyond embarrassed, yet he was unable to look away until the other student had let down his skirt and walked to a different table. Then, his eyes fell, wondering what exactly was wrong with him that he had just stared stupidly like that.
Finally, he realized that he had spilled his milk. The carton had tipped over entirely, and the liquid inside had ran forth and over the side of the table to drip on his legs and lap. Great. He stood up, cleaning up the mess robotically and heading off to the men's restroom.
He had been in shock for most of the walk here—now, his thoughts flashed back to the sight of Huo-lan's lower half. What a first impression. Then, even, there was the overtly sexual remark he had made next. "Kiss my cock, then we'll talk"? Who was this guy, some kind of exhibitionist Dr. Suess? How was someone supposed to react to that?
The dark-haired boy slouched against a wall by the sinks, and glanced at himself in the mirror. Mustard-yellow beanie, black pants, combat boots. A puffy black bomber jacket. His outfit was nondescript, nothing about his clothes particularly suggestive or inviting. Why him? Then it occured to him that Huo-lan most likely behaved like that around everyone. After all, did he mind everyone else seeing what was under his skirt? Apparently not. The realization made him able to relax.
Crossing over to the sink, Takashi took off his beanie and turned on the cool water, letting it fill his hands then splashing his face, washing off all the oil and sweat that might have accumulated during his commute.
Thinking, he stepped back again, and pulled up his shirt a bit, looking at the reflection of his exposed torso, at the shark-like gills on each side.
Maybe they weren't so bad after all.

Maybe he'd take Huo-lan up on his offer. Eventually.

Takashi let go of his shirt and spun toward the origin of the voice, eyes dialating defensively. He felt mildly suprised, realizing the other boy had followed him here. And embarrassed, again, to have been found with his gills out. How long had Huo-lan been standing there anyway?
Then—whats this? An apology? Takashi's eyebrows raised. Still embarrassed, he mumbled, rather shortly, "Yeah."
His eyes settled on the drink in Huo-lan's hands, then roved up to his face, where the slightest pink tinge was visible; they wandered down to Huo-lan's flicking tail, then all the way back up to the brightly colored hair on top of his head.
Noting Huo-lan's apparent embarrassment, Takashi's demeanor changed, and he stepped forward, almost trapping Huo-lan against the wall. "Fourth," he said. Glancing indicatively at the blood-water, he said, "You're a blood siren, right?"
    He paused.
"I've been thinking. Is public, um, strip-tease, like, a customary greeting among your species? I thought that was an incubus thing..."

Huo-lan's reaction was much more...submissive than Takashi would have expected. And, oh my god, if that little whine didn't get his blood flowing. All Takashi could think about was just, just—to get his hands on him. When the other brushed his hair away from his face, though, his senses cleared a little, and he realized, briefly, his own self-conciousness.
And then Huo-lan pulled him closer. Instinctively, Takashi lifted him, setting him on the edge of the bathroom counter, making their height difference—Huo-lan's 5'3" to Takashi's 6'1"—a whole lot more manageable. Before the taller student could register what was happening, exactly, the blood siren's teeth were sinking into his flesh. He made a noise, a sort of gasp, under his breath, that he was immediately very embarrassed of. If his blood wasn't being drained he probably would have blushed. His eyes closed, and he mumbled, warning, "Ah, careful."
