A soft kiss. An arm at her waist, holding her close. Half asleep, Kelsie managed a smile. "Good morning," Kelsie greeted softly, her voice thick with sleep.
    It was seven months since the outbreak. Another day in nowhere.
    But Kelsie, who generally subscribed to the 'live in the moment' school of thought, didn't mind so much.
    For now, she felt safe. Wanted. Loved. Safe from the infection, even.
    Contentment had been hard to come by even before the outbreak, but, somehow, Kelsie had found it here, between a couple of moth-eaten quilts, in the warmth of the sunlight that poured in from the slats in their boarded up window.
    She felt fortunate, almost. Life was simple, but it was undeniably good.
    She rolled onto her back, turning her head to look at the beauty that had woken her up.
    "Isn't it early?" she asked. "Can't we sleep a little longer?"
    Kelsie's hand reached out and brushed gingerly against her girlfriend's cheek, guiding a stray whisp of black hair behind her ear. "Just a few more minutes?"

Nadene was right, of course. Sometimes Kelsie got the feeling that without Nadene's little motivational speeches, she would have died out here already, of fear, or depression, or starvation. Most likely, all three.
    "Alright, I'm up," she said.
    Her smile faded slightly as she sat up and smoothed down her hair. She stood up and crossed the room, retrieving an oversized sweater from the makeshift coat-hook on the back of the door (which was, basically, just a nail protruding from the door). Then, she turned, and grabbed her backpack from beside her bed. All set.
    "Do you think it will rain today?" Kelsie asked, opening the door a crack and peering out. No signs of danger, but there were gray clouds in the distance. Far off, definitely.
    They would have an hour or so until it did rain, if the clouds were even moving in their direction.
