I always knew he was mad. From the day I met him it was clear. The way he was bouncing off the walls and on the beds and cracking the worst puns imaginable. Always with the puns, nonstop, I could say it was driving me mad. Now back to the point, madness, yes. But not in the way that you would think. No he wasn’t mentally ill. He wasn’t one who heard things or saw things without them actually being there, not offending those who do. He was just. Unique, that’s it.
He was unique.
Although being told ‘act your age, your better than this, there are those younger then yourself that are looking up to you, Oliver! Stop doing handstands on the desk will you?’ Constantly by one of the few teachers in which would put up with him Oliver was never settled. He was constantly looking for a laugh, many of the reasons why he had caused several teachers to transfer to other schools around the country.
In most people’s eyes, he was a hero. I don’t blame them, he got rid of Miss who would often yell at us for just looking somewhere else in the room and not directly in her eyes during a lesson. I remember that day so clearly, like it was yesterday and I couldn’t even start to enlighten why he was such a good friend but if I did you would surely be reading here all day.
Well after this situation he was moved away, never to be seen again. We didn’t entirely know where or why he been moved away. It sounds a tad rude but for all we knew he didn’t have parents nor siblings which made it hard to believe that he was ever so happy. He was like a mystery to us, no one knew where he was or even who he was all together.
He often popped in to school at random as if he chose when he could see us, I doubt that was the case as he disappeared just as quickly as he came. It was beyond strange. Than he just stopped coming. We all missed his visits and it’s selfish to say but I believed he only came back for me.
Well, I guess you’re thinking this little tale of Oliver is finished, no?
It’s not.
As if my wish had come true, I got to see Oliver once more before I was forced into making life changing decisions. It was a miracle in my books. I felt more than loved. Out of all that had become close with him he chose me to see. For all I knew he did see the others but I don’t like to imagine that.
I do admit, it had been a strange day for myself. I wasn’t acting like myself which ended in me wandering through a nearby forest. I do say, it was a beautiful little adventure and if I hadn’t have felt differently I would have never seen him. He sorts of jumped out of nowhere and unlike wearing his normal green and red robes that he had multiple pairs of, he was wearing a suit. I admit shamefully I did scream a little. This once bright and happy teenager was now frowning. I thought I would never see the day!
After noticing me his expression changed. His eyes now gleamed like they use to and his pearly whites shining on the dim lit forest floor. ‘Alice!’ He had exclaimed before embracing me tightly in one of his energetic hugs. ‘Oliver, I thought You left, never to be seen again!’ I had answered back wrapping my own arms around his back.
And without any warning Oliver let go of me and sat down on a nearby rock, his expression now turned back to the one I had first seen him in. ‘What If’ He had begun before I interrupted him with a confused liked grunt. ‘What if we run away? What if we left today?’ He had continued without even acknowledging my grunt. ‘Oliver, by the looks off it, you have a job, I have a family, Oliver, I’m sorry!’ I whispered in response without looking from him. ‘What if we went on an adventure, we say goodbye to safe and sound?’ He said almost talking himself into doing it. ‘Oliver!’ I had half yelled before quietening down after his dark brown eyes looked up at me as if he no one left. Which I suppose he didn’t. ‘What if we’re hard to find’ He muttered. ‘What if we lost our minds’ He said after a short pause of awkward silence.
By now I had thought to let him go on about his rant, but he had something going. It did sound enticing no matter how little detail he had given me. ‘We let them fall behind, and they’re never found’ A small murmur had interrupted my thoughts. ‘What?’ I couldn’t help asking out of curiosity but my questioned received no answer, instead Oliver kept on rambling.
‘And when the lights start flashing like a photo booth and the stars exploding, We'll be fireproof’ He again whispered, his legs had now managed to find their way up onto the rock and under his arms so he was now rocking back and forth.
‘Oliver, you’ve gone mad!’ I sighed frustrated that I was the one to find out. He now had tears pouring from his dark miserable eyes, and his navy blue suit was now crumbled at his awkward sitting position.
‘My youth, my youth is yours’ He cried slowly wiping his tears as I pressed myself against him for reassurance. ‘If we run we’ll be, Trippin' on skies, sippin' waterfalls. We can run away now and forevermore’ Oliver muttered rocking slowly forwards and backwards in my arms. He was now accepting it, all these years he was and he had always known it he was just wasn’t ready to accept it. He was just speaking his mind. The truth so loud you can’t ignore Alice, I repeated to myself. He’s mad!
‘What if we start to drive What if we close our eyes We're speeding through red lights into paradise 'Cause we've no time for getting old Mortal bodies, timeless souls Cross your fingers, here we go’ He repeated twice over before I managed to make him look me in the eye. ‘Oliver, if people find out your mad they’ll kill you’ I choked tearing up as he did the same after his eyes had just gotten dry again.
‘And when the lights start flashing like a photo booth And the stars exploding We'll be fireproof My youth My youth is yours Trippin' on skies, sippin' waterfalls Run away now and forevermore The truth so loud you can't ignore My youth, my youth, my youth. My youth My youth is yours Trippin' on skies, sippin' waterfalls Runaway now and forevermore My youth My youth is yours The truth so loud you can't ignore My youth, my youth, my youth’ He repeated before falling asleep with a few sobs in my arms.
That was the last day I saw Oliver, I could only presume they had killed him. Something those with power to those who went mad. Horrible, horrible, horrible.
