“Wow, it’s such a nice day! Great weather to disembark!” Iris declared, inhaling sharply and exhaling, grinning happily at the smell of the sea air. She threw her arms out, still smiling in content as she soaked up the warm rays of the morning sun from where she stood on deck.
“Vee!” A loud exclamation came from down by Iris’ feet. Hero was down there, stretching out and shaking her fur. She looked really stoked as well, and her movement imitated that of her trainer’s. It seemed they both wanted to catch as much sunshine as possible! Hero bounced happily, clearly excited to be disembarking. A very good jumper, the Eevee launched herself up onto the rail of the boat near the ramp, glancing down at the people standing on the docks. She gave a happy purr, looking to Iris. Her fluffy tail flopped wildly. Iris inhaled again, dropping her arms to her side. Glancing around, she noticed that her traveling companion, Kelsey, was suddenly not near her anymore.
“Huh? Where’d she go?” Iris wondered aloud, turning in a full circle as she looked. “Huh? Oh!” Iris spotted Kelsey down on the docks, realizing that she’d already disembarked. Iris quickly fumbled with her backpack, not wanting to keep Kelsey waiting. This trip had been Iris’ idea, so she didn’t want Kelsey to get bored anytime soon. “Oh, Hero, let’s hurry!” Iris said to the Eevee. The brown-haired girl whipped around. Behind her, on a small table, another Eevee was dozing in a patch of sunlight. Iris unceremoniously scooped her off the table, hugging her to her chest. The Eevee in question, Desdemona, cracked her eyes open blearily.
“Ee?” she mumbled softly. Apparently she was either still tired or uninterested by the disembarking, because her eyes almost instantly closed back up. It was pretty easy to tell she was limp, like a ragdoll, because as Iris moved around frantically, her little brown body flopped around like she was weightless. Maybe she was used to sleeping through stuff like this?
In the meantime, Hero jumped from the railing of the ship and landed squarely and expertly on Iris’ left shoulder. Her head would have been an option too, usually, but today Iris had done her chocolate brown-hair up into a bun positioned directly on top of her head, which would have made it hard to land there. Once settled, Hero began looking around, searching for something. Iris was also moving frantically as well, looking slightly panicked. Desdemona’s paws dragged after Iris’ movements,
“Hermione!” Iris called. How had she let the other Eevee out of her sight? Iris wasn’t worried that Hermione had run off, or that she wouldn’t come back. She was worried about making her friend wait too long! “Hermione!”
“Eevee!” Hero chipped in as well, calling out for the Eevee in question.
From somewhere unknown, a third Eevee, Hermione, came scampering across the deck. “Eevee!” she called out cheerfully. Iris turned to face her, just in time for Hermione to jump from ground level and face-plant into Iris’ hip. Hermione dropped down, looking stunned for half a second, but remained unfazed for the most part. Hermione wasn’t quite as practiced as Hero was when it came to mounting her trainer.
“Hermione, jump here first!” Iris instructed gently, indicating the ship railing. For a half second, Iris had a horrible vision of Hermione losing her balance and slipping into the water. Thankfully, that did not occur, because Hermione managed to land squarely on the rail. Iris turned her body carefully so Hermione would have a very clear shot of her unoccupied right shoulder. Hermione took the hint and launched herself towards Iris. She landed sloppily on Iris’ shoulder, her paws scrabbling against Iris’ back and shirt for a few seconds as she tried to find solid footing. She settled fairly quickly and let out a satisfied noise, her facial expression making it obvious she was very pleased with herself.
“Great, let’s go!” Iris exclaimed, dashing forward down the gangplank. The sudden movement almost caused Hermione to lose her footing, but she caught herself just in time. Hero remained completely unfazed, though she did look in amusement at Hermione. Desdemona’s little limbs just swayed slightly with the movement. Iris bounded down, her backpack bounding against her back, as she appeared beside Kelsey. “Hey, don’t forget us!” she said laughing, knowing Kelsey would have done no such thing. Smiling happily, Iris began glancing around at the stalls, sailors, boats, and people just milling about. It wasn’t quite as crowded as she was expecting, but Orre was a pretty remote region, she supposed. A Wingull cried out from a flock overhead. “This is a nice harbor!” Iris said, directing her observation at Kelsey. In reality, it probably wasn’t much different from most other harbors.
