    erin o’connor — eighteen — freshman —

//yes love, that’s great! i’ll let you know whenever i’m able to get back on my laptop so you can switch it back if you’d like c:

Erin clapped along with a few other people at the end of the coach’s speech. Might as well show some support for the team that will be at nearly every sporting event, the blonde though, watching as the coach then began passing out flyers to the cheerleaders and sending them in the direction of the exits. Oh goodie, more obstacles to get through to be able to go to my dorm. The eighteen-year-old carefully listened to the small list of instructions currently being given at the end of the current speech, which were as simple as ever. 1. Get your dorm number from the receptionists on the ground floor. 2. Go to your dorm. With the speech concluding, the freshman class stood up and began making their way to the exits.

Unlike how she arrived, Erin was one of the first ones to reach the gates and hastily began looking for any route that would lead her away from the cheerleaders and toward the parking lot. Green eyes gazed through the crowd but sadly, another route wasn’t there. She’d have to go through them. Sighing heavily, Erin pushed her shoulders back and forced herself to stand straighter. Might as well make yourself look halfway decent, Erin. The young blonde made her way through the crowd and before she knew it, was only a few people away from being able to walk through the exit.

Curiously, she leaned to the side to see which cheerleader she would have to be putting up with. Erin’s eyes narrowed as she focused her eyesight on the cheerleading uniform. God, I need new contacts. She caught sight of blonde hair before anything, and then her eyes landed on the young woman’s face. She immediately frowned. Of course she would be stuck with the one that had been on top of the pyramid. Not even two minutes later, she was facing the girl and had already held her hand out for a flyer. She knew that the girls had to hand them out to everyone and already knew that hers was going to end up either in the trash or somehow underneath the seat in her car. “I’m not trying out. Just need one for a friend.”

    erin o’connor — eighteen — freshman —

Erin raised an unimpressed brow before shooting the cheerleader a polite smile that was filled with annoyance and resent. Kill her with kindness, Erin. Don’t pop off. Needless to say, the young girl didn’t listen to her thoughts. “Oh, you didn’t have to worry in the first place, hun. If I wanted to hang out with a bitch, I’d have bought a dog.” With that said, Erin turned on her heel and easily slipped through the crowd and headed her way to her car with a smile on her face. It took about a five minute walk to reach the parking lot from the stadium and then another two minutes to reach her car. From there, she was on her way to the resident halls across the large campus. It didn’t take all that long at all and before she knew it, she wasn’t finding a parking spot in the student parking lot.

Although she felt a bit of guilt about her insult to the cheerleader, she didn’t let it drag her down. She found a relatively good parking spot and quickly pulled her red 2015 Dodge Dart inside it. She pulled the key from the ignition and pressed the button on the dongle to pop her trunk open. She pulled out a set of white suitcases and a yellow gym bag before reaching up and closing her trunk. She hit the lock button on the dongle twice and the car’s horn beeped once to signal that it was locked. Then, Erin wordlessly made her way across the parking lot, giving everyone who looked in her direction and kind smile as they all made their way to once place: the receptionists’ desks. Easily getting into the building, Erin lugged her luggage behind her as she came to a stop in the shortest line available, patiently waiting to receive her room number and the name of the person she was rooming with for her first two semesters of college. She whipped out her phone to pass the time, sending a detailed text of how orientation was and what she was currently doing to her family’s group chat. Within seconds, her older brother Samuel had sent back a “ooooh kill ‘em, Erin!” with a flexing emoji at the end. The text put a grin on the 18-year-old’s face before she opened her solitaire app.

About ten minutes later, Erin stuffed her phone in her pocket as a clear “how can I help you, ma’am?” filled her ears. She quickly walked up to the desk with her luggage behind her and informed the woman that she needed her room key, number, and her roomate’s name. With a genuine smile, the woman asked for her name and some of her information before handing her her dorm key along with a sticky note that had her dorm number and her roommate’s name written in a pretty cursive on it. Room 356, 3rd floor, Lucette Crawford. Erin stuck the sticky note onto the front of her shirt and easily made her way to the elevator, eager to settle into her new life as a college student.

    tumblr_inline_nhb935Krgq1s3l2i4.gif

    — erin o’connor —

Erin didn’t pay any attention to the person that had rushed into the elevator right before the doors closed, her entire focus on the intense game (to her, anyway) of solitaire happening on her phone right now. She heard the usual apology given by anyone who cut off elevators, and gave a short nod to whoever it was before she looked up from her phone long enough to press the floor button again. Watching as the button lit up and the elevator doors successfully shut, she gazed back down to her phone. Then, she heard the “you again” mumbled in her direction. That voice.. no, it couldn’t be.

Erin’s head shot up, her gaze drifting from her phone screen and to the girl standing in the elevator with her. The same girl who she just so happened to insult earlier. Please don’t let this day get any worse, Erin pled. Her breath caught in her throat as another wave of guilt washed over her. Perhaps she shouldn’t have said what she had back at the stadium. The blonde’s eyebrows furrowed as the cheerleader standing across from her looked at the sticky note that was currently residing on her chest.

    Then, it hit her.

Erin swallowed the lump in her throat before she nodded in confirmation. “Yes, I’m Erin and that’s my room.” Her voice waivered just the slightest bit and she hoped that the other girl didn’t catch it, but knew that she most likely did. She licked her suddenly dry lips and prayed that the woman wasn’t Lucette, her roommate. The eighteen-year-old cleared her throat before she spoke once more. “Are you Lucette?”

God, I hope this elevator opens soon, she thought. The awkward vibes filling the elevator we’re suffocating, and she prayed that if this girl just so happened to be Lucette, the rest of her first year of college didn’t turn out to be as awkward and tense as this moment was.

    tumblr_inline_nhb935Krgq1s3l2i4.gif

    — erin o’connor —

All that Erin could manage to get out after Lucette confirmed who she was was a quiet “oh”. She fiddled with her phone as she looked around the elevator before looking down to the floor. She noticed the other girl attempting to seem not as uncomfortable as she truly was. On the other hand, Erin was practically leaking the feeling. She locked her phone and put it in the pocket of her skinny jeans before pulling at a short loose string hanging from the end of her tank top. Could this really be happening to her right now? Erin O’Connor, possibly the nerdiest girl on campus being paired with Lucette, a cheerleader and definite HBIC. Not only was that happening, but it was also the fact that they had instantly went for each other’s throats back at the stadium.

The quiet ding! of the elevator made Erin’s head shoot up. Unsurprisingly, Lucette was already filing out of the elevator and heading down the hallway in search of her, their dorm room. Erin followed a few steps behind her and whenever she turned the corner, she saw that Lucette had already unlocked the door and entered, along with claiming the bed on the right. Erin easily pulled her luggage set onto her own bed and voted to leave the door open and allow some of the noise from the hall enter the room. Being in a closed, silent room with just her and Lucette definitely wasn’t ideal at the moment.

Easily, Erin began unpacking her bags. She pulled most of her clothes out of her suitcase, all of which were good clothes either gifted to her or bought from a thrift store. She sorted and folded her clothing all while thinking of something to say to Lucette. A quiet sigh escaped through parted pink lips as she opened her mouth to speak all while continuing to fold and place her clothes into the built-in drawers underneath her bed. “Hey, I,” she cut herself off as she dealt with a stubborn shirt, unfolding it and folding it once more to get the perfect crease later on. Quietly, she started once again. “I’m sorry about earlier at the stadium. I was tired from all of the traveling and it was hot and I was uncomfortable. I didn’t mean to pop off at you,” Erin said, her back still faced to Lucette as she placed the last of her clothes into the drawers and began to move down toward her own computer desk at the end of her bed. The blonde risked a glance at her roommate before unzipping her yellow gym bag and beginning to unpack her office supplies and everything she uses for school.

//ahhh i'm finally able to be back on my laptop! the sweetness oh my goooosh

Erin gave a small smile to the girl as she apologized, even if she couldn't see it from her back facing the scholar. "Oh, you don't have to worry about it, it's fine. Completely understandable," she said as she pulled out the few textbooks that she would need for her classes. She gently placed them on the desktop, easily aligning them so they were straight and even. The blonde then began putting all of her desk organizers where she wanted them, then started organizing her writing utensils and putting them in the small pen organizers resting on the corner of the desk. Next came the two desk frames she had: one of her with Samuel and then the other with her, Samuel and their parents. She put them in the spot she wanted them in before she turned to look at Lucette, watching her as she hung her pictures on the walls.

"I'm majoring in biology," she answered, placing a few last minute touches on the desk before pulling out a few trinkets, a small succulent plant named Marty and a small organizer for her necklaces, and then placed them on her bedside table. She then took a seat on her bed and watched Lucette before speaking. "What are you majoring in?" She automatically assumed that it had to do something with textiles considering the sewing machine the woman had just set up. Fashion, perhaps?

//this is so short, i'm sorry omg. my muse is so low at the moment.

    ALEXANDRA KRIEGER

Sipping on the cup coffee she had just made in her coffee maker, Alexandra sat down at the small, round dining table situated on the covered balcony of her studio apartment, basking in the feeling of the sun on her skin. Although it was almost always cold during fall, it was surprisingly warm this morning. She let out a gentle sigh and took another drink of the hot beverage in her hand before reaching down and scratching the beautiful golden retriever laying at her feet behind his ears. The dog let out a sigh and looked up at her as she unlocked her phone and opened Twitter, wondering what was going on in the world. The blonde scrolled through her feed, liking and retweeting the occasional meme, catching up on a soccer match she missed between Germany's Women's National Team and Canada's. A few minutes afterward, a thread tweeted out by her university caught her eye. Tilting her head in the slightest, almost unnoticeable way, Alexandra read through the thread. Apparently her university decided to partner with a university in Japan. Interesting...

The twenty two year-old woman then closed out twitter before going to the school's website and logging in, easily checking her assignments and current averages, which were all great. Taking a quick glance at the time, she noticed that she had about an hour and a half before she had to be in class. With a heavy sigh, she stood from her balcony chair and entered her apartment through the opened sliding glass door. She put her cup of coffee onto the counter in the kitchen before heading to her dresser to decide what to wear for the day. Ali slipped into a pair of tight jeans and pulled a blue and white striped button up shirt on, leaving the first two buttons undone before she hooked a small, simple silver necklace around her neck. She slipped into a pair of white loafers, brushed her hair back into a ponytail, brushed her teeth, grabbed her sunglasses and her keys, filled Max's food bowl and gave him one last pat on his head before heading out the door.

Not even five minutes later, she was pulling onto the highway and heading to class. It took her a bit longer than usual to reach the school considering that the traffic was a little heavier than normal, but she was still on time. She walked into class right as soon as the professor began speaking. "Guten morgen, klasse! Ich habe heute ein neues projekt für euch alle. Sie erhalten einen Brieffreund von unserer partnerschule in Japan. Die aufgabe und weitere anweisungen sollten in ihrer klasse online aufgeführt sein." (In English: Good morning, class! I have a new project for you all today. You will be assigned a pen pal from our partnered school in Japan. The assignment and further instructions should be listed in your class online.) Alexandra took a seat in the back row, pulled out her laptop and went to work after logging in. She read the instructions, which were pretty simple: keep in touch with your pen pal, bond with them, and discuss assignments given in class and how business works in different countries. Then, submit a summary each week of what was discussed followed with a five sentence short answer to whatever question the professor has. Simple enough, Ali thought. She read down the list of students listed, green eyes searching for her own name among the others. Finally, she found it. She nipped the inside of her cheek as she read her pen pal's name and their email address. Hana Sumeragi. Sounds nice, she thought as she copied the girl's email and pasted it in her own, already typing out a small introduction to the woman.

    Pen pal Hana Sumeragi,

Hello! I'm Alexandra Krieger, a German student from the university that yours recently partnered with and your pen pal for the project that we are being assigned right now. I think before we just start discussing our assignments, we should get to know each other a little bit first. I'm twenty two and currently in my third week of senior year. I have an older brother and a younger sister who I love dearly. I also have a dog named Max and I love him to death. I'm a vegetarian and love all animals (yes, including sharks. I adore them and actively watch the western Shark Week marathons). What are some things about you?

    Sincerely, Alexandra.

P.S. I apologize in advance if I mess up while writing to you in English. It's obviously not my mother tongue but I try! :)

Satisfied with the email, Ali filled in the "subject" area of the email as "Pen pal assignment" and then hit "send". Now, all she had to do was wait for a reply from her partner.

    ERIN O'CONNOR

Erin nodded in response. It was indeed very stereotypical if she were being honest, but that didn't really matter. Her major was stereotypical itself. A nerd pursuing a degree in biology? Of course she would be a STEM major. She watched as Lucette gathered her now empty luggage and walked through the door and into the hallway. Erin yelled back an acknowledgement as Lucette walked down the hallway. Might as well get back to unpacking and decorating, she thought before she hopped off of her bed and reached for the gym bag that was still packed with photos and small desktop decorations.

One by one, Erin hung up the photos on her wall. Many were very different time wise, but they all stayed the same by including the same people: her mother, father and Samuel. She hung up a somewhat large map of the world, and her wanderlust almost immediately kicked in. Already on the map were a few points that she wished to visit sometime during her life and was already planning a trip to Frankfurt, Germany during her summer vacation. Of course, she was planning completely earlier than necessary, but it was a habit of hers. Anything that needed planned usually went to Erin as she thought of everything, had an average of two backup plans and generally just enjoyed planning. That's why her planner for her freshman year of college was already packed with information and important dates.

After finishing her wall decorations, she unpacked her shoes and a plastic shoe organizer that would fit underneath her bed that she bought from Wal-Mart and placed the twelve pairs of shoes that she had bought with her into the organizer, zipped it up and then pushed it underneath her bed. Last but not least, she pulled out a wax burner and a few scented waxes in plastic packaging. The young blonde plugged in the burner as soon as Lucette returned to their dorm and began plugging in her mini fridge. Looking at all of the options she had on her bedside table, Erin looked over to Lucette, wanting her opinion on which wax she should burn. "Should I burn the Aloe Water and Cucmber, Aloha Citrus, Bonfire Beach or By the Sea wax cubes?"

    ERIN O'CONNOR

Erin reached out with her own gloved hand, though significantly smaller than James', and shook his hand. She then looked over to the other two men in the tent and gave them a polite smile. "It's nice to meet you all," she said as she stuffed her hands into the pockets of the military parka once again. She walked a few steps toward the table that James returned to and listened to the briefing, taking a mental note to leave all of the information confidential save for a few loosely described details whenever she began to write her article later on. The woman gazed down toward the map on the table and watched as James pointed out specific places during the briefing, taking this time to study the map and take note of the markings and important places.

Erin watched the exchange between the three men with an interested expression. The way that the guys were acting together made it seem as if they had been working and going on missions together for years, but Erin knew for a fact that the team had only been created a little over a year ago. As James continued to speak and brief his team, Erin turned and dug in her bag that the soldier had placed on a chair near the entrance, searching for her pocket-sized notepad and ballpoint pen. Then, she began making short but detailed notes, already preparing some things for her to refer back to whenever she finally began writing her article.

She succeeded in keeping her opinions out of her notes, thankfully. This article wasn't the usual opinionated ones that she typically wrote. It was more news-centered, more factual than she's ever attempted to write. It would be a tough challenge for her, but she knew she could do it. If she survived her university's journalism course, she could whip out a huge article full of facts about the missions she was expecting to go along on. In the middle of finishing her notes, she realized that James had stopped speaking and then wrote down what she remembered before she whipped out her notepad. As she began to place stars beside the more important facts, Erin realized that one of the men that James had introduced her to before had walked up to her. Grant, was it?

Erin smiled as the young man smiled with his teeth this time. "I'll be sure to do that. Thank you for giving me a bit of advice," she said, genuinely thankful. She had no idea what she was doing, which was very bad. Here she was, in a warzone, with no idea of who she was supposed to stick with. Thankfully, Grant had given her the advice to just stick with Captain Carter. She watched the ginger as he walked away from her before returning seconds later with a pack in his hand. Erin grabbed it, the weight of it shocking her for a second and dragging her arm down before her muscle finally reacted and pulled it back up. She placed the pack down beside her bag before shooting Grant another smile. "Thank you, Grant." It was obvious that the ginger was the more compassionate one out of the three of them, and Erin appreciated it.

The blonde journalist shot a thankful smile to Grant before turning to look at the Captain. Wordlessly, she walked toward him and didn't stop until she was a few feet away from him, enough distance to have a semi-private conversation. She nipped the inside of her cheek before she spoke to him. "Sergeant Kelly advised me to stick with you during the mission. Is that alright?" Her green eyes gazed over the man's face, taking in the details that were almost unnoticeable, and then gazed down to the notepad and pen that was still in her hand. She tucked it into the pocket of her parka and then looked back at James. "Is there anything in particular you'd like me to do during the mission?"

    ALEXANDRA KRIEGER

After a few minutes of browsing through the assignment details and googling different questions in search of answers for assignments for her medical class while waiting for her pen pal to reply, the notification finally popped up on her laptop. The first six words drew a small chuckle from her, along with a small smile. Of course she would forget all about the time difference between Germany and Japan and end up emailing this woman in the middle of the night. She was definitely kept on her toes throughtout reading the entire email. The typos which were a result of being drunk had the blonde woman smiling a bit. This girl is quite the character, she thought as she read through her interests and likes.

Another chuckle was pulled from her as she continued to read through the email, which ultimately earned her a "shhh!" and a dirty look from the man in front of her, who seemed to be in the middle of writing his own email. Alexandra gave him a thumbs up and mouthed an apology in German before returning her gaze to her computer screen. Soon, her fingers were flying across her keyboard as she typed a reply that the woman in Japan most likely wouldn't see until hours later whenever she woke up from her drunken sleep.

    Hana,

Your mess of an email had me chuckling in class and resulted in me getting a dirty look from the guy sitting in front of me. Thank you for helping me get on someone's nerves this morning. But seriously, I hope you don't have that much of a headache whenever you wake up. That would suck.

I have tons of pictures of Max! I'll attach one to the end of the email for you to see. Speaking of pets, do you have any pictures of Momo? On the other hand, snakes are very interesting and very beautiful animals (especially if their scales are iridescent. I love it). Before going vegetarian, a meal that my family and I ate daily was smoked eel. It's expensive and deadly if not prepared the right way, but definitely worth the risk and the money. Now, I just stick to vegetables which aren't very abnormal at all.

Yes, I have been outside of Germany! My grandparents moved to Warsaw, which is in Poland, two years ago. I fly out every few months to visit them. Since German and English are the only languages I can speak, I heavily rely on them to translate into Polish for me.

    From, Ali

P.S. Here's the photo of Max. I'm the woman hugging him.

    maxandi.jpeg

Ali then sent the email and checked the time before closing her laptop. It was saturday and this was her only weekend class. She wouldn't be needed back at the university until Monday morning. Just a few more minutes and she would be home bound. The blonde pulled out her smartphone and opened the groupchat between Otto and Adelaide, shooting them a quick text and asking if they wanted to hang out at her apartment for a while before exiting out of her messages. Then, after about twenty seconds of hesitation, Alexandra opened her email app and made sure that her school email, the email she was using to speak with Hana, was logged in on the app. It was, of course, and Ali made sure that the notifications for that app were on. She was enjoying the conversation that her and Hana were having and couldn't wait for a reply from the older woman.

    ERIN O'CONNOR

With Lucette's response, she opened the package of the citrus cubes and placed two into the wax burner, which was conveniently fast at heating up. Erin opened the drawer on her bedside table and placed the rest of the packages inside before closing it and throwing the now empty citrus package away. She climbed back onto the bed and grabbed her smartphone, sending Samuel a quick text about already being unpacked and ready to start her college journey. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Lucette strip down and change into pajamas and her heart went into her throat, her cheeks growing a bit pink. Although the two may have gotten off on the wrong foot, it didn't mean that the older girl wasn't attractive.

Erin's attention was drawn away from the other blonde in the room as she felt her phone vibrate against her hand, signifying Samuel's quick response. She thought about her reply before texting him back and even mentioning her crazy meeting with her roommate. That would get him rolling. She hadn't noticed that Lucette was actually looking in her direction, more specifically at the decorations that she had put up on her wall, until the cheerleader asked her a question.

"Hmm? Oh, no, I haven't." At the mention of the map hanging on the wall, Erin turned around to look at it herself before continuing her explanation. "Most of them are places that I want to go to. I've been to Puerto Rico and Cozumel, Mexico, but those were just for family trips at resorts. I want to actually experience the culture and architecture. Y'know, all the history and nerdy stuff," she answered before turning back to look at Lucette. "Have you travelled a lot?"

    ERIN O'CONNOR

Erin raised her brows a bit at the response. Travelling all over Asia? To say that she was a little jealous may have been an understatement. "That must have been pretty cool, though," she said with a small smile. She pulled a throw blanket she had brought from home up onto the bed and covered her legs with it, attempting to chase off the small chill she had just gotten. The blonde freshman watched as Lucette checked her phone and typed away on the screen. Probably messaging some of her friends, she thought. Erin looked up and observed the pictures on Lucette's wall, taking in the small details per usual.

Once more, Lucette's voice brought her out of her thoughts. "Yeah. His name is Samuel. He's a photographer in New York," she said. Samuel was pretty cool and definitely her best friend. He was the first person that she came out to, the first person that she always tells all of her gossip to, the first person that she cries to and seeks advice from. Long story short, he's just her person. Samuel had been with her since day one, literally. He was her rock through thick and thin, and she was his, just how it always had been. "It seems you're pretty close with the other girls on the cheerleading squad," Erin pointed out, looking at the pictures hanging on Lucette's wall. They all seemed close, like a family. It was pretty cool, or at least that's what Erin thought.

The blonde texted her brother back before returning her attention across the room to Lucette. After a small moment of silence in the room, she spoke. "I'm kind of glad that we're working past how we met because otherwise, this entire year would be so awkward," she said, her voice quiet enough you could almost call it mumbling, though she was sincere.

    ALEXANDRA KRIEGER

"Take that!" was one of the first things Ali heard once she got back to her apartment from getting a pizza with Adelaide. Unsurprisingly, Otto was sitting on her couch, his elbows on his knees and his hands holding the Playstation 4 controller. Per usual, Fortnite was on her screen. Max was lying on the other end of the couch, his ears perked as he was watching Otto attempt to kick ass. "Again?" Adelaide asked as she walked toward the couch, sitting between Otto and Max. Ali simply chuckled as she made her way to the kitchen, placing the hot pizza box on the counter. "We have the pizza, Otto," she announced as she made her way toward the couch as well. She simply stood beside Otto's end, her arms crossed across her chest as she watched her older brother run across the map in an attempt to find more players to kill. "One second, Alex," he grunted.

Alex smiled and watched on for a few seconds before turning her attention to her dog, who was happily wagging his tail as Adelaide scratched his head, hitting all of the right spots that his back claws couldn't reach whenever he scratched himself. Walking behind the couch to Max's end, the blonde leaned over the back of the couch and planted a kiss on top of his muzzle, which earned her a small lick to the cheek. It was rather adorable. Suddenly, the semi-quietness of the apartment vanished as Otto was eliminated and his sudden outburst filled the room. Adelaide busted into a fit of giggles while Otto's face turned beet red from frustration. "I was so close, Addy! You don't understand!" Laughing, Ali turned on her heel and made her way back to the kitchen, patting Otto on his shoulder as she passed by his side of the sofa. "Next time, Otto, next time."

The trio filed into the kitchen and sat down on the black stools at the island, Adelaide quickly opening the pizza box and being the first to grab a slice, shortly followed by Alexandra and Otto. As they all began to chow down on their 9 pm dinner, Adelaide filled the silence by asking Ali what she had done during her business class today. It made Ali want to laugh, if she were being honest. Adelaide was only eighteen yet she was asking so many questions that there mother always asked whenever they got home from school. Swallowing the bite of veggie pizza she had in her mouth, she spoke. "Well, since the university partnered with another university in Japan, we were given the assignment of messaging a pen pal from that university. We're supposed to talk about the assignments given in class and stuff but all my pen pal and I have done so far is get to know each other. A man in front of me turned around and hushed me because my pen pal, Hana, was unbelievably drunk whenever she replied and her email made me laugh more than once. She's nice and the assignment is pretty cool, so I think this half of the semester might be as easy as they come," she answered.

Alexandra watched as Otto stuffed another bite of pizza into his mouth, probably rushing so he could get back to playing another match. Adelaide, on the other hand, was listening intently to what she had to say. She did ask the question, after all. "That sounds super fun, Alex! You'll have to tell her I said hello!" Ali chuckled but agreed. About an hour later, everyone had showered and were all in their pajamas. Adelaide had already fallen asleep in Alex's bed along with Max, whereas Otto was playing Fortnite once again and Alex was at her favorite place in the apartment: on the balcony. The blonde was watching the cars pass by underneath her while she sipped on a mug of hot tea, attempting to cool down and relax after her day was coming to a close. She was about to head inside and climb into the bed with Adelaid and Max whenever her phone chimed. Grabbing the smartphone, which had been face down on the round dining table, Ali flipped it over and looked at the notification.

1 email from Hana Sumeragi: Pen pal assignment.

Surprisingly to Alex, her heart picked up its speed as she unlocked her phone with her fingerprint. She brought down her notification screen and clicked on the email alert. What time was it in Japan, anyway? Did Hana feel okay after her night out? You barely know this girl and you're already concerned over her well being. Congrats, Alex, here's another thing for you to worry about other than Fynn attempting to crawl back to you, she thought. The twenty two year-old opened the email, quickly reading through it with a smile on her face that grew larger once she reached the photos. She clicked on the first one, expecting to see a picture of Momo as a kitten, but instead she got the package deal. Here Hana was, a tiny Momo resting on top of her head, but here Hana was.

Her heart jumped to her throat. This woman was incredibly beautiful and definitely not what she had been expecting at all. She stared at the picture for about a minute more, taking in the small details of the woman she was currently emailing. She was astonishingly, inhumanly attractive and Alex couldn't help but nip the inside of her cheek to get herself to snap out of it. She exited out of the picture and clicked on the next one, which was a more grown Momo, who was incredibly cute and adorable. Once Ali exited out of that photograph, she began typing her response.

    Hana,

I have to say that first and foremost, you are incredibly beautiful. Definitely had me a bit starstruck if we're being honest here. Secondly, Momo is so adorable! I just want to wrap her up and cuddle her! Also, the compliment definitely made me blush, so kudos to you.

Poland is very beautiful! It's one of my favorite places, though I do have much more to see before I could say that. I've never been to Korea, England or America before. How are they? Nice and beautiful, I'm hoping, because they're definitely on my bucket list.

It's currently 10:46 pm here in Frankfurt. My brother and sister are staying with me for the weekend as they usually do. We never pass up on hanging out. I feel like I'm going to be hearing nothing but Adelaide's snoring and Otto attempting to get his first win on Fortnite all night long. Therefore, I'm on the balcony right now and getting some peace and quiet before I enter the warzone.

Oh, and for your hangover, try drinking some warm tea. That usually helps me, along with some ibuprofen.

    From, Ali.

Alexandra glimpsed over the email in her poor attempt at proofreading before she clicked send. She placed her phone back down on the table once again, but this time with the face upward so she would be able to see the notification if Hana replied before she decided to go to sleep. She didn't have much to do tomorrow anyhow, so who knows whenever she would eventually decide that she needed to sleep. Needless to say, Ali's small smile didn't leave her lips until minutes later.

    ERIN O'CONNOR

It was easy to say that Erin wasn't surprised by his bluntness. She had expected it, in fact. The stereotypical war machine was always blunt, straight to the point and didn't care about almost anyone's feelings. Erin had a feeling that this was one of those particular situations. The blonde simply raised her brow but didn't fire anything back. Now wasn't the time to hash out differences. Instead, she stepped back and watched him prepare for the mission that they were about to embark on. The journalist watched as a small curl of James' hair wormed its way out from underneath his hood and curled against his forehead, and watched as he checked his gun over.

She listened carefully as James spoke to his team in what she assumed was Russian. Next thing she knew, the men were exiting the tent and she took James' words to heart. She was definitely going to stay as close and quiet as possible. This wasn't her type of thing and she didn't want to take a bullet, or worse, get killed. Erin listened to his rant, silently agreeing that the general made a poor decision. She didn't want to be here anymore than how much James wanted her gone. She watched as he turned and exited the tent that they were currently inside, and she followed him, grabbing the pack that Grant had given her before exiting. She took wider steps than usual to stay as close behind him as she could, pulling the snow white hood of her parka over her head. Most of the loose strands of her hair that weren't tucked into the hood of her parka flew around with the cold wind and snow, causing her to tuck most of the strands behind her ear although that didn't help for the most part. The only thing that stood out against the stark white snow was the contrasting red lipstick on her lips.

Whenever James suddenly crouched down, she dropped down to a crouch as quickly as she could. She had no idea why he was doing it, but there wasn't time to ask questions. Plus, even if she did, she had a feeling that she would get either ignored or whisper-yelled at. Do what he does and you'll be fine, she thought to herself as she continued to follow him. She knew that he knew exactly what she was doing. Men on his level of alertness and expert almost never failed, and she knew that he was one to be alert with his surroundings. They all were. With that knowledge in mind, she attempted to follow his simple directions in order to not be chewed out later.

Erin looked at James as he spoke to his team through the earpieces. The conversations were short, to the point and basically just commands and confirmations. The mission was startling tight and neat that Erin knew that they had been planning this raid for a while. James broke her out of her thoughts whenever he looked over his shoulder, her green eyes locking with his as he jerked his head toward the village. Erin stood and followed closely after him, and definitely wasn't surprised at all whenever the villagers began screaming and running from them. If she saw a man coming toward her who looked exactly like James did at the moment, she would have definitely ran as well. The duo were moving fast as they made their way through the eastern quadrant of the village.

After searching two houses, Erin heard James speak into the earpiece. According to the captain's directions, their target had been spotted and was apparently trying to flee. She had a feeling that Grant wouldn't let him get to where he was trying to go, though. The duo made their way back outside into the frozen winter. The ice crystals and snowflakes brushing against her face made her cheeks and nose red and numb. She sniffed as discreetly as she could, her nose beginning to run just a tad from being in the harsh weather for so long.

As they began walking faster toward their destination, Erin looked back at the clearly upset little girl that was sobbing from fear and she instantly felt a pang of guilt in her chest. There was nothing that could be done to comfort the child, and even if there was, it wasn't like she would be able to stop and do it. She watched as the kid ran off after watching them, most likely in search of her parents. Erin nipped the inside of her cheek as she focused back on what was happening in front of her, or more like in front of James. People were still scattering, rushing and scrambling to get out of their path. Most of the looks they were receiving from the villagers were full of nothing but fear, but there were some who were staring with both fear and anger in their eyes -- a deadly combination. Needless to say, it made her want to grab the back of James' white jacket in search of some sort of comfort. Would these people attack them if they felt it would drive them away?

    ALEXANDRA KRIEGER

The fall breeze that began to blow while she awaited a reply from Hana gave her a chill, which led to her inevitably walking inside and grabbing the throw blanket off of the back of the sofa. She snuck a glance at the television screen and then toward Otto, who was still hooked on the game. "Don't stay up too late, Otto. You already know Addy is going to wake us up right as soon as the sun comes up," she said softly, watching him as he nodded in acknowledgement, finding a stopping point long enough to give her a mock salute before continuing.

She gave a small, soft smile to her older brother, her best friend, before walking back out onto the balcony and reclaiming her seat. This time, she pulled her legs into the seat with her and pulled the blanket up to her chest, leaving her arms over it so she would be able to grab her phone once Hana replied. Waiting for the Japanese woman gave Ali time to think over some things that had been bothering her lately. Fynn, her ex, had texted her the other day, apologizing for his behavior before they had split. It had been a nasty breakup, both of them clearly upset that things didn't work out how they wanted them to. In all honesty, the blonde was still a bit upset over it even though it happened three months ago. That's still two years of my life gone into the trash, she thought.

Fynn had texted her with the typical "I miss you" text that always got people hooked back on their exes, and Ali, much to Otto's dismay, had messaged him back. The text wasn't as straight to the point as Fynn's had been, but it was obvious in the tones that the feeling was mutual for her as well. And though it was, that didn't mean that she would jump right back into what had been a toxic relationship. She respected herself more than that.

Alexandra was brought out of her haze by the tell-tale ding of her phone. She reached for it, grinning when she saw the email notification from Hana. She eagerly opened the email after unlocking her phone and quickly read through it. As usual, a smile appeared as she read through it. Her smiling while reading Hana's responses was becoming quite the routine after such a short time.

After reading what Hana's question was about her current view, she looked up from her phone. How would she be able to put it into words? It was simply a good city view that would usually give you chills and good vibes if it were in a movie. Then, Ali came up with an idea. She clicked the home button on her phone and switched over to her camera app, switching it over to video. She turned the camera around so it was front-facing before she hit the record button. "Hey, Hana!" She gave a small wave to the camera and flashed a big smile before continuing, her German accent thick and heavy as she spoke. "I wasn't sure how to describe the view so I thought it would be better to just record it and email it back," she started, her head tilting the usual way it does, almost unnoticeable, whenever she's interested or focusing hard on something. Wordlessly, the blonde clicked the button at the bottom of the screen and the camera flipped toward the city lights. Her apartment was on the more elevated side of the city, so she got a great view of the city lights and nightlife. She also lived across the bridge and in the more suburban area, per say, so not only were the lights from the skyscrapers illuminating the streets below them, but they were also reflecting beautifully off of the water. "This is the view that I have. Pretty great, right?" she asked as she turned the camera slowly to capture the entire view. "I think so," she mumbled before flipping the camera around to face her once again. "Well, there you have it. The indescribable view," she said, ending the video with a bright smile. After recording the video, the blonde woman began typing her response.

    Hana,

I'm sure you still look good, so no worries. Messiness can be cute sometimes.

All three of those places sound fascinating and beautiful! I'd love to see some of the pictures you have some time. I've heard English people speak before and you're right, they do have beautiful accents. I kind of wish I had theirs instead of the one I have while speaking English.

Where do you work? I have a job as a part-time phlebotomist at one of the hospitals here in Frankfurt. I took some courses that my high school offered and got certified then instead of having to do it all on my own time. It was a pretty great opportunity and the job gives me a bit of experience in a hospital, which will look good on my resume whenever I decide to apply to med school. Plus, drawing blood can be kind of fun sometimes!

I've played Fortnite with Otto once or twice before. I wish I get to see him more often during the week, but he's a traveling photographer and goes all over the country just to take pictures that some clients want. I wouldn't be surprised if he got picked up by National Geographic or a modeling agency. He's really good at what he does! He takes pictures of me all the time.

As for the view, I attached a video at the bottom because I can't find the right words to describe it. It's a pretty cool view.

As for your hangover, I hope you feel better soon. :)

    ALEXANDRA KRIEGER

( i’m mobile right now so my post may be shorter than they’ve been lol. hana is so adorable oh my god i love her so much )

After sending the email, Alexandra decided that she had spent enough time on the balcony. The temperature was beginning to drop even more than it had and the breeze that she had previously been enjoying was now causing her to shiver. The blanket and the cardigan she was wearing over her pajamas just weren’t cutting it anymore. She stood from the chair she was sitting in, pulling the blanket from her lap and wrapping it around her shoulders before she grabbed her phone. Wordlessly, the blonde walked back into her apartment, closing the sliding glass door that led to the balcony and flipping the lock. Otto had turned all of the lights off, including the lamps that were strategically scattered around the room. The only things illuminating the area was the TV and their cellphones. The whole situation reminded her of the summer breaks during high school. They would always pile up on the sofa and watch TV or play video games until the sun came up. Now, it was more or less the same, they just went to bed earlier.

Ali made her way to the sofa and plopped down onto the large white cushion, bringing her legs up underneath her and curling into the blanket in a poor attempt to ward off the chill she had received from the balcony. She watched as Otto’s character ran around the map, collecting loot and materials in a battle to be the best during the match. Her eyes drifted over to her brother, who was so focused on the game that she didn’t even know if he realized she had come in and settled onto the sofa with him. She shook her head with a soft smile before returning her attention to her phone. She clicked the home button to light the lock screen up, squinting whenever she was met with brightness. As quickly as she could, she turned the brightness all the way down.

She was eager to see what Hana’s next reply was going to contain. Probably more typos, she thought with a humorous smile. It was quite endearing, to say the least. To pass the time, she opened up her solitaire app, throwing herself into the card game with the determination to win. Not even ten minutes later, a notification slid down from the top of her screen, and Alex’s face lit up.

1 email from Hana Sumeragi: Pen pal assignment.

Alexandra doesn’t think she’s ever clicked on a notification so fast in her entire life. She happily read through the email, and most definitely felt her heart thud harder than it had been under her breast as she read the last line. Who would’ve guessed that I would be partnered with such a charmer, she thought, purposefully ignoring the heat of an obvious blush filling her cheeks. She didn’t waste any time in typing out her reply.

    Hana,

You’re quite the charmer, aren’t you? Making a girl blush twice in one day must be a habit of yours.

Don’t worry about the pictures! I can go without until you have time to send them. It would probably be best to wait until I can actually visit those places in person anyway. Much more memorable that way. As for my accent, you’re way too sweet. I’m honestly thinking that you’re attempting to woo me with all of the compliments you keep sending my way (though there aren’t any complaints coming from me).

Software engineering sounds fun! It must be nice to work from home. If I did that, I think I wouldn’t get anything done other than lay in bed and binge a good show on Netflix. My job usually consists of drawing blood from patients, bringing it to the lab and testing it to see what the patient’s illness is. It can get frustratingly complicated sometimes, but I love it.

Out of curiousity, how is the weather in Japan right now? Is it as cold there as it is here? I’m wrapped up in a cardigan and a blanket on my sofa with the heat turned almost all the way up and I’m still freezing! Fall/winter may be my favorite seasons but that definitely doesn’t mean that I enjoy shivering my ass off lol. What’s your favorite season?

    From, Ali.

The young German woman proofread the email like she usually did before hitting “send”. She watched the little blue bar slowly go across the screen as it delivered, and then locked her phone once it actually did deliver. With that, Alex sunk further down into the sofa and turned her attention to the television screen, watching as Otto attempted to fight off enemies.

    ALEXANDRA KRIEGER

( oh you're right about the fynn thing! i've been thinking of little subplots to spice up the thread a little bit, but so far i've come up short. i know i want to do something with alex's ex though considering that their split wasn't that long ago. )

Alex was very close to falling asleep on the couch whenever Otto's mini celebration woke her up. The blonde sent a glare in his direction, though it got ignored by the brunette man as he pumped his fist in the air. The sleepy blonde looked toward the television and, sure enough, Otto had finally gotten his first win while playing solo. While Otto was happy and celebrating, Ali was annoyed and sleepy. The blonde stood from her spot on the sofa, letting the blanket fall onto the cushion as she grabbed her cellphone off of the coffee table. "I'm going to sleep, Otto. Goodnight," she said softly, ruffling his hair as she walked passed him and made her way to the bed that was on the other side of the apartment.

As soon as Ali reached the bed, she pulled the comforter and sheets back and climbed in, gently nudging Max aside and pushing him toward the middle of the bed rather than leaving him in her spot. She wriggled a bit as she struggled to find a comfortable position, but kept in mind that her little sister was next to her, so she attempted to not move as much as she usually would. Finally finding a comfortable position, Alex reached for the cord of her phone charger, which was conveniently placed on her bedside table, and plugged in her phone. Unsurprisingly, right as soon as she was about to lock the device, an email from Hana came through. The next notification that arrived, however, shocked her a bit.

The next notification wasn't an email, but rather a text, and from a particular person that she had no desire to speak to at the moment: Fynn. With a bit of hesitation, her thumb hovering over the two notifications, Ali swiped on Fynn's, deleting the alert. She would speak to him later. Now, she clicked on Hana's notification. She read through the email, genuinely interested in what the older woman had to say. As usual, a smile graced her lips as she read the second sentence, along with the last four sentences of the first smile. It was an understatement to say that her heart was beating wildly. Without a second thought, she began to write her response.

    Hana,

I'm actually planning on visiting my grandparents in Poland again during our winter break in a few weeks! I'm definitely looking forward to seeing them and the country again. It's been way too long. A country that I would love to go to would definitely be Greenland. It's snowy, full of mountains and just my cup of tea. Although I prefer to live in a city, I definitely love nature and will take any opportunity to explore it. (I'm in a secret relationship with Mother Nature. I've exposed myself, oops.)

This doesn't feel much like an assignment to me at all anymore, either! I feel like I'm catching up with an old friend and I'm having fun getting to know you. Whenever my professor told the class about the assignment, I was expecting awkward, forced conversations about foreign business that were just painful to read, but this is definitely much better!

I'm hooked on Orange Is The New Black right now! I'm not sure if it's on Japan's Netflix, but it is on Germany's. It's definitely gotten me hooked and I think I'm in love with Alex Vause. A powerful, dominant and beautiful woman? Sign me up.

I love challenges, actually! I'm always running around the hospital and trying to figure out ways to make my job much more challenging than necessary, but it keeps me on my toes. It's definitely helping me prepare for med school, that's for sure!

It's 5° celsius here, and I'm freezing. Spring is really nice here as well! People go around the city planting and watering flowers and shrubs. It gives Frankfurt more life and helps draw the community closer together. Plus, whenever you walk down the sidewalk, all you smell is flowers. It's pretty great.

"A picture won't do it justice, you have to see for yourself?" Hmm, is this an invitation to come to Japan? I may have to take you up on it some time.

    From, Alex.

P.S. Since we're getting so close, I may as well give you my number. Emailing a friend is getting a bit old, don't you think?

Ali left her cellphone number at the end of the email, hoping that it wasn't a bit too forward. Although they had just met a few hours prior to now, she felt as though the friendship that was brewing between them wasn't just going to end once the assignment was over. She had a feeling that she was going to want to keep in touch with Hana, and giving her her number was the best way to achieve that. Plus, it would be easier to message her back considering the fact that she didn't need internet in order to text someone. She quickly hit "send" before she decided to delete her number and let out a quick but quiet sigh. Now, she was left with one decision: open Fynn's text message and reply or not open it, go to sleep and deal with it whenever she woke up in the morning. Biting the inside of her cheek, Ali locked her phone and sat it down on her bedside table before rolling over and closing her eyes.

    ALEXANDRA KRIEGER

( i will, love! i was just thinking up some things before i sent them in c: )

The blonde grunted in surprise whenever she felt a hand smack down onto the center of her back. “Alex, your phone,” she heard coming from the left of her. The blonde’s eyes didn’t open once as she grunted again. Once more, she was met with a slap to her back. “Alex, it won’t stop vibrating. Who are you friends with that’s awake at 3 am?” Adelaide asked, almost completely awake now. “Just go back to sleep,” Alex mumbled, her words slurring together as sleep began to take over her again. This time, she wasn’t met with slap, but with silence. Finally. I feel like I’m raising a toddler sometimes, she thought. She felt the mattress wiggle underneath her and assumed that Adelaide was just trying to find a comfortable position, but the next thing she knew, Addy was lying over her back and reaching for her phone. Alex whined in protest. All I want to do is sleep, dammit.

The blonde considered letting Adelaide look over her phone for her, but whenever she heard the quiet “some weird number keeps texting you,” her eyes shot open. She completely forgot that she had sent her phone number to Hana! Alex’s head turned to look at the phone screen as she tried to dislodge her arm from underneath Adelaide. Succeeding a couple seconds later, she reached out and snagged the phone from her baby sister’s hand. “Hey! I was reading that.” Alex ignored her sister’s protests and felt the younger girl move so she was still lying on top of Alex’s back, but with her head pressed against hers to continue reading the messages and watch Alex respond to them.

The blonde quickly read through Hana’s messages after unlocking her phone and began typing away, purposefully ignoring Adelaide’s breathing in her ear.

3:27 AM: Hey! It’s fine, don’t worry too much about it. I fell asleep after I replied lol. I actually found the typos somewhat endearing, so it’s ok.

3:28 AM: I love Alex with my entire heart. Her and Piper are the best. I really like Lorna, too! She’s really pretty and seems like living sunshine considering she’s always happy.

3:28 AM: I’ll definitely have to plan a trip to Japan during spring break, then. Wouldn’t want to miss out :)

“You’re going to Japan?” Adelaide asked, turning her head to look at her older sister with a weird expression. Slightly annoyed, Alex turned to look at Adelaide, but was shocked whenever she felt her phone being snatched from her hands. Before she could wrestle it back, Adelaide began typing.

3:30 AM: idk if you live in Germany but it’s 3:30 in the morning here and you woke me up, lady

Adelaide inserted a mad emoji before hitting send, and that’s when Alex attempted to get her phone back, grabbing the top of it and yanking, though she was met with a lot of resistance from her sister. Unbeknownst to the both of them, the device was voice recording the entire incident of Alex yelling something in German to Adelaide while the teenager giggled endlessly. After Alex managed to get her phone back into her own hands, the recording had already sent but she didn’t care about that. Quickly, her thumbs flew across the touchscreen keyboard.

3:33 AM: I’m so sorry about that. That was Adelaide. Ignore her.

    ERIN O'CONNOR

“That’s sweet. I bet you guys are always having fun and messing around all the time,” she said with a small smile easily growing on her face. She had had her own group of friends during high school, and surprisingly, they weren’t all nerds. She had friends from various cliques, a strange array if we were to be honest. She was friends with people from the preps, hoods, jocks, nerds, emos and even some cheerleaders. Needless to say, whenever the entire squad hung out together, there was never a dull moment.

A small smile spread across Erin’s face as Lucette laughed and responded. She nodded in agreement before responding. “Exactly. I’d rather be on civil terms with my roommate than receive dirty looks all year long,” she said with a small smile. She fiddled with the phone in her hand before laying it down beside her. To avoid the awkward silence that was beginning to fill the room, Erin spoke once again. “So, do you have any siblings?”

    ALEXANDRA KRIEGER

( it’s fine, hun! i’ve been thinking about the fynn side plot thing and it would be totally cliche but how about he starts to come back into her life little by little and whenever she realizes she has feelings for hana (maybe while they’re finally hanging out in person?), he decides to show up out of nowhere and tries to woo her or something idk. like, hana could come visit alex in frankfurt and she’s showing hana around and everything and they accidentally meet fynn while alex is showing her the city and he’s decided that that’s the perfect time to get her to go on a date with him and to “pick up where they left off” or whatever. idk what i’m saying lol )

By the time Hana texted her back, Adelaide had already rolled off of her and back to her side of the bed. Surprisingly, both Max and Otto had slept through the entire ordeal. “Alex?” The blonde, who was propped up on her elbows, looking through her Twitter feed, turned to look at her younger sister. “Hmm?” Adelaide rolled over so she was facing Alex. “Can we go get some food?” Of course she wants food. “I can cook you something. Come on,” she said as she forced herself to roll out of her bed, yawning as she made her way to her kitchen with her phone clutched in her hand. Before she began pulling ingredients out, she read the texts that Hana had sent her.

3:39 AM: It’s alright, and yes, she’s my sister (sadly). I probably won’t be going back to sleep anytime soon since Adelaide decided to slap my back to wake me up. Now she has me slaving in the kitchen for her.

“Hana said she’s sorry for waking you up, by the way,” Alex mumbled as Addy sat down in the stool at the island counter. “She better be,” the young girl grumbled. It would have come off pouty and angry if it weren’t for the small smile that spread across her face. Alex looked back at her phone, taking the time to save Hana’s number into her contacts before typing out another message.

3:42 AM: What are you up to right now?

She sent the message and locked her phone, still ignoring the notification from Fynn’s message. Despite how bad she wanted to read what he had to say, she placed her phone onto the counter and returned to what she was planning on doing earlier: cooking for Adelaide. She pulled out the carton of eggs and a few vegetables that she always puts in Addy’s favorite omelette. The blonde grabbed the skillet that was hanging from the hook against the wall above the stove and set it down on one of the burners, heating it up so it would be ready to cook by the time she got finished messing with the ingredients. She cracked the two eggs that she grabbed from the carton into the bowl that she pulled down from the cabinet above the counter and whipped them until the yolks were beaten, and then she began cutting the various veggies. Afterward, she added the freshly cut vegetables to the eggs in the bowl and mixed them together before sprinkling a bit of cheese into it.

“Can you put up the eggs and cheese?” Alex asked. Adelaide got up from her seat and grabbed the ingredients, putting them back into the refrigerator. She grabbed a plate out of one of the cabinets and set it down on the counter next to the stove for Alex. A few minutes later and Alex had slid the omelette out of the skillet and onto the plate. She grabbed a fork out of the small drawer beside the stove and turned around, placing the plate in front of Adelaide, who was sitting in her seat. The younger girl began to dig in while Alex grabbed her phone again, leaning heavily against the island counter.

Wordlessly, she finally clicked on the message from Fynn.

YESTERDAY, 11:56 PM: Ich denke, wir haben einen Fehler gemacht. Ich habe über unsere Beziehung nachgedacht und würde es gerne noch einmal versuchen. Treffen Sie mich morgen früh in unserem Café? Xx *

Alex quietly scoffed at the text. I don’t think so, buddy. Although she was curious as to what he had to say for himself, she didn’t want to get herself caught back in a relationship with him. It had been a toxic one and she definitely wasn’t looking for a relationship like that again. Maybe I’ll go just to see what he has to say. I could use an apology from him.

    * = I think we made a mistake. I’ve given some thought to our relationship and would like to try again if you're willing. Meet me at our favorite coffee shop tomorrow morning? Xx
