history: jemima bean was born in salem, Massachusetts on a rainy day in april. her parents were joyed to have her, believing that their first born child would grow to do great things. jemima, in turn, was a joy to have around, she was quite adventurous, and generally fun to be around. but, on the contrary, she could also make life a living hell for her parents. if she didn't get her way, she learned that screaming and crying would give her what she wanted. once the effect of that wore off, it was typically throwing things in an ugly tantrum. after that, it was angry outbursts and locking herself in her room. after that, it was personal attacks against her parents and others.
hurting people wasn't something that bean had ever completely intended, it was something that she just did. she often lashed out at others, which made her easy to hate. she was sarcastic toward her parents and her peers, and often found that aggression was something to turn to rather than sorting out her problems with peace. she was difficult to deal with, and people often met her attitude with fire, often causing a blow up.
her parents didn't keep her to be social, and often sent her away to the arcade or some other activity during large house parties. so, going to school wasn't particularly the easiest for her. the amount of students had overwhelmed her, and in her first year alone, she had gotten into a total of fifteen physical fights. her expulsion was often considered, but her parent's wealth often forced the school to keep her.
jem first noticed her interest in girls in her second year. at this point, she had slightly calmed down, and found friends that she could hang out with and not threaten upon sight. she noticed that girls had a specific beauty to them that she couldn't see in any of her male friends, a certain grace, an aspect of their appearance, maybe? one of her friends, in particular, had a quality to them that she liked. she often felt protective around the girl, and adored every bit of her movements.
on the day before christmas break, that friend in particular expressed the same interest, and took the opportunity of leading bean underneath a mistletoe so she could kiss her. unfortunately, this didn't go as planned, ending with bean having tripped over a log and face planting in the snow. it worked out however, and the girl helped her up and brushed the snow off of her lips, kissing her anyway. this was the start of a long relationship between the two.
on the christmas break of their fourth year that meant the most to her. her parents decided that they were taking a getaway trip to california for christmas without her, so bean would just have to stay at salem. deciding against that, she asked her girlfriend if she could come over for break. she said yes, and jem had the most memorable christmas of her life. as her girlfriend was muggleborn, it was a fairly "no magic" time, which allowed jem to become affiliated with muggle culture, and while she knew her parents wouldn't enjoy hearing about it, she didn't mind, as she enjoyed muggle culture and embraced it. it was fun, featuring lots of snowball fights, hot chocolate, and kissing. on the exchange of presents, jem recieved an item that she still holds precious to this day, a beanie with the words "jemima beanie" sewn in on the back.
a week after she returned home from the trip, jem wrote her parents a letter, explaining her interest in girls and how she was never straight and probably could never be. her parents reply came soon after, stating how they were always going to love her no matter what, but it was best not to mention it around her father. she could tell that the letter was written by her mom, who sugar coated the truth as much as possible.
for weeks after that, jem was cold and angry, lashing out against others at every chance that she got. it was just like first year again, and she lost those close to her. her girlfriend had decided that a break was the best for them, as "she couldn't date a ticking time bomb." the summer after that, her parents informed her that they were moving to scotland so she could have a better education and they could have better paying jobs.
bean was transferred to hogwarts, where she finished the rest of her education career. she remained the aggressive person that she was, until she graduated. her parents knew how skilled she was in magic, defense against the dark arts specifically, and knew that her determined attitude would help her in perusing an auror position. however, she didn't want to hear what her parents had to say, and instead decided to settle for working a waitress job, and singing in muggle coffee shops. she lived in a little apartment in a village off of london, and was quite content with her life, up until her rent prices were jacked up and she could no longer afford it.
it was at this point that she heard there was an opening at the school of hogwarts, and decided to apply, mostly for the benefits, but she had always had a knack for defense against the dark arts, so this would be a good opportunity to exercise those talents.
