Michael Thompson was born and raised in the state of Virginia, near Richmond. As a child, he made his way through school with either B's or high C's in all of his classes. Although he made sure to keep his grades at passing level, his main focus in life was always baseball; he enjoyed playing the sport with his school teams throughout elementary and middle school.

Once his brother was born in his 6th grade year, Michael's parents made him help take care of Javon; both of their parents had two jobs, so they needed someone to care for the baby when they were gone. Of course, in their minds, Michael was the perfect candidate. He would always be home, it gave him experience with kids and would "mature" him, and he could spend quality time with his new brother to bond. Michael couldn't protest when he was told to stay home and care for Javon, so he would often miss baseball practice. When he became too busy with his school and homework, he was forced to give up baseball.

Soon enough, high school came around and Michael's friends kind of pressured him into playing basketball. His little brother was old enough so that Michael didn't have to watch him every hour of the day, so he joined the basketball team with his friends. He was never the best--baseball was the one area where he excelled--but he was sometimes chosen to be a starter in games. Michael graduated highschool after his four years and had planned to go to community college.

News slowly started coming in about attacks occurring all over the country involving cannibalism. Things got weirder and weirder until the day that these crazy killers came to Virginia. Neighbors would end up on people's doorsteps with a blank look in their eyes, groaning like zombies in horror movies. People would often open their doors to them, hoping to try and help them, but the "zombies" weren't looking for help--they were looking for food.

This fate befell Michael and Javon's parents; they had opened the door for their next door neighbor, a kind old woman named Hope with three grandsons that would come over sometimes to play. They noticed how bad she looked; her mocha skin had a sickly blue tint and sagged in places it hadn't before. Her silver hair, which was usually neatly combed and parted down the middle, was disheveled and full of dirt, and her nightgown and slippers were dirty, as if she had been walking outside in the woods. They invited her in, but once the door opened, the sweet old lady-turned zombie attack the two, biting and scratching them both on the chest. The brothers had been in the eldest brother's room playing a video game when they heard their parents scream outside. They ran out to see blood on the floor along with their parents holding the door closed and Hope scrambling to enter once more. The boys watched in shock as their father, George, slammed the large door shut and locked the deadbolt. Michael pushed Javon back, asking his parents what was wrong with their sweet neighbor that would bake them pies and give out little hard candies on Friday afternoons. They were all shocked and had no answers, so they went back into the house and locked all the doors and windows. They kept the TV on all day and night so they could get the latest news.

Information about a new disease had been released, telling people to stay away from anyone with the illness. Anyone with a slow walk, made groaning sounds, had clouded, blank eyes, or a disheveled appearance was most likely infected. The reports said that those that came in contact with the infected became sick, died, then came back to life with the same cloudy eyes as their attacker. The news reporters instructed anyone not sick to pack up and go to the nearest shelter. There, the people would be safe and out of harms reach (or so they say).

The Thompson parents knew they would probably end up like Hope; they had a high fever and they were spitting up blood constantly. They knew they didn't have much time, so they forced their children to lock them in their bedroom. Their father told them to gather supplies around the house and head to the shelter in Washington D.C. Michael and Javon followed their father's orders and they both collected all the food in the pantry and water bottles in the fridge. They grabbed their school bags and dumped them out to make space for the supplies. They collected knives, the first-aid kit, flashlights, some of their dad's tools in the garage, and other helpful things they could think of.

When Michael went back to their parents' room, something was wrong; he could see their fingers under the door, but they didn't look normal. They were bloodied and the nails were worn down from scratching at the door for who knows how long. Michael knew that meant they were gone, so he got Javon and took the family car to D.C. where he hoped his little brother would be safe.
