    fucking woods.

gem had always hated the great outdoors, honestly. they still missed shadowclan's old city, full of corners and shadows that invited you in, and they'd heard stories about the territory before that. living in a ferris wheel sounded pretty damn cool, in their opinion. now, shadowclan was living in a goddamn rainforest, and as for sitri? sitri was now living in a forest so thick you could only find the actual camp if you followed a set of train-tracks.

    fucking woods. fucking scarclan.

as angry as they seemed, gem was actually just frustrated. despite all they'd been through, for some strange reason, they still felt loyalty to sitri. dare they say it, still loved him. and then he'd gone and raped his king, got tortured to the point of insanity, then moved to scarclan. fucking scarclan. "what's so special about this place, anyway?" gem mumbled as they trampled more undergrowth, searching for the train tracks that they were pretty sure were just a myth at this point. did this clan even exist? probably not. there was a good chance sitri had just disappeared into the forest to become the insane lion version of tarzan. gem kept walking.

finally, they found the train tracks, and hurried along with renewed determination, trotting down the middle of the tracks and stepping in between the wooden slats. they'd begun panting by the time they scented the unfamiliar clan, and paused for a minute to regain their breath. it was then gem realised they hadn't thought this out very well. they didn't want to get near the border for fear of complicating things and possibly freaking sitri out, but how would they find sitri out here? dammit...

suddenly, inspiration struck gem, and the cougar flicked their claws and started tracing in a nearby patch of dirt. soon, they had rendered a symbol identical to the one carved on the floor of their home back in shadowclan. that felt like forever ago, but they gave themselves no time to reminisce. this was it.

    "sitri?"

gem knew it'd hurt their heart to see sitri like this, but holy hell, they hadn't expected it to hurt this much. he looked beyond broken. he looked shattered, crushed, utterly deconstructed, like volcanic glass crunched underfoot until it was no more than powder. a powdery, powerless prince.

it was only when he fully appeared before them that gem remembered sitri had gone blind, and they cursed themselves for not planning this better. they'd summoned a blind, partially deaf, wholly insane demon, literally dragged him through hell, with no forewarning or idea of what they'd say. all for what? a fucking checkup? god, they were such an idiot. they were so- so selfish. they'd definitely just triggered his ptsd again. a wave of panic swept over the cougar as they assessed the situation properly, and saw the vacancy in sitri's eyes. they had no idea just how much of sitri's mind had been destroyed - what if he didn't remember them? oh god, what if he thought they were his torturer?

this terrible though pushed gem into action. they stumbled forward, as if in shock, and snapped their jaws open. "sitr- oof!"

they hadn't heard sitri mumble their name at first, but now his wailing was coming through loud and clear as he tackled gem. they didn't even have time to register the touch - the first in months - before the huge black lion broke away and whirled around to scream at the trees. gem was already fighting back tears. "god, what have they done to you?" they murmured, before approaching him again. as soon as they extended a paw towards him, however, sitri simply turned around and buried his face in their chest fur. gem's ears flattened, but the paw that had been intended for sitri's shoulder immediately wrapped around his shoulders instead. within seconds, they were embracing him, murmuring into his good ear in a soothing tone.

    "shh. it's okay. i'm okay. you're okay."

    nova! gem remembered nova.

"welcome back, second-most-awesome." gem greeted nova in a teasing tone as they arrived, tail swinging loosely behind them. god, how long had it been since they'd seen nova? gem didn't want to think about it too hard - it'd just make them feel old, regardless, seeing a familiar face certainly cheered them up. "welcome back, dude." they said, more genuinely. seeing nova had made them realise just how much they missed the old crowd.

just as things were starting to look up, too.

gem's initial panic had almost completely faded away when they felt the body between their front paws begin to shake. at first, gem thought sitri might be crying harder (entirely justifiable), but then they heard the laughter. fake as plastic, obviously, but the screaming that followed was genuine. gem stumbled backwards, watching the gruesome scene in front of them in mute, wide-eyed horror. not a muscle in their body moved as sitri screamed and cried and gagged and ambled forward and-

    holy shit.

gem was actually shoved backwards by the force of the kiss, though they kept their balance. the cougar had entirely forgotten how to breathe; sitri tasted like blood and desperation and his own spit and goddamn if it wasn't their favourite flavour. they'd forgotten what this felt like. all too soon, it was over, and gem heaved a breath as sitri tore away to scream some more. except... he was yelling something gem had never heard sitri say before. ever.

"HE LOVES YOU, GEMINI! HE LOVES YOU, HE LOVES YOU, HE LOVES YOU!"

the tiny, perfectly calm sector of gem's brain that never seemed to shut up pondered this awful situation. it seemed that sitri's torturers had ripped away so much of his sanity that he no longer had any inhibitions about revealing his true feelings. the shadowclanner's tears were falling freely now, accompanied by quiet, uniform sobs. this was worse than any torture. no contest. they flinched a little as sitri's claws dug beneath their fur, but as he fell to the ground again they wanted it back. at this point, excruciating pain would be a thousand times better than nothing at all. an unnattractive hiccuping snort burst out of gem's throat as they stumbled forward to where sitri's crumpled form now lay, curling up beside him and pressing themselves flush to him.

"i'm not going to die, sitri. i'm here. i'm real."

it had been a good while since gem's last... 'withdrawal', so naturally they were surrounded by faces they didn't know. as per usual, this didn't bother the cougar one bit, and they flashed small smiles to anyone they made eye contact with as they joined the group. new people, new friends, new experiences. gem embraced change.

gem approached soon after, glancing around at new and old faces alike. the cougar offered a smile to the strangers, dipped their head to radio, and came to a stop beside blacky, brushing shoulders gently with the wolf before speaking. "hey, everyone. i'm gemini, but just call me gem, because everyone does. cool to meet you guys."

holy shit i just got ninjad like 5 times in a row rip

it wasn't like gem wasn't wary of this, or a little hostile towards the newcomer, but they were pretty sure they could see the young apprentice shaking. maybe he deserved at least a chance - but then again, maybe not. enemies were enemies for a reason. the cougar glared at pointpaw, trying to assess his true motive. they didn't have much luck, but they did figure he was very misguided about shadowclan. the guy had probably been operating off a stereotype all his life. "if you want to join a clan that was born to kill, try the exiles. we're an anticlan, sure, but we're not braindead. we don't kill without reason. and we sure as hell don't kill our clanmates." they growled, though not in a completely malicious tone.

gem huffed out a breath, but for what reason they weren't sure. were they relieved he'd escaped branding, worried about this murderous newcomer joining their ranks, or amazed that radio had let him join at all? they really weren't sure. at any rate, they'd be interested to see where pointpaw went. the cougar turned to radio, tail-tip twitching. "do you want me to show him around?"

it didn't matter how many months it had been since shadowclan had moved. gem would always, always miss the city.

currently, the cougar was walking along a fallen log by the basin, using their tail to keep balanced and trying to sort through all the debris in their head. it was... a work in progress. gem flicked an ear in a vain attempt to get rid of an insect, and sighed. the damp, steamy forest air clung to the lining of their lungs, and they resisted the urge to cough. why did it have to be summer? being covered in fur sucked in the summer.

stop procrastinating, gem scolded themselves. you have stuff you need to think about. normally, gem actively tried to avoid overthinking, given it was one of their worst habits. but now, after they'd gone through maybe three periods where they'd just holed up in their room and hadn't spoken to anyone, they figured something was off. maybe, for once, the solution was a good hard think. about stuff. probably.

the ex-assassin let out another huge sigh, and flopped down into a sitting position on top of the log. honestly, they had no idea what was going on in their head, or what to do about it. it could have been any number of things - it could be that sitri was living in scarclan, driven to insanity from torture. it could be that the sea of new faces in the clan were a little more intimidating than they'd expected. maybe, despite gem's best efforts, the memories of their lost family were still picking away at their psyche like vultures. or maybe it was just a part of their personality. maybe they were just flaky.

gem unsheathed their claws and picked at the moss growing on the log. maybe they could get used to the air.

gem nodded and turned back to pointpaw, keeping their voice and expression carefully neutral. "i'll take you to camp. follow me." they instructed, after he was finished greeting everyone. with that, the cougar turned and plunged into the bushes, beckoning the apprentice with a wave of their tail.

    sorry this is late frick

gem had been spending a lot of time in the forest. not because they liked the forest - quite the opposite - but because it provided a nice place to think, given you ignored the horrifically high temperature and the insects that seemed to multiply in mid-air. it was an acquired taste, one that was taking a while for them to get used to.

the mountain lion was balancing on a log with their tail stretched out behind them when they heard the voice. it was soft, feminine,, and entirely unfamiliar, so of course gem had to make it familiar immediately. having the curiosity levels of a two-month-old kitten might have been dangerous in some situations, but there were no unfamiliar scents around and the voice sounded like it couldn't belong to anyone older than a year. still, as gem nosed through the bushes, they kept their shoulders tense; curiosity killed the cat. cougar. whatever.

ferns of all sizes grabbed at their fur, ears, tail as they moved through the undergrowth, and a particularly persistent coil of green smacked them on the nose right as they caught a glimpse of the stranger (small, pale-furred, flowers). they sneezed, then frowned. damn. gem didn't know when sneaking up on the unassuming shadowclanner had become their plan, but it was abandoned as they straightened their spine and strolled into the young cat's line of vision, taking in the flowers and connecting the dots. with a teasing gleam in their eye, gem crouched down to give the blooms a mock inspection. "you're not weak. these are some pretty intimidating flowers, man."
