IC: The blind apprentice had disappeared, at least for now. It might not be noticed quickly, seeing as all he did now was stay near his house, Sam, or Winter. Or just wandered, looking lost, blind optics downcast. Once someone did notice, however, they would probably go to his house for clues. Inside, on the floor, a slightly curled note lay. It hadn't been written by him - that would be pretty hard, considering he was blind and didn't have hands - of course, he'd gotten an NPC to write it for him a few days or so back. The script was neat and easily readable:
If someone's reading this, then that means I'm gone. I don't know if I'll die or just… disappear or something, but I figure that it'd be best to leave a note. Less worry, I guess. Actually, that's not entirely true, is it? Either way, I'm having this written just in case. So I've just got a few other things to say, to a couple of people.
Sam - I remember when I showed up at the border, you were one of the first there. You helped me. A complete and total stranger. And I remembered, Sam. I know how I got hurt now. At least, sort of. I remember being dragged away from a sibling, I think, and fighting to get out of the person's grip. And running. That's how I ended up in Windclan. And I remembered that I'd never seen kindness like that. Where I'd come from, I always got bullied because I looked different. Nobody helped anyone they didn't know there. Thank you for that. And I think you're a great leader, Sammy. I'm glad that Mum made you deputy. I love you like a sister. I wish I could've seen you, just once, holding a meeting. Or anytime recently. It's been a while since I could. In a box to the left of the doorway - when you're facing it from the inside - I've got something for you. I meant to give it to you, but never got the chance. I hope you like it, Sammy. And please, don't die before I get back. Don't put me through that again. I care about what happens to you, Sammy. I always have.
Winter - Remember when we first met? That was before Mum died, before I went totally blind. I've seen your face once, Winter, and it was blurry. And I wish every day that I could see it again. Because you're beautiful, and I could tell from that once. When I asked you out, you've got no idea just how nerve wracking that was, a little poem and a simple question. I hope that, if you're reading this, you won't forget me. Because I'll come back, I'll find a way back, I promise. Just know for now that I'm okay and I love you so much. You have no idea how much you've helped me. Like I've said, I'd never known much kindness before I came here, and you… you didn't care that I was blind, or that I was scarred and stuttered. Tha I was weak. You made me feel better about myself, and you became one of my, well, my rocks. When Mum died… welll, when Mum died, I withdrew from everyone, didn't I? And I'm sorry for that. You never stopped trying to pull me back, though. And I guess, in a way, it worked. Bloody hell, we adopted a kid. Speaking of which, is Thomas… still around? If he is, well, there's a stuffed bunny toy I got him but never gave him, beside the wall. And could you find Araneolus, and let her know, please? And in the box on the rug, there's something for you. I love you so much, Winter. Please believe that I'll be back. I'll always come back.
Everyone else I know, thank you for showing me how wrong I was, how people can be kind, can really care about others. I don't know when I'll be back, but I promise that I will.
Best wishes,
Malachite Hadrian-Xerses
Inside the small box beside the door - Sam's gift - was a charm bracelet. Only one charm dangled from it - although there were spaces for other charms to be attached - , a piece of malachite carved in the shape of a wolf. Beneath it, a handful of opals covered the bottom, all different varieties and colors.
In the box on the rug, there were a few things. On top was a small note, though not as easy to read as the letter. Instead, Malachite himself had written it, resulting in a slightly messy scrawl, although it was surprisingly good.
I was a soldier.
Obviously something else that he'd remembered. He'd been a soldier. But he had a different body, before he left. He wasn't a four month old wolf puppy when he left. He'd been over two years old, although his body had much the same as he did now, albeit with less scars. He hated the thought that he'd killed. He hated the memories of war. The blood, the violence, the noise.
Underneath that note was a charm bracelet, but instead of one charm, there were three. A wolf shaped charm made out of malachite. A heart, half crystal, half white marble. And another wolf shaped charm, facing towards the heart, carved out of white marble.
Beneath it was a small box filled with a variety of opals. On the lid, a gold inscription read Don't forget, catching the light.
And beneath that?
Was the thing he'd found along with his memory of being a soldier. Glinting silver at the bottom of the box were his dog tags. One read Malachi. The other read the same thing, but etched after the Malachi were the letters t and e, changing it to Malachite. The change was old, made before he turned into a puppy and lost his memory. That was one of the few things that had remained in his memory, the name Malachite. That and the need to run, to run as far as possible from where he was. And to never go back.
