TURNING BACK TO MY SPECIAL PLACE

    — Shaky, as always, the hyena comes up after Jace. He hadn't been in the area, as he was doing patrols on the opposite side of the territory. But seeing the crowd gathered, he figured he'd walk over and find out what the commotion was all about. His ears perked up as he heard Retro's name, followed shortly by the word taken. His heart skips two, maybe three beats as his brain tries to make sense of the words. She was... kidnapped? No, that wasn't right. That couldn't have happened. She was strong and... there was no way, no way of that happening. Who could have taken her? And why? "That's-- that can't be. Are you sure? I don't--" He swallowed thickly, looking at Jace as he speaks. Killed? His wide eyes shift slowly toward the ground, teeth grinding against each other. They were supposed to have kids... this was all supposed to be okay. And now the only thing that was keeping him from snapping had been taken away from him. Maybe he could reason with them, he had plenty of products to offer the Cartel. He knew the way, too. Hebe had shown him how to get to the Cartel long ago, and he hadn't forgotten. A low growl rumbles in his throat as he looks at the others, all speaking their part. They didn't get it. Even Jace didn't get it. "I could do that, yeah," He responds to Arya's comment, his words detached and angry. His eyes didn't shift from their position, staring at a single grain of sand. His head was full of thoughts. He needed to figure something out that would work for him. Like Jace, he never expected the Cartel's violence to affect him so personally. "I want to see every one of those fuckers burn,"

    — Speedfreak hadn't waited for any sort of raid announcement, nor did he tell the others to pack up and follow him. The moment he'd heard that Retro was taken, he packed up his things and set out. He brought everything he thought he might need, including enough drugs to kill an elephant. Navigating the path to the Cartel was difficult, and he almost got lost several times. But the distraught Speedfreak pushed on, eventually reaching the borders of the Cartel. The mansion that Hebe had shown him still stood where he remembered it, bringing forth a relieving sigh as he sat down, trying to catch his breath. He was stupid for doing this, dumb as nails. He knew that, too-- but it didn't stop him. If Retro was hurt, or killed, he wouldn't be able to forgive himself. Their kids... he wanted to see them, he wanted them to be safe this time. He promised her. Swallowing, the hyena shakily lowers his mouth to the canteen around his neck, taking a drink of water which he so desperately needed. His fur was full of twigs and dirty, but his eyes rippled with determination. "Is anyone there? I-- I'd like to bargain," He curses to himself for stumbling over his words, blaming the drugs rather than his own nervousness. Every second they waited to arrive was a second that could be spent slaughtering his girlfriend. He wasn't patient at all, and these circumstances made things ten times harder. Were they heartless? No, when he came here with Hebe he saw a friendly side of the Cartel. He was an enemy, they could kill him where he stood if they really wanted to. But he couldn't shake the thought of what they might be doing to her deep within the territory. He couldn't rest. He couldn't sleep. He couldn't plan. He needed closure, he needed things back to normal.

TURNING BACK TO MY SPECIAL PLACE

"You know, that's-- uhh, that's a pretty good point," He murmurs, half to himself as his gaze grows distant. He looks toward the ground for a moment, trying to think of what to say. They didn't seem very receptive. It made sense, considering the Ruins' reputation. What was he even doing in that clan? "I'm writing a blank check, I guess. All I want is Retro to be safe. I'll do anything in return. You want to kill me? Make me bleed? I'm higher up in the ranks, it would make a much better example," He muses out loud, expression not losing any of its determination. Well, there goes his self-preservation. In a moment's decision, he didn't care so much about death. He didn't fear it. He just wanted his girlfriend to get to see her kids. It was the promise he'd made for her, and if nothing else, he was going to fulfill that promise. Even if it killed him. Right..?

Idiot. Stupid. Foolish. Stop trying to be a fucking hero. The thoughts swirled around in his head as Breakout appeared in front of him, and before he could utter a single word he's knocked to the ground. He was fast, but not fast enough-- the horns made contact against his ribs hard enough to knock the wind out of the hyena, leaving him gasping for his breath with Breakout's claws against his neck. The bag that laid against his flank had been flung off of him, sending drugs of every variety onto the ground behind him. Yeah, they definitely didn't seem interested in bargaining. Wheezing, Speedy struggles against the godfather, unable to get himself back to his feet. He couldn't fight Breakout. Not here, not on his own turf. It was impossible. He'd made himself vulnerable by coming here, though. This was exactly what he was asking for. "H-hey, Breakout," He managed to cough out, breathing becoming strained as his lungs slowly become functional again. "Hebe's dead. I thought you should know," That was one problem he could check off the list, right? He wouldn't have to worry about her traitorous behaviour, or whatever it was that bugged him about Hebe. Speedy sucks in a breath, scattered brain searching for something he could say that might save him from death before he even got anywhere. "You and me, we're not so different, you know? We just want our families safe," He manages to say. Truthfully, he wasn't all that sure what the Ruins had done to the Cartel. He had no ill feelings toward the godfather, nor toward his family. If revenge was necessary, then it was necessary-- he just hoped the other might consider a trade that didn't involved revenge against his pregnant girlfriend.

    — //thats exactly what i was thinking omfg

He snorts, satisfied that he had managed to knock her into the water, hardly caring that his own pelt was quickly becoming drenched. He makes an innocent face, as if he hadn't just knocked her into the river, shrugging his shoulders. "Doesn't mean I'd ever let you win again!" He grins, his very expression challenging her. However, the hyena is taken by surprise as he's quickly shoved down into the water, a shocked look taking over his face. Luckily the water was shallow around here. Plus, he got a kiss out of it, which made playing along totally worth it. Like Retro, he'd never found anyone he got along with remotely as well as her. He enjoyed every moment of time he got with her, every second was pure bliss. Part of him never even wanted to leave this secret meadow, but he knew eventually they would have to-- but, they could always return and play in the water together whenever they wanted. Life was starting to... be okay again. For once, things were going his way. And he wouldn't let anybody take that away from him. Speedfreak jumps up from the water, shaking off his soaking pelt as close to Retro as he could. He'd then try to push her over into the water, trying to distract her with a kiss before pulling move similar to hers-- trying to pin her to the bottom of the sandy, muddy riverbed. What better spot to resume their first sparring match than here? Except, now things were different. They were better, a whole lot better.

    — Woah, looks like someone was a little late. Speedfreak had passed by the crowd earlier, hardly interested in whatever they were up to today. He had more important things to attend to-- namely, the hyena was headed out on a patrol of the territory. However, passing by once again on his way back, it looked like there was now a serious sparring session under way. Figuring he could use a little break from the work he'd been putting himself through, the hyena wordlessly assembles himself off to the side, gazing toward the two combatants as he extracts a joint from his bag. Wordlessly, he deposits it into his maw, sparking the end with a tiny jolt of electricity. This took him back all right, it reminded him of his fight with Retro when they'd first met. The hyena sits in silence, ruminating on the past for a moment as he smokes.

    — Dammit, not Jemma. That wasn't good. The hyena had given the kid a canteen of his own to bring around with him when he first joined not so long ago. Stepping up after Petra, he keeps off to the side, somewhere near Arya and Elian. He doesn't want to get in the way, though he can't keep his mind from exploring some disturbing thoughts. Indeed, it seemed possible that the kid had been targeted for his association with the Ruins. Was this really a safe place for youngsters? With all the violence, the war, the destruction of life-- never had Speedfreak questioned it, but lately he'd been thinking more about it, considering his own children would be calling this place their home rather soon. Becoming a parent changed a lot about one's demeanor, and it certainly forced Speedy to think deeply into his own moral principles. Did he want his children to pursue violence? Did he want them in harm's way? Maybe there was a safer clan he could bring them to, keep them safe for a while... no, they'd have to find their own paths. But that didn't mean he couldn't protect them until they were ready for that. He sure as hell would. "Don't worry Jemma, Petra's the best of the best. You'll be feeling better soon," He offers, removing the canteen that hung from his shoulder and handing it to Petra. Well, that got water covered. He didn't mind sharing his canteen with the kid even though he'd already given him his own. What was a little water between friends, anyways?

    — Speedfreak had also been thinking on the topic of children lately-- although it was secret knowledge, his own kids would soon be living here in the Ruins. He had to think a lot about how he would take care of them, how he would protect them like he'd promised. There were all these worst-case scenario thoughts that plagued the hyena's brain, but he pushed through them. After all, coming up with a plan on the fly was his natural way of doing things. he'd have to deal with whatever came up as it came up. "You look like you need an upper. Care to have a look?" He smirks, plopping his bag on the ground. Within the bag, Radiant could find nearly every type of psychoactive substance one could imagine-- including those that probably couldn't be imagined. His stimulant department was certainly the most developed, with everything from ecstasy to raw coca leaves.

    — Speedfreak had been hidden away in his home every since he'd returned from the Cartel. He had failed in attempting to rescue Retrobloom, something that he hadn't told anyone. And, needless to say, he wasn't planning on telling anyone. Getting his ribs smashed up by Breakout was a blow to his pride coupled with the shameful realization that he wasn't going to be able to save Retro. Was he depressed? Selfish? Angry? Maybe, but considering he never expected his girlfriend to come back, some of those feelings seemed warranted. Indeed, he was quite sure she would have died out there. It was a stroke of luck that she had made it home, just as it had been a stroke of luck that he'd escaped from Breakout's clutches. As the hyena walks over, he doesn't look much better than his better half-- his fur is muddy and matted, and his chest indicates some breathing trouble. But, he hoped that it would generally go unnoticed. "I was so scared," He murmurs, stepping up close to Retro such that their pelts brush together. She was hurt, clearly. But... she was alive. The hyena, pathetic as he was, looked as if he was holding back tears. He really thought she was going to die. Aiming a lick against her cheek, his eyes quickly look over her wounds. She was going to be okay after all. "I thought I'd find you on the border like I did last time," He shudders, shaking his head. "I'm glad you're home,"

I'M A LITTLE EMOTIONAL, GOTTA BE RATIONAL

    — Speedy wasn't far behind the others, his unresolved injuries slowing him down a bit more than usual. He also smelled of cannabis twenty-four hours a day, perhaps he was self medicating? There was no way of knowing for sure, as Speedfreak was rather quiet these days. Nevertheless, he listens to Tobi's request, wondering what the leader would say. Did Jace even still take apprentices? Wasn't he a little too old for that? Those thoughts, however, would never reach his maw. He was old, yes, but he wasn't as old as some. Calloway had been even older than Jace, and she still had some spring in her step. At least, until she went missing. Silently, the hyena seats himself, looking around at the crowd that had assembled. Hopefully nobody had noticed that he'd been away in his pyramid for at least an entire week.

"You look tired," He points out absentmindedly as the hyena steps forward, noting the stranger's yawn and his seemingly tired demeanor. So, they were free to call him whatever variation of his name they so pleased? Perhaps Speedfreak would call him Breakdarkness Total-Arcanium. Or maybe just toe. He had to laugh to himself, as the very idea of referring to the joiner as toe was pretty funny to him. Unlike before, the hyena no longer carried a bag around his shoulder, nor did he bring a canteen for the newcomer. Honestly, he'd forgotten about the canteens, leaving them in some corner of his pyramid when he went on patrols. As for his bag, however, he'd lost that at the border of the Cartel a week earlier. That was a story he hadn't told any of his clanmates, and he probably would never tell them-- it was embarrassing, stupid, and self-destructive. His ribs still ached from his encounter with Breakout, and he feared what his clanmates might say if they found out about his idiotic mistake.

    — Certainly an ensemble of creatures the newcomer wouldn't soon forget-- Speedfreak always wondered if the presence of people like Jace, Siej, and Arya was overwhelming for joiners. The three of them could be pretty intimidating if they wanted to, or at least the hyena thought so. Maybe Jace just scared him because he was his girlfriend's dad, but as for Siej and Arya, the pair always seemed to be thinking hard about something. Speedy did the same, though, and so perhaps a clone of himself would be just as mysterious and scary as the rest of the clan. It seemed like a question not even worth visiting, however. As he approaches after the others, his eyes fall upon Blackcastle, a kind of bored laid-back look upon his face. He'd been indulging in some relaxing plants lately, forcing him to slow down and look at the world at face value. It was grounding, in a way. "Speedfreak, welcome to the Ruins. Like Siej said, if you need anything, go find him," He grins widely, turning toward the hellhound for a moment. Oh yes, he was definitely going to send the newcomer after Siej. Maybe she'd pester him with questions. It could be funny. But hey, he was the one offering.

    — Speedfreak, unlike the others, had only seen Maho for a limited amount of time. He knew little about her, although by her words it seemed apparent that she was particularly close with Arya and Siej. Weird-- he wondered how Siej had made sow many friends when the guy was the definition of a stick in the mud. Either way, the hyena simply quirked his brow, seating himself as his attention is drawn toward the group of people that had assembled. Wasn't Maho a little young for a solo adventure away from the Ruins? Speedy, like the others, were curious as to where she'd been all this time. He didn't particularly care, but his curiosity was enough to keep him listening. He takes the joint that had been hanging from his maw and places it gently on the sand in front of him, figuring he'd better be polite around the large group of clanmates. Using his paws, he forms a kind of triangle-shaped cage so that it doesn't roll away. "Birthplace, huh," He murmurs, nodding slowly. Weird type of pilgrimage, he supposed. If he ever went back to his birthplace, all he'd get in return were some sour memories. No fancy powers like Maho had supposedly been granted. "Why would anyone ever want to go back to where they were born," Call it a stoned thought, but he figured it was worth asking. Did she somehow know that she'd get powers if she went back there? Or was it... just for the hell of it?

    — Speedfreak sighs as he drags himself toward the others, sky-blue gaze shifting toward the ground in a half eye-roll. He didn't think there was anything wrong with blue, but he figured it was all ritual-- all ceremonious in one way or another. Was Redvelvet worse than Hebe? Yes, certainly. Absolutely. Without a doubt, she was way worse than Hebe. Speedfreak almost couldn't believe it, but there she was, preaching the Red God's testaments before he even got a chance to breathe. Maybe he should have stayed inside today. Still, so long as she didn't get in the way of drug production or search his house for crackhead energy again, the Ruins would be big enough for both of them. Speedfreak, too, was ready to do something about the Cartel. Not only had they humiliated him and destroyed his supply, they'd brought harm upon his pregnant girlfriend-- and they probably would have killed her, too, if she hadn't escaped. With all the blood that was being drawn against his wishes, maybe it was time to draw a little blood of his own. Maybe it was time Speedy went red too, huh? "Good to have you back," He murmurs. However, with Hebe, perhaps he could have listened to her teachings with a certain level of expectation. Redvelvet, though, seemed to do everything strictly by the book. That meant Speedfreak would have to do things how he did them best-- on his own.

    — Public crying was like a summoning ritual for the local crackhead. Perhaps that was why so few of his clanmates were ever crying out in public, because they knew it would attract Speedy's watchful gaze. More often than not, he'd find them and offer them drugs, maybe a joint or two. Then he'd make sure they made it home, and that they always knew they had a friend in him. That was the Speedfreak guarantee. However, this time was a little different, since the one who was crying was an utter stranger to the hyena. Stepping forward, Speedy sighs, shaking his head as he retrieves a cigarette, offering it to Doomsday. "Shit happens my guy. Looks like you need one of these," Cigarettes were in short supply, and the heyna had to resort to rolling his own from foraged tobacco. It was a little bit gross, as it took forever for the leaves to cure and Speedfreak wasn't particularly patient. But, the final products were relatively clean with a much harder kick than the stuff Calloway had provided. He never thought he'd become a nicotine addict, but now he could hardly go three hours without a cigarette. He hoped Doomsday was the same-- if not, he'd probably get the precious tobacco stick knocked right out of his paw. Shit. "Speedfreak, by the way. Well met, I guess..?"

I'M A LITTLE EMOTIONAL, GOTTA BE RATIONAL

    — While Redvelvet and Cherrywine were indeed two children taking Hebe's place, Speedfreak was rather dismayed. At least Hebe had brought a level to humor to her work, knowing when it wasn't worth taking things seriously. The hyena figured Cherrywine and Redvelvet probably wouldn't do the same-- in fact, the two devout followers would probably perpetuate each others' beliefs in a bloody echo-chamber of death. Still, after hearing Cherrywine's call, Speedy had decided to suck it up and go to her silly church service. After all, her mother had just died, so the least he could do was support her nose-dive into religion. Although the two of them had been clanmates for a while, Speedy couldn't really remember the last time he'd actually had a conversation with her. Certainly, though, the church service was no time for chit-chat. And, it probably wasn't a time for sacraments-- so the hyena extinguished his joint before approaching, nodding his head slightly. He didn't say anything, though-- he simply took his seat and waited for the others to show up. In his head, he considered the possibility of nobody else showing up, leaving just Cherrywine and Redvelvet to try to get him to believe in the Red God. Now that would be funny. But, seeing as there were plenty of believers here in the Ruins, that would never happen. Still, it was a funny situation to run through his head. He figured he could spare an hour or two of his time sitting still and not talking. Surely these wouldn't happen often, right?

I'M A LITTLE EMOTIONAL, GOTTA BE RATIONAL

    — Deep in his weed binge, Speedy had come up with numerous novel ideas. He was beginning to realize that the ol' devil's lettuce was more than just something to get you stoned, it actually made him see things a bit... differently. He'd found some empathy within him to notice both Arya and Elian going through some turmoil. Perhaps inner turmoil-- they'd both recently lost someone whom they'd loved. Though, they also both seemed particularly good at hiding it. Arya, for one, was functioning alarmingly well given her circumstances. Elian, on the other hand, seemed a bit more detached. When the idea came to Speedy to give the two of them gifts, it didn't quite occur to him that giving presents wasn't exactly the best way to apologize for their losses. Nevertheless, the hyena had been hard at work, carving bones into different shapes in his pyramid. He'd cut his paw numerous times trying to fiddle with the knife, leaving bandage wraps around both of them. But he persisted, eventually forming two tiny bone sculptures out of a dozen rejects.

The first, for Elian, was a cactus. He'd covered it in black paint, which was relatively easy to create once he mashed berried together. To Speedfreak, a cactus was representative of several things. For starters, they were often prickly on the outside, but housed an oasis of fresh water on the inside. It seemed fitting for Elian, given his prickly personality-- but even Speedfreak had seen glimmers of that oasis every once in a while. A laugh, a smile, a love for another. It was sad that Lola was gone, but showing Elian that he had a friend to support him was certainly a good idea.

For Arya, he'd fashioned a tiny mushroom, which he'd covered with deep red blood. Yes, it was real blood, and it hadn't simply been from his bleeding paws. Whose blood it was, however, would continue to be a mystery. He didn't plan on revealing such secrets. A mushroom represented something ephemeral-- something that appeared for a day or two before dissolving into the earth below. It was cyclic, mysterious, perhaps pertaining to Arya's ever-changing way of life. When things happened to her, she rarely had time to react or process. At least, that was what it seemed like. Thus, the mushroom was fitting for her gift.

Stepping out of his pyramid finally, it was already growing late in the afternoon. He'd wasted the entire day, but it didn't bother him much. Tail swishing, the hyena could barely hide his grin as he made his way toward the center of the camp. Placing his trinkets down in the sand, he called out to his victims-- err, friends. "Arya, Elian, I've got something for both of you. Come check it out, why don't ya?" Again, he didn't consider that the both of them were probably in their own bad moods. If they didn't like their gifts? Well, that would be all right. They were pretty obscure, after all.

    ELIAN   arya.

    — When it came to tests of agility, Speedfreak was extremely competitive, unlike some of the others. As soon as the obstacle course was announced, Speedfreak had extinguished the cigarette he'd been enjoying, making his way over to find the others already lining up for the challenge. Speedy would probably make it a competitive thing if he ended up winning. But, if not, he'd simply blame it on some circumstance that he'd make up on the spot. Whatever the case was, it would still be fun to try and complete the obstacles. As soon as Cardinaldirections called out the starting command, Speedfreak dashed forward, jumping across the bones with ease-- that was, until he got toward the end of the bone obstacle. Unluckily, the two bones he stopped on began sliding, sending his front feet forward and his back feet backward. Landing with a thud on his chest, the hyena grumbled, pulling himself back up to his feet. He hadn't gone all the way down into the sand, so he supposed he was still considered alive. For now.

    — If Speedfreak had to guess, he'd probably say that Blackcastle was not a famous sculptor, and in fact probably had some trouble with this odd weekly task. Though, it did seem that she may have some prior artistic knowledge, as the average person probably wouldn't have been able to complete this on such short notice. The hyena steps forward, joining the group that was assembling around Balckcastle and her sculpture, gazing upon its detail. He nods slowly, agreeing with the others-- but who had been her model? There was no way she could have made something up with this level of detail. But Speedy had never seen a cat who looked like the one she'd sculpted. Maybe a clanmate he hadn't met yet? An old friend? Family? "Looks cool. Who's it a sculpture of?" He asks, quirking his brow-- curiosity was sure getting the best of him today. He figured it had to be someone fairly important to her for her to sculpt them into ice, so perhaps it was family. Speedfreak thought the idea was nice, carving an image of one's family to immortalize them.

"Kirsch?" The hyena speaks somewhat excitedly, stepping forward after Arya. His eyes are wide, and a wry smile beings to form upon his maw. He hadn't seen Kirsch for some time, not since after he'd comforted the kid when he was dealing with family trouble. He'd taken him under his wing, for lack of better words-- allowed him to hang out in his pyramid and practice his powers. Why the boy had left was beyond Speedfreak, though he supposed the sour memories tied to the Ruins probably wouldn't fade if he'd remained there much longer. "Where have you been?" Though his tone was mostly inquisitive, there was a distinct accusatory edge. Not that Speedy would ever be upset with Kirsch-- far from it, really. In fact, he was worried. Rarely did the hyena feel a real worry toward another. Perhaps he was simply burnt out of worrying after his little fiasco with the Cartel. It seemed as though Speedfreak's worries simply got him into stupid situations, so it was better for him to care less. He seats himself calmly, waiting for the other to respond, and hopefully for Cherrywine to show up, for whatever reason. After everything, it was nice to see Kirsch alive and well. It was a cruel world out there, and he'd hate to see someone whom he'd taken care of go out and get hurt, or worse.

"Drugs," The hyena states flatly as he arrives, coming up to the pair. "But I'm what you'd call, uhhh, one of a kind," He snorts, grinning wryly before beginning to brainstorm some ideas that everyone would enjoy. The good news was, drugs could be included in just about every other activity. Even sleeping? Yes, even sleeping-- ever heard of an opium den? Ignoring his internal conversation, Speedfreak pipes up once again, nodding in response to the ideas that had already been offered. "Games are sometimes exciting. Maybe some sort of party. With games and stuff. I don't know what's worth partying over, though," He answers honestly, shrugging his shoulders. As far as Speedy was concerned, anything was a reason to party. But for the rest of the clan, parties typically marked some sort of special event that had happened. Still, if they could convince the rest of the clan, maybe they could throw a serious rager just for the hell of it.
