    Looking away from the food on my brother's plate was hard. Like always, District Twelve had no food. None at all. So I had to go hunting every morning and supply my family with fare. My brother, Appaloosa (ridiculous name, I know), was at the age where he heads to the mines, and he isn't able to go hunting. So, they have to rely on my bow-and-arrow skills.




    To eat breakfast with my brother, mom and I got up at 4:45am. I always tried to ignore the dark circles under my eyes, but I got used to it.




    "So, Aspen," my mother said, "You should get going. Say goodbye to App."




    I nod mutely and trudge over to the dark haired giant, and wrap my arms around him. "Stay safe," I whisper, on my tiptoes to direct my hoarse voice towards his ear. Cockily, he responds with a smirk, "Oh, honey, don't worry. Now, you're going to be late for the Reaping if you don't go hunting. Now."




    Oh. The Reaping. How could I forget? I nodded, and walked to where my muddy boots were placed. "Okay, well, by mother," I agreed, waving to Mom briefly before slamming the door shut and following Appaloosa, then turning after a couple of minutes of walking.




    I didn't hesitate before crawling through the fence, and started to lightly jog over to the tree-covered land that was technically was the Capitol's. Once under the protection of pine trees, I walked towards the rock that hid my bow-and-arrows. Slinging it over my shoulder, I headed towards the flower sprinkled meadow. It was where [ yc ] and I met everyday, then we'd hunt for our families. [ yc ] was possibly the only person I trusted besides Appaloosa and my mother, and we are pretty close. He was -easy to say- my best friend.




    I sat down on the large, weathered rock, and aimed my bow at several birds here and there, not missing any, and simply hit all four. Dinner for two nights. Could be made into soup or something. I always calculated how many nights it would feed, and unfortunately it was a bad habit. I hate freaking out over things that could be fixed.




    Quickly, I heard a rustling in the bushes and grabbed for my bow. I spun it around and aimed it at the source, then dropped it when I realized it was [ yc ]. "Sorry," I mumbled, sitting back on my rock.
