All his mind could process was his mother's dead body lying limp in the grass that swayed in the breeze, tickling her calico fur. Why wasn't she breathing? Why was she lying there, just lying there, eyes closed, so still? Starr's heartbeat was escalating more and more as each second passed and he glared down with wide, confused eyes at the form of his mother. He was hardly even aware of the other feline's presence there with him, sobbing about names, or the canine killing some random animal in the foliage; he didn't even remember how he got here, what he'd heard, anything. He couldn't think, couldn't feel, could hardly breathe. Bittersweet... she wasn't breathing. She wasn't moving. What happened? Why?

He couldn't connect the matter to reason, couldn't bring himself to accept that his mother was dead. His mind completely repelled the idea, locking out everything from his senses until all he could smell and see and feel was his mother's limp, increasingly colder body. Why was this happening? He felt his eyes burn, and his chest constrict and his legs tremble. His entire being shivered in fear as he pressed his leathery nose to Bitter's neck and breathed a shuddering breath.

This place was so much better than the old two-leg summer camp, and it held so much possibility. What would the nephilim discover first? Where would he go? Who would join him on his adventures? There was a promising hope that settled in the hollow of his chest, a warm, earthy blossom that pervaded all of his senses with something akin to glee.
