"Yeah," said Moonlightring, who had bowed her head, feeling tired and disoriented. "Once your back is broken the risk is very high. you don't realise how much you depend on your sense of touch until it's gone."

"It should come fairly easily," said Moonlightring. "Just relax and push when you feel the urge to."
-
"It varies, usually a few moons," said Moonlightring. "It's--I hate getting those cases because there is virtually nothing I can do. But that is how it is. You won't be able to save them all."
-
"I'm well, thank you," purred Moonlightring. It was a little odd, she thought, that Aurorakit would find her kits adorable, as they were nearing 5 moons and she herself was a kit, but Moonlightring would definitely not argue. To her they would always be adorable babies. "What's going on with these cobwebs? You okay?"
-
"Then all these cuts just appeared--Holy Starclan, look at you! It's--you got into a fight, didn't you--Who did this?" Moonlightring could clearly see the wounds had not been inflicted by another kit. She began to groom them, first of all. Already she knew the steps she would take to treat them, but what she wanted to know was who had inflicted them.
-
"They did. Brightest apprentice I've ever had." Moonlightring swallowed, and then she began to cry. "It just isn't fair."
-
Moonlightring quickly composed herself again. "Thank you. I'm sorry. I know--whining about it won't change anything."
-
ooc: Of course!
ic: "That's marigold. Very good for preventing infection," said Moonlightring, "although poisonous if swallowed. I use it in my poultices."
-
"Yeah, they come in more than one colour. They're very pretty," Moonlightring agreed. "They only grow around twoleg areas though."
-
"Yes I have," said Moonlightring. "Their injuries were just too much. They usually died shortly after they got here."
-
"Lionkit, hold on, this is serious, i will talk to you when I'm done here," said Moonlightring. Clearly her son didn't even care about the wounded kit who had come in here. As usual he was absorbed in himself. And he was five moons old. Very soon he would pass out of her care and into that of a mentor. Maybe the mentor would get through to him, maybe Lionkit would mature out of it. She prayed it would be so.
She looked back at Aurorakit. "Stay with me. You and I are going to Phoenixstar as soon as I patch you up and we're going to tell him what you told me. This ends here and you don't ever have to go back to Demonfang again, you don't ever have to see him."
She continued cleaning the wounds.
-
"Lionkit's just a little nervous right now," said Moonlightring. "It's nothing you did. You're fine--you came to the right place. I'm sorry, my apprentice passed away and I've been tending to my kits... Let me go make a poultice." She moved back towards the rear of the den. "Lionkit? If this is upsetting you just head back out to camp. The other kits would probably love it if you joined them. Manakit might even be there. If not maybe you can go calm down inside the den. Nobody else is in there right now." She wasn't sure if seeing the wounded kit was upsetting him or what. He had been fine just before.
She found the herbs she needed and began to chew them. Aurorakit had quite a few gashes that needed application.
-
"Every hour of every day," said Moonlightring. "He was like a son to me."
-
"I'm just--glad I was off with my kits when it was found," said Moonlightring. "I was spared that last memory of him. He's in Starclan now--I know that's where he's got to be. Where I'll be soon, everyone will be. But I know Starclan. It isn't like this life. It's not better--it's just different. And like there are bad things about this existence, Starclan's missing stuff as well. There is no perfect place, just a...sort of bunch of stepping stones we jump from one to the next. Those in Starclan even speak of a realm beyond theirs."
-
"I'm here. What happened to your leg?" Moonlightring made room for him to enter.
-
"Frogpaw? I barely know him, but as long as he isn't sick I'm cool with that," said Moonlightring.
-
"Now you're getting it," said Moonlightring. "The rest of the year, when I get supplies I'm thinking of leafbare. Being caught without the stuff you need when you need them is a total disaster."
-
"What are you doing!" yowled Moonlightring. She abruptly went and pushed her son away from the plants. Moving fast for an arthritic cat dying of kidney disease. But adrenaline still worked fine. She hooked her claws into a bundle of dried yarrow and put it before him. "Eat. Eat all of this now."
Her face showed the whites of her eyes. She'd never been so terrified in her life.
ooc: Sure, you can kill him if you want. She has other kits.
-
"I haven't spoken to him in a while," said Moonlightring. "I talk to you a lot more."
-
"Cut it out and eat the yarrow, NOW. If you don't eat it right now I'm going to force feed it." Moonlightring had no idea what he'd eaten but he'd been in the area where some really potent stuff was stored. "Why in the world would you do this, are you crazy."
Yet that was it, she knew it. Her son was insane, and there was little she could do. Everyone always made jokes about being crazy, but it was about the least funny thing she could think of.
