Looking out at the city below her, her amber orbs grazed the old buildings, decaying and full of shiny, translucent shards of broken glass. What was in them? Some of them had to be libraries. Surely the Dauntless compound had a public library! But then again, the Dauntless were not known for being a particularly bookish bunch. Moving her thoughts from that, she looked past those buildings, to the lights in the distance. With a pang in her heart, she recognized it immediately. The Erudite compound.

There were quite a few emotions rolling through her mind at that moment; Relief, regret, sadness, longing. Eli couldn't help but wonder what her family was doing, their only child having abandoned them for what they surely thought of as savages. She wanted to run out there, to tell them she was still here, doing well and missing home at the same time. Why couldn't she be both? Doubtless and Erudite, brave and intelligent? If she were both, there would be so many opportunities for her! However, the society she lives in was not built with that in mind.

When she finally got out of her thoughts, she was in tears. There was no way she was crying! Eli would be brave, and fearless, no matter how that manifests. That is what she would dedicate her training to: proving the other Dauntless kids wrong, that transfers weren't weak. And her first test was the zipline.

She wiped her eyes, brushing a few locks of scarlet from her face. The first kid had just went down, and her chance was now. She smiled and walked up to the zipline, footsteps silent even on the gravelly roof. She managed to strap herself into the harness without help, laying down into it as naturally as she could. Feeling herself being pulled back, she shut her eyes, bracing for free fall.

Snapping her eyes open, they immediately began to water, but it didn't obstruct her view of the city. It was quite the spectacle, really. The lights all flashed by her, noises of the night being drowned out by the wind whistling in her ears. Her bright red curls whipped along behind her, seeming to have a mind of their own in the breeze. She was as free as a bird, and it was a damn good feeling, too.

Gasping for breath, her shoulder grazed the edge of a building, leaving a small scratch where her skin had met concrete. She blinked furiously for a few moments, then finally letting out a cry of victory. "Woooo!" This reminded her of the first time she got on on the train, dodging authority to go do something thrilling.

Realizing the ending was much closer than intended, her breath hitched and she slammed on the brake, eyes widening as she felt some cord snap. In a moment of fear, she swung herself onto the board feet first. She nailed the landing onto the board, but severely underestimated the power of inertia. She fell into a somersault, pulling her harness after her, and landed on the ground with a muffled thump near Finn.

Eli felt the asphalt under her hands and coughed, having been winded from the whole thing. She really wanted to climb back up and do it again, but her body throbbed with a dull ache from rushing the initial climb. It was so worth it, though. The feeling of being up there in the air with nothing in her way was like a fantasy. A fantasy she never would have achieved staying in Erudite. Erudite was a wonderful faction, and she valued most everyone in it. Everyone in Erudite had a job, just like the other factions- it just wasn't her job.

There was a tear in her hoodie from her shoulder to the middle of her upper arm, and a cut revealed by it. She was vaguely aware of the fact she was bleeding, and the corners of her plump lips formed a soft frown. That would definitely leave a scar. Remembering a phrase her male friends had repeated so many times, she laughed softly, it parting the tense air around the girl and Finn like a soft wave lapping at the shore. Chicks dig scars... Right?

She looked over at the other girl, and once she had finished talking, Eli looked her up and down. Where did she know her from? She knew the girl was a Dauntless born, but not why she recognized her. Taking a moment to wrack her brains, she came upon a name. "J... JT?" she said, loud enough for the girl to hear. Finally figuring it out, she came to the conclusion JT was a friend of her best friend for basically all of school, a dauntless boy named Maxwell. She'd seen them hanging out on the train a couple of times, and they had briefly exchanged words, but no more than really asking for homework help or details on school gossip. She had always seemed more unwavering than Eli, but her grades had never been too good, so they remained on even ground.

The redhead stood up straighter and looked at her curiously. "You know Max, from school?" she asked. If she could end up with JT as a friend, it would definitely be helpful to have another person to help with the stress of initiation.

The Magician's Daughter im sorry if I’m super dumb or something but was there a school for all the factions or something? It’s been a while since I read the books :/

yeah. you made me honestly doubtful so i had to look it up, but yeah. Every faction shares a big school for every level (lower, middle, and upper) but that's the only time the factions meet, unless there's some sneaking around involved.
