backstory
dallas and charles grew up in the little town of ampthill, britian. living next to each other in thatched cottages the two boys always loved to stir up trouble around the neighborhood. the two little pranksters would throw stones at mrs. mcgruff's raggedy old cats who were clearly a case of too much inbreeding. in class the boys were exact opposites. charles was a devious trouble maker that never sat down. he would always tease the girls and get into fights with other boys. while dallas was the quiet one who obeyed the rules. some would say he was charles sidekick because dallas would always be there with charles. once the two reached secondary school, they grew closer than ever. both joined the school's football team but charles was a bit more of the athletic type. dallas as one of the brightest students for his level, while charles struggled wit his studies. because of this, the two would have late night study sessions which usually ended up being anything but studying. between sneaking into pubs or taking charles's dad car out for a joyride, the two would set off on late night adventures. but all thier fun seemed to come to a halt when britian declared war on germany on September 1, 1939. charles father had gotten so aggravated with his wildness, he forced his son to volunteer to join the british army. since dallas and charles were inseparable, dallas went behind his mother's back and enlisted as well.

charles lay on his cot and stared up through the hole in the tent. he just barely could see the night sky and all it's stars. he thought of the time when he and dallas had took a trip one weekend down to the willowbrook pond and spent the day fishing and the night under the stars. he took in a heavy breath, his hand lay on her bare chest and one leg was sticking out of his blankets. the weather was cold but inside the tent was pretty hot due to all the bodies. he began to play with the necklace around his neck, it was a gold cross depicting jesus. charles mother was very religious and for his tenth birthday she gave him the necklace as his only gift. laying there in the dark, the soft sound of bugs and such outside were calming noises. as relaxed as charles was, he wasn't able to sleep. like most nights, he found himself wide awake and his mind was restless with thoughts. he often thought of how he felt angry and betrayed by his father, who forced his to join. charles understood why he was so upset but didn't believe that a father sending his only son off to war was a just punishment. charles's face was scrunched up in a thinking expression. his thick eyebrows creased into a frown and his green eyes squinted as he though more about his father. charles's body heat rose and his heart quickened from the anger the thought of his father brought to him. he thought of the day that his father walked in on him. god charles wished he could go back and change it. he wished that he had stood up to his father and defended himself. but it was too late for that. his father's last words echoed in the back of charles's mind. "you're nothin but a bloody f*ggot." charles clenched his fist around his necklace, the cross started to cut into his palm. letting out a low groan, he eased his grip on the necklace and furiously turned over in his bed. he found himself looking at dallas, and his anger vanished. a small smile came across his face. even though charles was an only child, he'd always thought of dallas as his true brother.
