[fancypost bgcolor=; bordercolor=transparent; overflow: auto; height: 80px; width: 350px][justify][size=8]Something weird had happened. Rikki had grown gills. It had started the day before; a dull aching in her neck, like someone small was standing on it. It had grown and grown, until night, when it had ceased suddenly. Deciding it was nothing, the fawn calico had gone to bed as usual.
Now in the morning, she was, as she did sometimes, swimming. It was high-tide, and the water was calm and salty. She was attempting to hook a fish, though they were rather small and fast. She dived under, cringing at the water that stung her eyes, and trying to see. Accidentally taking in a mouthful of water, the cat was beyond surprised to find that instead of almost making her sick, the salt water felt like a breath of air.
Not so much in shock as curious, she swam further, a light shape flitting through the water. Sure enough, she could breathe. Dragging herself to the shore, she checked her reflection in a small rock-pool, twisting her head both ways and squinting.
She had gills?
