I am always crying when I see a tearjerker in books but however I believe that I am pretty good at pulling out emotions in readers. I always image the saddest thing or relate to my character so we are in tune and then description come is handy. How do you feel? For example:
He was dead. He was dead. He was dead. Knowing that my father had died caused my throat to constrict painfully as unshed tears rose. Shock was evident as if there was ice in my veins, killing me slowly as if I would so meet the same fate as my father who lay before me. Falling to the ground with a gut wrenching sob as if it was a cry to the gods for their mercy. No more would he smile upon me like I was his darling baby girl. No more was he to comfort me and my woes. He was dead. He was dead. He was dead.
Just think of how you would feel in your character's shoes.
