Alex turned around at the sound of Christian's voice and looked over. "How are you...What did...When...", he stuttered at the sight of the now human mermaid, but eventually he just settled for stunned silence. He noticed how unsteady she was. Even though she had the utmost grace in the water, she was as clumsy as could be on land. "You don't spend a lot of time on land, do you?", he asked curiously. Now that the shock had worn off, curiosity had set in. He too seemed to accept the fact that he and Christian had met Mermaids today.

Alex nodded to Raine. "How did you change your fin into feet? What do you eat? How do you breath on both land and water?", he asked, but then grinned sheepishly for bombarding her with questions. He didn't know how long he would get to talk to her this time and wanted to learn as much as he could. He soon realized with a slight pang of sorrow that whatever he learned would have to be kept to himself. He couldn't bring himself to exposing this race. Their lives would be ruined, they would be put on show, like animals in a zoo. Right there, he promised himself never to tell anyone this amazing secret.

Alex remained standing in the sand. The sunset was indeed beautiful as it's magnificent colors sank into the sea. The sky looked to be painted with the blended hues of brilliant watercolors. He closed his eyes and inhaled the salty sea air, enjoying the moment. Alex stepped lightly towards the water and sat down at its edge. With one hand he sifted through the sand beside him, the colorful shells mixing in with the tan sand.

Alex looked Isabelle straight in the eyes. "You have my absolute word.", he said with the utmost sincerity. "I swear on my life that I will never tell another soul.", he pledged, his eyes taking on a serious sheen. He meant the words he spoke with his entire being. He could never do something as cruel as what had been done to Isabelle's mother. He wanted to prove to her that she was wrong. Not all humans were vile creatures, only the majority of them. He honestly didn't have as many friends as many of the other boys in his school. He didn't care for their crude jokes and harsh words. His true companion was the sea.

Alex watched as Isabelle's graceful figure slid among the waves. "You too. See you around.", he replied to Christian. He watched out over the ocean for several more moments contemplating all that had happened. He was shocked back to reality when his mother came up the beach behind him. "Alexander honey, it's time to come home. You don't want to miss out on Taco Night do you? You're father's special spice blend.", she tempted him. Alex could practially taste the tacos already. "Sure mom, I'll be home in a minute.", he said. His mother walked up to him, wrapped a jacket around him, and kissed his head before heading back up the beach.

Alex reluctantly tore himself away from the ocean and trudged back to his house. It was ony a short walk from the beach, less than a minute. He opened the front door, quickly ate a few tacos, and excused himself to his room. The walls were plastered with various surfing posters and a retro water bed sat against one wall. Alex fell back onto the bed, his eyes closed. He had had a strange and unexpected twist from his routine today, but he figured it was worth it. With a slight smile upon his face, he calmly drifted off into calm dreams about mermaids diving through the sea.

Alex woke up at the crack of dawn and immediately leapt to his laptop and checked the tide chart. With a silent celebration, he left his room. He changed quickly into a pair of swim trunks; The waves promised to be perfect for surfing that day. After eating a breakfast of frosted mini wheats and an orange, he grabbed his favorite longboard from the garage. He silently left the house and began his walk down to the beach. He didn't need to let his mom know: he went surfing in the mornings regularly. Alex hummed a happy tune as he reached the sand. The sun was just coming up over the horizon, casting a bright glare across the crystal clear ocean. He ran down the beach and hit the water with a splash. With ease, he slid out further from shore until he was right where the waves broke. This was his home.

Alex studied the waves for a few moments and found the rythym to the set. With precision, he spotted an upcoming wave. As it neared him, he began paddling towards the shore with as much power as he could. This put him in the perfect position and as the wave caught up to him, it pushed his board forward. He popped up and stood on the board, the wave carrying him toward the shore. Alex laughed, loud and clear. This feeling was like none other. He doubted he would survive if the beach was taken from him.

The wave had been a powerful one, carrying Alex clear to the beach. The water here was no less than a foot deep and he spotted the deep black of a shark's tooth among the shells. He groped for the shark tooth and pulled his hand from the water, the tooth clutched in his palm. He deposited it into one of his pockets and turned back towards the waves. His shoulder muscles worked furiously as he paddled out past the waves' breaking point and into calmer water. With a content sigh, he laid back on the board and closed his eyes, lulled by the gentle rocking of the waves.

The waves slapped lightly at the side of Alex's board. His fingers trailed in the water beside him. The waves were so calm here, it was amazing how different the ocean could be. Alex gave a sigh of contentment and sat up, his feet dangling in the water. His back was still turned to Isabelle and he took no notice of her. Far off in the distance, he could just barely make out Christian and his friends on the beach. Turning, his eyes refocused, looking into the water below. There was not a thing to be seen, just the aquamarine greens of the ocean's water.

Alex's head whipped around just in time to spot Isabelle before the splash from her sudden movement washed over him. He laughed good naturedly, shaking his now sopping hair. Flecks of water flew from his curls and he looked over at Isabelle. "What was that for?", he asked, a smile appearing on his face.

Alex noticed her cautious expression with confusion of his own. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to, really.", he explained. He could tell she didn't trust him yet and he could relate. If he was in her position he would be wary too. Alex remained in a relaxed pose, his arms gripping the rails of the board and his feet in the water. He glanced over at Isabelle to see how she would react.

"No,", he answered, "Not necessarily." He found it odd that she was just as interested in the ways of humans as he was in the ways of mermaids. He calmly got off the board to demonstrate. Treading water with his arms and legs, Alex turned to Isabelle. "See? It's definitely nowhere near as good as having a tail, but it gets the job done.", he explained with a small smile.

    OOC: Goodnight!!!

Alex was still treading water next to Isabelle and Raine as he answered. To Isabelle, he said,"Well, most humans prefer the land, but if you gave me a choice, I'd chose the water any day. We do eat fish, but it's usually cooked. And about the friends thing, I, well, I don't care as much for the other humans. I guess that's one thing we have in common. A lot of them are really crude and unfriendly.", Alex felt strange talking like this, as if he wasn't a part of the human race. He was fully aware he was different from most of others, and honestly, it didn't bother him. "I like to think of the sea as my friend.", he finished.

Alex's eyes widened as Raine popped back up to the surface with her sea turtle, shortly followed by Dasia holding onto a shark. He nodded in response to Dasia's comment. "I know, and it irks me that people come here and pollute it. We have no right to do that, especially since we've already polluted our own land." He laughed suddenly, a suprised, but rather happy laugh while shaking his head slowly.

Alex's laughed died out as he heard this horrible fact. "Raine, I-I'm so sorry. Humans have polluted all of their land as well. I don't like it either. I just don't know of any way to stop it. Most humans don't even care, don't even bother with the ocean. It's all about money to them. I've done what I could to stop the pollution, beach clean-ups, but nothing seems to help." He laughed again, but softer and with a slightly sadder tone this time. He shook his head from side to side as he did so.

"I understand completely. And I'm sorry you feel that way, but you still have my word. I'll never break that vow.", Alex replied to Raine. His eyes showed deep sadness at he realized he was losing a friend. He couldn't help but wonder why, just because he was human, that Raine would hate him.
