I left my house grabbing a bagel on the way. My Ma was cutting up my little sisters food and she asked where I was going in such a hurry.
"School." I shouted from the front door.
Ma snorted.
I hopped into Pa's 1978 VW Bug that he named Sharona. It was his dream car and he saved every last penny for it for as long as I can remember. It's amazing that he even let me touch it let alone drive it to school but he did for some strange reason. My little sister loved the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and whenever she buckled herself in Sharona she would howl those words just because the car was older and clunked whenever Pa would change gears.
I put the key in the ignition and pulled the stick into reverse and headed off to Brisk's house.
-
I pulled into her driveway as she pulled the door open and sat there. I drove off to Hester High School with only the radio playing REO Speed Wagon.
-
I peered over her with bright puppy eyes. She was smaller than me but she looked smaller right now for some reason.
"Brisk, that's fine. We have school. We can talk all we want right now and at school. It's okay."
I put my arm around her.
-
"Hey, I can take care of myself. Tell me if he hurts you, you got it?"
-
"You know you're the worst lie, right?" I said with a grin on my face. Even in the most serious times I had to smile. I laugh when I argue or get mad. It's just who I am. I always look for the good in everything.
-
"Usually. Sometimes not."
-
"Brisk you can't just let this happen because if you do... Brisk, I've seen what he's done to you. He might... kill you or something. You need to tell someone or fight him back. You have to."
-
I'm a little confused still I'm sorry haha. Can you keep going a bit. You're carrying Dally right? Haha I'm super bad at this.
-
"You need to tell the police or the principal or someone other than me."
-
I took my keys, swung on my backpack, and stuffed my hands deep inside my pocket not looking up. I was average. Not shy, not a partier, but I was different and I knew it. How I thought, what I say, all different. Not necessarly a good or bad thing, just different.
-
"Brisk did your dad do that to you?"
-
"He's gonna hurt you real bad one of these days."
-
Okay one last question. I'm in Dally's point of view right? How am I suppose to say anything when he's still dead?
-
I felt myself waking up but I couldn't open my eyes or move. I was shivering and my lips were chapped. I tried to speak but it only came out a mumble. What happened? Where am I? I furrowed my brow trying to recapture my memory but completely failed.
-
I tried to catch up to her but the five minute bell rang and we had a different homeroom, mine was on the other side of the building. (He's eighteen so do you want him just finishing up senior year or do you want him in college or working or something)
She's getting lucky. One of these days she's not going to be. One of these days, and I'm not going to be able to save her. I wouldn't be able to live the rest of my life knowing she passed when I could have helped.
"Stop." I mumbled to myself. "None of that will happen. It won't. It can't. It will."
-
We can if you want but what does my guy do? You tell me
-
I spotted Brisk sitting on a school bench at the end of the school day and headed towards her.
-
-
"I don't care. It's better me than you."
-
Hand in hand we headed to Sharona and put her in reverse and headed to Brisk's home with the clunk of Sharona in the background.
