The premise of this rp is based on the movie The Road, in that it's an unnamed apocalypse and it's more about the characters just trying to survive instead of saving the world from doom. The world is already doomed and basically a wasteland, so no use in trying to save it. Just save yourself.

The entire world is in shambles, and some people have stooped to cannibalism in order to survive. Spring and summer are difficult enough while plants and animals flourish in the somewhat better conditions in the areas that were still wild before everything happened. Autumn is a scary time, as winter is approaching, and supplies need to be gathered and stored for the coming frigid months. Winter is especially harsh, with nothing growing, and the cannibals growing hungrier by the day.
Weapons are not always hard to come by, but bullets are precious things. Not only do they provide a means of defense, but they also offer an escape from things far worse than the release that death brings.
They say the sea offers a better life, that the blue ocean still beckons those that seek its refreshing spray. But making the trek that far, crossing that wide expanse of hundreds of miles... It's practically impossible. But hope pushes some on, and they follow the call of the sea.
Disease, starvation, dehydration, cannibals, thieves, and countless other threats face survivors. The world is not kind, and so kindness can be deadly. No one lives anymore. They simply survive.

The world is already doomed and basically a wasteland, so no use in trying to save it. Just save yourself. Though it is post-apocalyptic, I posted it there but no one seems to be on that board. I'd also like for the emphasis to be on the romance as the two characters try and survive.

I will be playing the girl. Don't worry about a signup, just provide a sample of your writing style and if I like it we can get started. So just jump in!
(However, a pic is appreciated if it's not too much trouble. You don't have to, as I've got an image in my mind already; I just like knowing how you imagine your character.)

OOC

That's fine! I'm ready to get started whenever you are. I'll post first, if it's okay with you.
I typically play in third-person, but we can do first-person if you prefer; I can do either.
Oh! And my posts aren't always super-long like this one, just my first few to kind of get stuff set up.

Clarke's stomach groaned its discontent at the recent lack of food. She hadn't allowed herself any food since early that morning, and it was now late into the afternoon. The summer had ended, and it was now just past the middle of autumn, so many of the animals she usually hunted were beginning to finish their stocking up for the winter and starting to find burrows for their hibernation.
She had been searching for supplies for the coming winter, preparing in much the same way the small animals of the forest had been. Her stock of food had dwindled to a pathetic can of beans, accompanied by some potatoes she had dug up from a small garden she came across a week ago. But the place near her hideout had been picked clean, so she was having to venture further and further out in search of the basic necessities.
With a sigh, she leaned against a tree, eyeing the surrounding foliage, looking for some sign of sustenance. It appeared that there may be a clearing up ahead, so after a moment longer of resting against the tree, she started off again, heading for the clearing. A slight chill in the breeze caused her to wrap her ratty coat closer around her as she broke from the tree line, and what she saw nearly brought tears to her eyes.
A field, an entire field, of dried corn stalks. They were scatter haphazardly across the clearing, standing tall with no appearance of rows or order. As she approached, she was careful to stay quiet; there was no telling who or what may have been watching over the field, or if hunters were using as bait for game, animal or otherwise.

Oh don't worry about not having seen the movie. Basically it's just a nondescript post-apocalyptic world, a few years after the apocalypse, with people just trying to survive. And no, you don't have to pal a character from the film; like I said, I'm really just using the premise.
Also, don't worry about having a picture. I just like having an idea of how to picture the character as you imagine them, so it's not really necessary or anything :)

Oh! And do you prefer first or third person? I'm fine with either, but I'll post this one in third person.

Arden shuffled down the road, following an old, old road that was somehow still paved, despite everything. She sniffed and pulled her coat closer around her weak frame as she mentally marked the places she passed off of her list. She was already half a day's walk out from her hideout, scavenging for what meager supplies she could scrounge up before the final warmth of autumn wore away and gave way to the harshness of winter. Her fiery red hair was tangled and dirty, looking more like a dusty brown animal pelt than its natural flaming brilliance. Dark circles hung beneath her eyes, and exhaustion racked her in a quiet cough as a pang of hunger hit. She stuffed her hand into her pocket, trying to grab just one or two berries she had plucked off of a bush that may have bloomed late in the season. She hoped it would help subside her hunger until she could find other supplied, but it would have to do for now. Mostly, though, she was hoping that she wouldn't happen across any hunters; she was dangerously close to their main hunting grounds, though she didn't know it.

OOC

She's approximately 23, give or take.
Mmm.. I was thinking Middle America, so maybe southeastern Colorado? The Oklahoma panhandle?
Oh, and I wrote the post like it was late afternoon, but it can be morning, if you'd rather us start there :)

Clarke froze as a figure appeared across the field. She had just noticed the farm house as it made its presence visible. Was it a hunter? Oh, how she desperately hoped not. She had narrowly escaped the cannibals one time before, last winter, and it was not an experience she wanted to relive. The human appeared male, judging by his build and gait, but with most people gaunt and emaciated, it was difficult to tell sometimes. She watched in silence as he moved toward the stalks, grabbing two ears of corn as though it was somewhat routine; perhaps he lived in the farmhouse at the edge of the field. In that case, she assumed he may claim the field as his, and if he wasn't a hunter, he would certainly try to kill her to protect his homestead.
Keeping that in mind, once he was out of site, she crept as lightly as she could manage towards the stalks, her stomach the only reason she dared to take anything. She wouldn't survive without it, but she had no energy to outrun an assailant if she wasn't careful, so she was dead either way. She managed to get up to a stalk and examined the ears of corn, grimacing as she saw that this plant had been picked clean by the grows. She moved on to another; this, too, had been stripped of its kernels. With a frustrated huff, she crept on, throwing glances at the farmhouse as she moved from stalk to stalk. Finally, she found where the birds had left off, and pulled first one, then two ears from the dried stalk. The kernels were sure to be tough, as they had been left to grow and had likely dried into their seed form, but that didn't matter. She would take what she could get, and in this drier state, it would hopefully last longer.
Clarke cast another glance at the farmhouse, and then made a fatal mistake: she got greedy. "Just one or two more wouldn't hurt," she mumbled to herself, moving to grab just one more ear. But her foot landed on a particularly old, dry stalk that had landed on the ground, causing it to snap loudly. She froze, feeling like a cornered rabbit, unsure if she should run or not, hoping that no one heard.

Arden gave a soft gasp of surprise as a figure appeared on the rode ahead of her, and she froze like a deer in the headlights, fearing for her life. She saw the glint of metal in the figure's hand, and it appeared to be male. How she hoped it wasn't a hunter, certainly not one after human prey. But as he turned an ran away from her, she breathed a sigh of relief. There was no call for assistance, not even a glance of contemplation in her direction. But, what if he was being chased? It could be that his pursuers were not far behind, and that he was not the one she should be worrying about.
As that occurred to her, she quickly got off the road, watching as the male's figure sprinted down the pavement while she crouched in some brush. Why was he staying on the road? If he was running from someone, wouldn't it be better to hide? She shook her head and tried to stay hidden, watching from the shadows as more and more distance was put between the two of them. Her stomach growled, and she quieted it with two more berries, promising herself something more when she could find anything.

As the male approached, Arden quickly stood, backing a few steps. What had caused him to stop and turn around? The possibility of stealing any supplies she had? Forcing her to take him to her hideout so that he could take whatever he wanted? She had no idea, but she had little to no energy to try and run from him, so the best thing to do for now was find out what he wanted.
She halted her retreat and stood, fighting against the urge to run as he closed the distance between them. "That's close enough!" she called to him, her voice trembling slightly from fear, once he was about ten yards away. Any closer and she feared he would have an easier time of catching her, should he choose to do such a thing.

Arden nodded, her brows furrowing in contemplation. She had to assume he was being honest; it was much easier to just overpower her than try to trick her. And it did make a little sense to have a partner, with safety in numbers and all that, though sane ones were hard to come by. She started to take a hesitant step forward, but stopped herself and stayed where she stood.
"What's your name?" she asked, eyeing his belt where the knife was.

Arden slowly bent to retrieve the knife, keeping her eyes trained on Drake, still suspicious. Though, as she stuck the knife into her own belt, she relaxed enough to identify herself, "I'm Arden." She stood up straight and added, "If you're trying to trick me, there's not much point. I haven't got anything on me but a couple of berries." The last part was a lie, as the weight of a can of spinach hung heavily in the bottom of her backpack. "And even if you aren't trying to trick me, why should we team up?" She had already weighed the pros and cons in her mind, she just wanted to find out the stranger's reasons.

Don't worry about it! Had a storm at my house yesterday, and the internet was off all day yesterday and most of this morning anyway ;)

Arden's expression turned from one of staunch suspicion to one of slight confusion. Look out for someone? She thought she might understand what he meant, but it didn't seem like a very smart reason, mainly because having someone to look after usually also meant having someone slowing you down. However, she couldn't deny him this reason, because she understood the deeper meaning behind it: he must be lonely. And that was certainly something she could identify with. She had been on her own for a very long time, and was afraid that she may go insane if she remained that way.
Slowly, she nodded, and allowed herself a few careful steps forward. "Are you sure?" she ventured. "I'm not exactly an ideal partner for survival." As if to prove her point, her lungs decided to try and hack themselves up her windpipe in a few rapid-fire coughs. The coughing had come up recently, she assumed it was dehydration, as she hadn't found a suitable water source in a couple of days, and had just finished off the last of her water yesterday morning.

"Okay," Arden responded softly, a small, sheepish smile playing at her lips. "I, I ran out of water yesterday morning," she tried to explain. "Hopefully that's all this is." She gestured in the general area of her lungs before letting her arm fall back to her side.
At the very least, she'd have somewhere to sleep tonight besides the ramshackle lean-to that she had in the woods.

"I'm Arden," she told him, hesitantly extending her hand for him to shake. It felt somewhat odd, shaking someone's hand after all that had happened. "And I lied about not having anything," she confessed, another sheepish expression crossing her face. "I've got a can of spinach, but that's it. I just didn't want you to steal anything from me if you were... Dishonest."

Olivia Wren Ernst

Wren sprinted down the hall, clutching her books to her chest, hoping to God a teacher or stupid hall monitor didn't find her running for her life through the corridors. The bell was bound to ring any second now, and she couldn't afford another tardy, or she'd end up in detention, according to her homeroom teacher. It wasn't her fault she was always late to first period! Her brother, Sam, was supposed to drop her off on his way to work, but it took forever for him to wake up and get a move on. She would drive herself, but her parents couldn't afford to get a car for each of their four kids as they got their license. So they had gotten a little beat-up pickup for them to share until they could afford to buy their own vehicle and pay for gas and insurance themselves.
So this was why Wren was running to class, sliding into the room just as the bell rang.
"Cutting it a little close today, are we Ms. Ernst?" Mr. Baldwing said, ice dripping from his words. Wren knew he was just dying to pin something on her; he had had each of her three brothers in his class before, so he already had a distasteful opinion of her.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Baldwing," Wren apologized through panting breath. "I won't let it happen again." D-mn right it won't happen again, she thought. I'll have to start riding with Mom again, as embarrassing as that is.
"I'm sure you won't, Ms. Ernst, as I'll be seeing you after school in detention," he intoned, a triumphant gleam in his eye as he handed her a detention slip.
"But I wasn't late," Wren protested, gesturing towards the door. "I was in class when the bell rang!"
"But you weren't in your seat," Mr. Baldwing clarified. "I made it very clear on the very first day that students are to be in their seats when the bell rings. Now take your seat, Ms. Ernst."
Wren fought her hardest not to glare at the man, and barely managed not to snatch the slip from his hand as she turned towards the desk, muttering to herself amidst snickers and whispers from the other students. She plopped down in the chair, still grumbling as she opened her book to where Mr. Baldwing instructed as class got underway.

"A few miles east of here," Arden replied, gesturing in that direction. "Supplies were getting scarce, though, so I decided it was probably time to move on." She stifled another cough; her throat felt raw from the action, and her lungs burned from the strain. "About that water..."
