she squeezes her eyes shut and holds her breath as she walks through the column separating platforms nine and ten, expecting to come into contact with something hideously, horribly solid at any moment. she startles when the sound of small explosions, laughter, and various animal noises reach her ears, and she tentatively opens her eyes.

the sight takes her breath away.

she'll be lying if she says she isn't the least bit nervous. she'll be spending months away from her home to live with people her own age, who are magical just like her. there might be others who had never known their abilities until someone had come knocking on the front door of their house, laden with tales of a school in a castle, of spells that create, destroy, that change, of potions sweet and and harmful both. of hogwarts, school of magic.

and yet, there may be others who are used to these things, who have lived their whole lives with someone using a spell to summon a simple book, or to cook a meal, or to heal a bruise. children who have known about the magical all their lives.

it terrifies her.

it excites her.

a gentle nudge provokes a surprised exclamation from her, and she spins around to see her mother smiling at her, holding a cage. within the metal bars, a barn owl sleeps, head tucked under a wing. she grins at herself and takes the cage, blinking up a small distance at her dwarf-sized mother. it seems that she's going the same way, she notes with disappointment.

"i'll send as many letters as i can," she promises, "by owl, maybe."

the short woman smile widens. "i'm sure you will. have fun, okay, sweetheart? i'll see you at the holidays."

"i will."

eleven years old, dragging a bag with books about magic and potions supplies and a cage tucked under her arm, she boards the train. she looks back to see her mother wave at her, and she briefly (with a little difficulty) raises her arm to wave back.
