As the four apprentices and four kittens sat in their rocky camp, munching on a lucky catch of Squid's while chatting and joking, Norbert suddenly stood up. They'd all forgiven him for being a bit of a jerk regarding the ranks and leaders within their group, but Paladin and Squid looked quite wary as he rose unexpectedly.

"What's up?" questioned Paladin, also standing. The dark blue tom was now taller than Norbert, being an apprentice.

Squid stuffed the last of the rabbit into his mouth and hitched himself upright, tail swishing.

Sophie, who was the strongest of them all, prowled forward in case muscle was needed.

And then they saw what Norbert was looking at; a nearby hedge was shaking, apparently as someone or something within moved. A small calico kitten burst from the hedges, covered in leaves and looking extremely unamused.

Belle blinked in surprise at the eight wary-looking youngsters in front of her.

"Who're you?" barked a hostile-faced pink-and-blue tom, stepping forward and glowering at Belle.

How rude. Belle thought with a frown.

"Belle." the little calico meowed grudgingly.

"Nice name." a cheery-looking yellow kitten, who was standing behind the trio of apprentices, purred.

Belle blinked. She hadn't been expecting a compliment. "Thanks."

"My name is Squid." the apprentice blue tabby meowed, sinking into a sitting position and offering an easy smile. "Nice to meet you, Belle."

Belle smiled uncertainly at the kind-looking older tom, but before she could reply the odd-looking green kit, one of the big ones the calico had seen chilling in the hedges, spoke. "The name's Sophie."

"It's nice to meet you bot -" she was cut off by the rather mistrustful-looking blue-and-pink kit, who muttered,
"My name is Norbert."

As someone unexpectedly bumped into Squid, he glanced down. "Oh! Hi! Who're you?"

Norbert let out a hostile growl.

Belle uncertainly made her way forward and sat down next to Aleksy, much to the annoyance of Norbert.

"Chillax." Paladin addressed Norbert. "She looks perfectly friendly. You ain't gonna hurt us, right, Belle?" the dark blue apprentice cast her a look as he spoke, eyebrows quirked.

Squid smiled brightly at Frost. "Nice to meet you, Frost. How you farin'?"

Belle shook her head quickly. Even though she was the same age as Norbert, he looked as though he could beat her up. "No! I'm just a little lost, that's all."

Aleksy gently bumped her shoulder. "Don't worry about it, Belle. We were all lost, but then we joined together. Friends."

"Friends? Ha! What a concept." Belle sounded amused, though slightly bitter, too.

Sensing her sourness, the pink-and-green splotched tom frowned slightly. "Aww, no - what's wrong?"

Belle frowned a little. "It's just...well, I've never really had a friend, you see. Haven't been around people my age long enough to be friends."

Aleksy, who couldn't think of a more horrible way to live, let out a cry of sympathy. "Oh, that's so terrible, I'm sorry!"

Squid shrugged, casting the bones of the rabbit(which Cecil was absently sucking on) a quick glance. "Just hanging out."

Belle smiled and glanced down at her paws. "Heh. Thanks, but I'm used to it."

Aleksy clicked his tongue. "That still doesn't make it acceptable. Okay, I'm going to be your first friend!" he beamed.
