I don't think Yellowfang asked Brokenstar to be her apprentice (I might be wrong, I have really bad memories), but because he spent a lot of time with her, the others teased him.
Also, I think he did have a choice. In Yellowfang's Secret, the manga, Sagewhisker was talking about how he CHOSE the destiny of bloodshed and misery, and how Yellowfang could do nothing to stop it.
