Mapleleaf groomed her three newborn kits. She was angry and sad. She was angry at her mate for leaving her. She was sad because she had kits and wouldn't be allowed to be medicine cat anymore.
"I'm sorry, Mapleleaf." Thornstar's mew echoed in her thoughts. "I can't be mates with a medicine cat!" Brackenclaw, her former mate's, angry voice echoed around with Thornstar's. "How can my life get worse!" She mewed out loud startling her kits.Thornstar couldn't believe his medicine cat had so easily failed him. She didn't even have an apprentice! How could his clan ever survive without a medicine cat?
"Brackenclaw, why?" Mapleleaf's plead surrounded his thoughts. He knew he had to leave her. He didn't want it to sound so harsh though. He had been mean and cruel and harsh. He knew it. He couldn't be mates with her. They disobeyed the warrior code. He ruined her life. He ruined his. How could he fix this?
